Niners - cardcrimson - 09-15-2019

Turned the game on just in time to see Garoppolo false start, then throw a terrible pick. Fortunately, those seem to be the only mistakes he's made thus far.

Fun to watch a pro style offense with some creativity. Defense looks pretty stout thus far, as well. Up 24-10 at the half.

Back to back road wins is a remarkable start for the 49ers, a 4-12 team last season.

Yes, fun to watch a dominant offensive performance, complete with oodles of talk about Bill Walsh.  Almost reminded me of what I liked about football.

Back to back road wins in the Eastern time zone.  They also have road games against the Redskins and the Ravens.  They will travel the fifth-most among NFL teams with 25,512 miles, including four trips of over 2,000 miles. That's the benchmark, by the way, that teams appear to break down.  Less than 2,000 miles doesn't seem to affect teams more than any other road game.  More than 2,000 miles is a very long flight for very large people.

Actual stats:  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2019-nfl-schedules-by-distance-raiders-hit-the-hardest-by-travel-miles-jets-have-it-easiest/

More than half the teams (16 of 30) don't have a single road trip of over 2,000 miles, and nine of the remaining 14 teams have just one 2,000+ mile trip.  The Chargers, Buccaneers, Steelers and Ravens have two such trips.  And the NFL West gets screwed.  The Seahawks have 5, the Niners have 4, the Rams have 3.

Mercury writer Dieter Kurtenbach has been merciless with Lynch and Shanahan over the past few weeks, predicting doom and gloom.  I think he might be turning the corner.  In the wake of Joe Staley breaking his leg today, he suggests getting All Pro Left Tackle Trent Williams from the Redskins.  Williams has held out, has had $1 million in fines.

Kurtenbach can't compliment without it being backhanded.  Niners have scored 30+ points in the first two wins for the first time since 1998, and Kurtenbach says "they're showing their ceiling."  They just won, 41-17.  Garoppolo's rating was 131.2.  They had four sacks and intercepted another pass (four INTs this year after two all of last year).  Breida was 12 carries for 121 yards.  Team rushed 42 times for 259 yards, a 6.2 average.  The Niners had 572 yards on offense.

Kurtenbach is a hack.

One other point of interest...the Niners have the most points in the NFC with 72.  They have the third most behind the Ravens (80) and the Patriots (76) in the NFL.

Hey Bobbbbbb remember Orland Kurtenbach?

leftcoast - Leftcoast - 09-15-2019

This trip wasn’t >2000 miles - at least not the way Lynch and Shanahan played it.  After beating the Buccaneers, the team spent the week staying at a Holiday Inn near Youngstown Ohio and practicing on a converted soccer field at nearby Youngstown State.

Less travel, no jet lag and early season team bonding in a no frills environment. Smart move.

Thanks for the tidbit.  I see that it was no coincidence.  Youngstown, the home of the Debartolos.  I looked it up - sure enough, the Holiday Inn is owned by the Edward J. Debartolo Corporation.  The team saved a ton of money.

RE: Niners - Phogge - 09-16-2019

The team is well connected.

What do the Ravens and the Patriots have in common? The both played the Dolphins.

RE: Niners - OutsiderFan - 09-16-2019

The real question is how to address Joe Staley's injury and the wholesale lack of capable bodies at the OT position in general?

I'm not too keen on trading a first round pick for Washington holdout Trent Williams. This is when a team's Pro Personnel department earns its keep. What other players on other teams might be available in trades that are either starters nearing free agency that likely won't be re-signed, or are talented backups on teams that might not look to be going very far and would rather have draft capital instead of good OT depth?

Trent Williams is at an impasse with the Redskins.  He's 31.  He's made a ton of money already.  He's not coming back to them, given his feelings about their medical staff and how they've treated him.  I wonder if he can be had for a 3rd or 4th round pick, or maybe a player that Shanahan could spare that has a high-ish cap number.

Niners have $21 million in open cap space.  Williams would want a new deal with the 49ers, since that's what he wants with the Redskins.  I don't think the 49ers want to part with a draft pick, given that they'll miss seven games of Staley.  Skule filled in.

They have Shon Coleman.  Started all 16 games at RT for Cleveland.  Right ankle injury from a month ago.

They have Ross Reynolds on the taxi squad.  He was a guard in college, hasn't played LT since high school.  Ryan Pope is also on the taxi squad, he played eight games at RT and three games at LT at San Diego State.  Big body.

RE: Niners - Phogge - 09-16-2019

Shanahan could call Shaw for advice about losing his LT.

RE: Niners - French Rage - 09-16-2019

It seems using up 2 of their 4 or 5 wins this early isn't wise.  Gotta save a few for November or December to keep the fans from getting too restless.

RE: Niners - OutsiderFan - 09-16-2019

The Niners are once again the best football team in the Bay Area.

Losing Staley hurts, but they are a very good team. The DL is the best they have had since I would say the 1980s. Maybe not in top end talent, but certainly depth. The Linebackers, particularly Kwon Alexander and Fred Warner, are really good.  Arkhello Witherspoon and Richard Sherman make a good CB tandem.

Shanahan is a brilliant offensive mind, creating mismatches all over the field. You could see how good he was when the Niners had a terrible roster.  They are gonna win at least 10 games this season. They don't have a #1 WR right now, but they have some great athletes with speed at RB, WR, and TE. Garoppolo is a good QB who is 8-2 as a starter with the Niners. What sucks is the NFC West is the best division in the NFL now.
