Who was the first professional, major league African American baseball player? Where did he go to college?
Bonus: Who was second? Who was third?
And no, Jackie Robinson isn't the answer to any of them.

Yes, 1800s, specifically 1879. William E. White, who played baseball for Brown, was the son of a plantation owner and a former slave named Hannah. He was 18 years old when he played one game for the Providence Grays when regular 1B Jim Start (ironically nicknamed "Old Reliable") was injured and couldn't play.

The Grays, incidentally, went on to win the National League that year. Hall of Famers John Ward (pitcher for the Grays but later played mainly SS and 2B), "Orator" Jim O'Rourke (OF) and were managed by Hall of Famer George Wright (also played SS and 2B on this team).

White had one hit and scored one run in four trips. His father named him and his two siblings in his will with the request that they be educated in the North, hence Brown. And he played on Brown's varsity:

O'Rourke made his own interracial impact on the game. Apart from playing on the team with White, in 1895 he was a club executive for the Bridgeport team in the Connecticut League where hired the first African American player in the minors. O'Rourke also appeared for the New York Giants as a 54 year old in 1906, and at the age of 60 caught a full complete game. They called him "Orator Jim" because he graduated from Yale with a law degree.

Five years later, Moses Fleetwood Walker and his brother Welday walker played for the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association, a major league at the time.
