Semi-OT: Oregon Ducks clock management - cctop - 09-01-2019

Mario Cristobal is getting a lot of heat for his clock management last night that allowed Auburn to go ahead with 9 seconds left in the game:

The story has lots of references to how he also blew it last year against us. I didn't realized that game was such a big deal for them.

It set the tone for the rest of their season. They were supposed to be on top of the world, coming in red-hot and 3-0, dominated us for the whole first half, and choked it away. They ended up limping to 4th in the Pac-12 North and winning one of the worst bowl games I've ever seen 7-6 against a Michigan State team that looked horrible.

At least this article, for the 2018 Stanford game, gets the basic facts straight: had Oregon taken a knee at the critical juncture they would still have had to punt to Stanford (many comments about the game implied they could have kneeled out the clock).

While that might have been the best strategy, under the circumstances essentially all football coaches would have tried for one more first down so that they could have then kneeled out the clock. Mistakes happen on punts too (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqv48MwEbaQ )

But more broadly, this article reminds me that I would rather complain about Shaw "turtling" after a win than complain about over-aggressiveness after a loss.
