Last night was an event available to WVB season ticket holders consisting of a practice (which I missed), a coach's talk, and a BBQ. This is the first time I've been to such an event, and it was well worth the $25.

At the BBQ, each table had one of the WVB members. They would rotate about every 5 minutes, so you got to sit with about 5 of the players.

Madeline was one of the players that visited our table. In response to a question about the new players during the coach's talk, Coach Hambly said a bit about each of the freshman, and then was reminded that Madeline was also new, so he talked about how she came to be on the team. Apparently completely unbeknownst to the Stanford coaches, she applied to and got into Stanford's Statistics Masters program. In March, she called the coach and asked if she might be able to join the team. Even with a team as loaded as Stanford, when you get a former (2nd team) All-American walk-on, you have to be pleased.

So, when Madeline introduced herself to our table, I commented how my friend & I had been talking about her after the coach's comments. Personally, I think it is really laudable that she chose what she wanted to do with her career (see the article) and then, secondarily, looked to see if she could continue with her volleyball.

I wish I'd thought to ask if she had gotten a commitment to be on the roster before she had to make her commitment to Stanford's grad school. I also wish I'd thought to ask about whether she foresaw any challenges to her grad work because most of the other grad students would probably be working with their professors this year on specialized projects, while she'd spend the time until December with WVB instead. That could cost her in getting a professor that was quite familiar with her academic abilities.

Our table was visited by Jenna Gray, Madeline Gates, McKenna Vicini, Mackenzie Fidelak, and Natalie Berty. All were pleasant young ladies that beautifully handled this table of strangers asking a variety of questions.

Jenna is looking forward to playing VB overseas and traveling. She wants to continue with her javelin throwing in the spring, with the possibility of making the Olympics. (Jenna, I looked - you're ranked #61 currently but your best throw this year is better than the best throw of #36. Perhaps you need more throws at major events to be ranked higher.) In response to a question, she commented how she's had turnover of coaching staff in both volleyball and track.

I continue to be impressed by Coach Hambly. Obviously he knows his VB. Beyond that, a coach has to relate to his prospects, his players, his staff & bosses, and to the fans. I noticed that one of the players referred to him as "Kevin". He was open & comfortable in his manner to the group of season ticket holders. (I don't know if he had any talk first -- he was fielding questions when I arrived.)
