Depth Chart vs Northwestern - Spiny_Norman - 08-26-2019

https://gostanford.com/documents/2019/8/26//190831_Stanford_Depth_Chart.pdf?id=16400

Observation #1 - Stanford lists a fullback. I don't expect to see many plays with a FB, certainly not as many as in years past.

Observation #2 - only 7 offensive linemen are listed on the 2 deep and one of them (Hamilton) has missed time in pre-season because of injury. The backup at both tackle positions is true frosh Walter Rouse.

Observation #3 - tough to tell who the nickelback might be, but it could be true frosh Kyu Blu Kelly who is listed as backup to Adebo.

Observation #4 - punter is still up for grabs between Sanborn and Riccitelli

Surprised to see Pryts listed as a starter at ILB with Robinson. Miezan and Magnum-Farrar back-ups...for now. We know that all four will likely play a great deal.

Hattis gets the start over Powell. Not surprised given that Shaw had seemingly gone out of his way to mention Hattis in remarks to the press.

Here's a story from his hometown; can't remember if it's been posted here or not: https://www.krqe.com/sports/local-sports/henry-hattis-is-ready-for-his-senior-season-at-stanford/

Michael Wilson listed as punt returner, with Wedington also on the depth chart. Did Wilson return any punts last year?

Also, Stanford starters at every offensive line position weigh less than their counterparts at UW and Oregon.

RE: Depth Chart vs Northwestern - Langdude - 08-26-2019

Only real surprise for me was Hattis over Powell at guard, simply given that Hattis has never played at guard and Powell started there last year more than once.

Shaw tends to value and reward seniority, so I am less surprised that Pryts gets the nod. In fact, I had him listed as the starter most of the off-season. I don't think he will remain the starter. But I am glad that Pryts gets some small reward for switching positions.

I am also not surprised that Williamson gets the start over Stuart Head. They didn't switch Williamson to play less than he did last year, which was a lot (including a start).

-m.

Wilson returned 8 punts last season - had a 30 yarder vs UC Davis and 21 yarder vs Cal.

Yes, but Head off the 2-deep completely??? Walk-on JJ Parson is next man up behind Williamson.
Yeah, that is weird.

-m.

RE: Depth Chart vs Northwestern - donkey687 - 08-26-2019

A couple names missing, Speights and Andres Fox both played decent snaps and don't appear in two deep. Scarlett was a productive KOR last year but is not listed (i assume due to protecting him as RB1).

The thing that stands out is our lack of depth in secondary and OL. We can't afford many injuries there.

Interesting that Logan and Kelly beat out Butler for 2nd string CB and Head doesn't appear at all at S. I have no idea who our Nickel will be.

RE: Depth Chart vs Northwestern - OutsiderFan - 08-26-2019

I do think a few guys will play who aren't on the depth chart.

My assumption is Bragg will be on the depth chart when he is healthy.

My guess is Jones and/or Peat will get in at RB.

Andres Fox doesn't appear on the initial depth chart, and everyone believes he will play.

Also, Donald Stewart will get snaps.

I'm really pleased to see Ryan Johnson on the 2-deep.

RE: Depth Chart vs Northwestern - terry - 08-26-2019

If Little or Sarell were to go out of the line-up, my guess is that Hamilton would slide out from guard to tackle, with Powell coming off the bench to replace Hamilton at guard. So Powell effectively may be backing up all five OL positions.

RE: Depth Chart vs Northwestern - winflop - 08-27-2019

Seven OL is setting off brobdingnagian alarm bells for me.

Williamson at SS weighing only 201 is a serious problem too. Who's gonna stop a 220lb+ RB if he gets past the LBs? Nobody, that's who.

Pryts at ILB at 225 is also concerning. Maybe he teams better with Robinson and this way they can rotate as pairs with Miezan & Magnum-Farrar

No Speights on the 2-deep is concerning. Surprised he wasn't listed as an OR with Maddox. I wonder if there's something to read into that?

This team can beat NU but this 2-deep isn't very deep and after 12 games I worry what it's going to look like especially at OL.

Not to interrupt the hand-wringing, but most teams only have 7 OL they really feel good about playing. When Bragg is available, that will be 8 who can probably play at a decent level if need be for Stanford. That's plenty in a routine year for most teams.

If Pryts is starting it probably means he's pretty good in pass coverage and has good speed. Being a converted Safety, makes sense.

Safeties are more like CBs these days given the rules changes that place a heavier emphasis on pass coverage than hitting. Williamson had played OK as a Frosh CB, but being a physical player is ideally suited to Safety.

I'm far more concerned with the fact Andres Fox isn't on the depth chart - though I believe he will play - than anyone actually on the depth chart. Pass rush is so important, the coaches have raved about Fox, and moved him to OLB ostensibly to play, but he's not on the depth chart?

RE: Depth Chart vs Northwestern - Phogge - 08-27-2019

Slide is being polite. The safety tackling was atrocious. So was the often slow reaction to the ball. And Reid wasn’t perfect in the championship loss to SC. He was smoked on a couple of deep balls.

Gabe Reid is the backup at both OLB positions. Could Andres Fox be banged up?

It will be interesting to see how aggressive the defense will be with the questions at safety and how quickly freshmen DB’s get play time.

Tuesday in-season is press conference day. This is the only news that I have seen reported from the presser.
