Walker Little - ChicagoCard - 09-03-2019

Apparently he has a dislocated knee. According to Emily van Buskirk who I think qualifies as a legit source.

RE: Walker Little - BostonCard - 09-03-2019

Ugh, but I suppose it could have been worse; I was worried that he would be out for the season with a ligament tear. Unfortunately, this is likely his last season, and with the injury, we are unlikely to ever see him at full potential. Wish him a quick recovery.

MUCH better news than I was expecting

Agreed. I was worried that was his last game in a Stanford uniform.

RE: Walker Little - needle - 09-03-2019

Not entirely sure this is good news. Google tells me nerve damage can result from this type of injury, which seems to be relatively rare.

RE: Walker Little - oldalum - 09-03-2019

Dr. Google can be misleading. I suspect this is just a kneecap (patellar) dislocation, which generally does not involve a nerve injury and might have a one-month recovery time--but he would have increased risk of recurrence and would probably need to wear a brace to prevent it. It is not a rare injury. A dislocation of the knee joint itself is a rare, major injury that requires surgery and would probably be season-ending.

RE: Walker Little - OutsiderFan - 09-03-2019

I had a feeling it wasn't an ACL tear, but knee dislocation isn't that much better in terms of being able to return this season. I'm going to guess Little is out until November at least.

The complicating matter is Little's NFL aspirations. He is/was projected as a first round pick, but was that based on him playing a full season healthy and dominating? Is it in his best interest to forego playing at Stanford anymore and prepare for draft like Joey Bosa last year? Return this season to show what he can do over final few games to solidify a draft position? Does he need to play a full season injury free next year to cement his first round status? Does he want to graduate with his class?

So many questions and variables to consider right now.

This could be the NFL future for Walker Little - https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2019-09-01/andrew-luck-retirement-rich-ohrnberger-injuries-reaction

I hope that he stays at Stanford to finish his degree.

The linemen already wear knee braces. I’m still wondering if they slide Hamilton over and insert Powell or if they go to Rouse full time. If Rouse then we probably have a helluva tackle going forward and Hinton is on the horizon.

Unfortunately, Shaw just announced that Powell is highly doubtful. So there's no option.

The press conference is streaming right now:

Little has a "good chance" of being ready by "mid-season". KJ is "questionable" for Saturday and we'll know later this week - I personally think this is gamesmanship and they already know it's Davis Mills this week. (Just like JJAW at Utah or Bryce at OSU in previous seasons...)

I'm at work and can't watch anymore!

Shaw just said at the weekly presser that Powell is doubtful. Those true frosh will have a chance to contribute right away. Or maybe Fisk will move over from TE to OL.

Costello - questionable
Booker - questionable
Powell - doubtful
Little - out

Also neither Speights nor Head will be back for USC.

Thanks guys.

Here's a brief quote from Jason Kelce, Eagles Pro Bowl Center, in an article from The Athletic about Zach Ertz on Luck's retirement. Other Eagles players' comments were reported int the piece:

“There’s always been 100 percent injury rate,” Kelce said. “You try to get used to it. And then, as you play longer, you have more and more things that just add up.”

A 100% injury rate is pretty brutal, but it is absolutely true. Every player will get injured if they play long enough. It happens sooner for some than others, but everyone will be injured. The question is what can guys play with and what can they not. Josh Garnett sealed his NFL fate by refusing to play with a dislocated finger. Some may say that's smart and they may be right, but the reality is there is no room in the NFL for someone who won't play through a dislocated finger when other guys are playing through that and more.

RE: Walker Little - Hank 91 - 09-03-2019

My daughter dislocated her knee cap in high school. Granted, she was a basketball player and didn't have to put the torque on her knee in the same way a 300-pound offensive lineman would, but she was able to work through it with physical therapy. One thing I learned then, though, is that like most injuries, there's a wide range of expectations for recovery time. Sometimes the knee cap will slide out of place and then immediately back in. This is the best case scenario. For my daughter, the knee cap remained out of place until we got to the hospital, which led to more damage and a longer recovery. So for Little, we'll see him when we see him.

Here we go again with the O-line injuries

RE: Walker Little - ChicagoCard - 09-03-2019

So will the fullback's role be adjusted to help out Walter Rouse a little in protecting the QB, say on certain plays?

RE: Walker Little - fullmetal - 09-04-2019

Run read option from right to left and make Rouse's man decide. Mills needs to be more decisive and sure-handed on the handoffs. I'm not doubling down on Mills, but I'm not backing off on him either. The U$C game will probably show us whether Mills has the right stuff (johnnyO is all-in on Mills, I know).

I suspect Mills will be much more finely tuned after a full week of practice with the first string.

RE: Walker Little - Phogge - 09-04-2019

Oh, as long as DOC is all in on Mills we can sleep better.
