Costello out, Mills starting - gailtate - 09-27-2019

Rumor on the BootBoard. Sticks out like a sore thumb.

RE: Costello out, Mills starting - Hank 91 - 09-27-2019

It's not a rumor. It was announced this morning. Mills gets the start, Costello is out.

Serves me right for paying so little attention. What a sad moment for what was once a gleaming, beautiful program.

It is sad for Costello, to be sure, but I am not sure I follow the rest of your comment.  I am relieved it will be a healthy Mills vs. a less than healthy Costello.

Glad they are keeping him out he needs to heal. Should have happened at halftime last weekend.

RE: Costello out, Mills starting - OutsiderFan - 09-28-2019

OK, this really pisses me off if what I fear has happened, did.

I spent $50 to see an obviously injured QB play last week, who was also likely injured the week before, and now, on a Friday before the next game, he is ruled out?  Why was Costello playing when injured in the first place? I would be shocked if we was healthy last week, because he has looked terrible the last two weeks. If Mills gives the team the best chance to win today, it sure as hell seems like he did last week as well. Stanford has historically been exceptionally cautious with injuries, so I'm a little confused here.

I've said it before - and Yvonne ripped me for it - but Shaw is to me continuing his metamorphosis into Jeff Tedford.

1. Not continuing to innovate on offense, refusing to give OC duties to someone else, but having one in name only
2. OL recruiting slippage
3. Blowout losses
4. Defensiveness and paranoia
5. Team losing physicality edge it once had
6. Questionable game management

The only one missing up until now: Playing injured QB as safety blanket in favor of healthier less experienced one. If this is actually what has happened with Costello/Mills, it is analogous to Nate Longshore and Kevin Riley 12 seasons ago, the one that convinced me Jeff Tedford was in a death spiral and needed to be ousted.

It sure would be great to see some sign Shaw is going to pull out of the flat spin (to use an aviation analogy) the program appears to be in right now. This latest development does not assuage my concerns that Shaw is about to auger in.

OF, are you sure you are not just upset because the weenies got beat by ASU last night?

Obviously I have a different read on Shaw, but I will agree with you that playing Costello last week seemed inexplicable.  Whether it was a bad thumb, the lingering effect of concussion, or just poor performance due to having missed so much practice time--I though during the game last week that Mills would have given us a better chance.

But...what if Shaw knew that Mills had something wrong with him last week?  We can't know the information on which Shaw had to make his decision.  I do think that Shaw has in the past been pretty reluctant to bench his first string quarterback.  Fans were calling for Hogan, for Chryst, and for Costello weeks before Shaw made the changes.  From the standpoint of a head coach, at least some consideration needs to be made for building the self-confidence of your quarterback, and jerking them in and out of games could ruin that and make things worse, so I understand the reluctance.

But I was surprised not to see Mills come out to start the second half last week.

In honor of the 150th anniversary of college football and in the immortal words of Horace Greeley editor of the NY Trib, circa 1865: "Go West, young man. . . ."

RE: Costello out, Mills starting - OutsiderFan - 09-28-2019

I'm not letting sports disappointments bother me to the degree I have in the past. Stanford's been to three Rose Bowls the last decade. The Giants and Warriors have won 3 titles. The Niners have 5 Lombardi Trophies and have been in 12 NFC Championship Games since I was conceived. The Sharks have even been to a Stanley Cup Final.

Following this stuff is much more of a hobby than some sort of bloodlust like it is for so many fans. I sometimes get emotionally exercised during games, but for the most part, I enjoy the analysis, strategy, and forecasting about the teams I follow, more than the games themselves.

Trust me, I don't take this stuff as seriously as my posts might imply. But I am perturbed by the fact I paid money to see a clearly injured QB play for Stanford last week.

Your post matches what I saw.

Maybe Mills wasn't prepared for the game and Shaw didn't want to throw him to the wolves knowing it would be futile.  I imagine its hard enough to get one set of personnel fully ready for a gameplan that might beat a higher regarded team.  At some point, getting the 2nd stringer up to speed has to come at the expense of having the starters as polished as they could be, right?

Then again, we faced a couple of second and third stringers in our middle two games, right. They seemed pretty polished to me.

Which brings you full circle to the problems with the philosophy of the Stanford offense. Let's not also lose sight of the fact ASU has a True Frosh that is killing it now as well.  It is just plainly clear as the day is long that Stanford - for multiple reasons - must simplify what it does on offense so it doesn't take two years for players to get on the field and play proficiently. ASU also started a 17 YO True Frosh LT last night for good measure.

Those calls were based on performance over more than one game. This is due to an injury. There's no doubt that the coaches knew he injured his thumb, and it was clear that Costello couldn't push the ball downfield. That he's out this week also shows the error in that judgment.

That in and of itself is stunning. It seems like most parents redshirt their kindergartners these days. . . .

I think it's great that Mills will get an opportunity to start today's game . Go Cardinal !

RE: Costello out, Mills starting - cardcrimson - 09-28-2019

This situation begs a question--why don't our backup QBs get playing time? Most of our other backups get time on the field to get real game experience. Many other programs seem to have a series or two set aside for the back-up QB each game, while others will play them extensively when the games are out of reach, either way.

This isn't a new question, either, as we've done the same over the last several season.

I’m assuming the process  is a Dr checked him out. Maybe even a half time x-ray. No break. He says he’s fine. Off they go.  You can say that they should have seen hecwas less than effective and pulled him. But that’s his QB. The guy they planned to ride.  So easy to make the call from the couch.

Let’s go to the NFL. Cam Newton. Played two games with bad foot. Was AWFUL.  Said he was good to go. Probably cost Panthers at least 1 game. He was actually hurt worse then he let on. I think that is somewhat common.  These guys are competitors They think they are letting team down if they don’t play.

Yes we can easily say Shaw should have pulled Costello.  When it’s the coaches decision, not quite as easy.

or the injury got worse after the game, who here has injured something that seemed minor at the time only to realize the next morning that maybe it was worse than you thought, my worst example of this was a broken arm, it hurt a bit when injured, when I woke up the next morning it was pretty clear something was really not right

but I'm in the camp that he was not throwing well after he hurt his hand and I think we should have gone to Mills

RE: Costello out, Mills starting - martyup - 09-28-2019

We were only down 11.  There was hope for a comeback win.  Hindsight is 20/20.  If KJ would have brought us back for the win, he would have been called courageous for fighting through his pain.  Didn't happen so some people want to attack Shaw's decision to keep him in.
