The Ryan Helinski story -

Quote:When Ryan stuck with his commitment to play at South Carolina, even after his dream school, Stanford, offered him late, his parents were already planning to put the Claremont place on the market and join him here. While staying in California would have kept them close to family and friends, and allowed Mark to remain a part the technology company he founded, the Hilinskis were almost relieved to get to uproot.
They did not want to have to revisit all the Pac-12 stadiums where they watched Tyler play, if they could avoid it. Ryan agreed that wasn’t necessary.
Not clear how much of it is the fact that we offered him late and how much of it was the chance of a fresh start is unknown, but my suspicion is that human nature played a big part here. Once he made a commitment to South Carolina, the fact that it gave him a new start could be used as post facto justification. I'm not sure that had we offered before he committed that he would have turned down his "dream school" just to get a fresh start.

Doesn’t matter now. Think he made the correct call. Hope he becomes a star.

Great article. You can feel the pain. I’m with Phogge- he made the right choice. It would have been excruciating to play in Pac-12 stadiums.

Helinski will start next week

Partly because of an injury to South Carolina's senior starter; partly because the starter didn't exactly light it up as South Carolina lost to UNC.
