Play DWP and Miezan more -
OutsiderFan - 09-02-2019
I re-watched the defensive side of the NU game today trying to see Booker play. He didn’t play much, but when he did, they had him at NT on passing downs several times. I get the theory, but the video evidence suggests DWP is a better option.
In fact, if I were Stanford, I would start DWP, Williams, and Swan, and rotate in Booker and Schaffer. Of course, they play a lot of nickel with just two DL. Still, DWP was consistently beating his man and avoiding blocks. He has amazing quickness for such a big guy. Almost looks like a Linebacker.
The most impressive front seven play I saw was when Miezan read a pulling Guard, blasted right into him, knocked him over, and then made the tackle on the RB for no gain. I’d go with Robinson and Miezan as the starting ILBs. JMF and Pryts can rotate in to spell them.
One other note. Andres Fox was in on a few plays. I’m a bit concerned Stanford’s outside pass rushers are not being taught good technique. They are kind of easily blocked and losing way too many hand battles. Not a lot of variety to their approaches either, and almost no line stunts.
Despite this concern, after one game, my belief the Defense would be much improved seems warranted.

Booker left the game with an injury during the second quarter.

I can only imagine he pulled a muscle because I watched every play he was in and he didn’t appear bothered by anything on the field in camera view.

Awesome! That's the Ricky I have seen at practice and expect on game day. I think he's a (not too distant) future star.

It's probably not a coincidence that Stanford's 3 best front seven players IMO (Swann, DWP, and Miezan) all beat their man and otherwise won their matchups on that play.

OF, were you not looking at Mike Williams?

DWP was wearing black cleats and Williams white. Williams also played pretty well, but to my eye Swann and DWP were the two best DL Stanford had in that game in terms of beating their blockers. It defies logic to think DWP listed at 321 pounds moves better as a pass rusher than Williams at 290, but he does.

Disagree, respectfully. Williams five tackles, Perry one tackle, a sack. Right now Williams does a better job taking on and clogging blockers. Has come a long way from heart issues. Agree Perry has promise but he has a way to go on technique. And while Miezan looks like an athlete he needs experience. Robinson had to reposition him a couple of times. Before we anoint the next Jeff Simeon let’s see him against the Trojan dreadnoughts and the Oregon All Americans.

Completely agree with your main take Outsider regarding DWP and Miezan. Disagree a bit regarding Robinson. Robinson has delivered some great performances previously, but I don't think Saturday was necessarily his best game. He seemed a step slow on a couple of instances (Adebo's INT play, play where he got called for PI in the red zone etc.)
Agree with your take on Fox. In particular, Stanford seemed particularly at risk of getting beaten with a screen pass when Fox was on the field, perhaps suggesting he is more limited at this stage in his career to pass rushing.

We are fortunate to have TWO NTs, but I think Mike Williams is the better of the two. He takes up two blockers more often than DWP, which frees up the ILBs more and is one of the NTs primary jobs on running plays.

When has Robinson delivered great performances in the past? He has had 36 tackles total, 2.5 TFLs, 1 sack, and 1 PBU in 2016/2017 combined. I don’t mean to rag on him, because he was behind on the depth chart, which is why he moved inside, but other than a blocked punt against Oregon two years ago, I don’t recall many big plays.

Robinson had 6 tackles and a blocked punt against Oregon in 2017, which is pretty good. But yeah, he needs to prove himself.

He picked off Wimbush to start the ND collapse in 2017, so I have no idea why you didn't see an int as part of his stats.
Agreed though. He's in prove-it mode to me.

Were it up to me, I'd start Miezan and JMF, but I understand coaches are reticent to play inexperienced players and likely won't feel comfortable starting two RS Frosh at ILB. So I say Miezan and Robinson in deference to this reality.

It was one game. I'm not going to overreact about Robinson's lackluster performance or Miezan & Pryts who both played well above (low) expectations. I'm going to trust the coaches who watch all of them in practice, and the reality is that the two tandems will both play a good number of snaps.

Yeah, his games against SC, Notre Dame and Oregon in 2017 were the ones I was referring to BC. He was hurt most of last year, so he didn't have much of a chance to prove/show anything.

Well that is fun to watch. Hope he has instincts for the position, that is entertaining as hell. Someone has to bring the attitude to that side of the ball. Great video clip, thanks.

Thanks for the reminder; I remembered the block but not the INT. Maybe it was a bit of semantics, but I would say he delivered a handful of memorable plays, not performances in the past. And again, that's not to deride him because he didn't have many opportunities. But I think Robinson's always been high on potential based on recruiting ranking, and less high on actual on field accomplishments, but he's only in his third year of eligibility.
FWIW, our ILB:
| ILB | Solo | Assisted | Total | TFL | Sacks | INTs | PBU | Fumbles forced |
| Robinson | 3 | 2 | 5 | 0.5 | 0.5 | 0 | 1 | 2 |
| Pryts | 2 | 2 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Miezan | 1 | 2 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| JMF | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Statistically, Robinson had far and away the best game.

As far as I know Booker did not finish the game. And he is listed as questionable for USC.
