Looking at the rest of the season....... - JohnR34231 - 09-29-2019

......through "Cardinal colored glasses", perhaps.
Washington and ND will be tough, but now that the Cougs are playing fat, dumb, happy, and entitled, that one looks possibly winnable, as do the rest.

So 7-5 looks at least somewhat doable, and if we win our bowl game, it won't be the worst season in history with Shaw at the helm.

RE: Looking at the rest of the season....... - BostonCard - 09-29-2019

I take a somewhat dimmer view on the remainder of the schedule.  The rest of the teams we face will be better than OSU, and we needed a last minute field goal to beat them.  Looking at what’s coming up:
UW: as you pointed out, will be tough. They have the running game to carve us up down the middle, and the defense to make keeping up with them tough. I haven’t looked, but I expect to be about 2 TD underdogs
Bye: I think we can avoid a loss here
UCLA: I guess this depends on which UCLA team shows up. If it’s the team that sliced and diced WSU, we’re in trouble. If it’s the team that struggled against every other team on its schedule, we might be able to eek out a win at home. I figure we will be favored by about a field goal.
Arizona: it might depend on whether Arizona has Tate and/or Taylor back. With them, I’d expect them to be favored by between a field goal and a touchdown, despite playing on the road. Without them, we will probably be slightly favored.
@Colorado: another game that could go either way.  This is a team that beat Nebraska, and we are playing at Colorado. I expect them to be favored by a bit more than a field goal.
@WSU: yeah, WSU is going through a rough patch, and though we can make fun of Leach, the truth is that they are a bad matchup for us. We simply don’t have the secondary to keep up with them, and we are playing at WSU. I expect WSU to be favored by over ten points.
Cal: Cal is for real, and though they may have trouble if Garbers can’t play for a while, I don’t see our offense having much success against their defense.  They will be favored by about a touchdown; more if Garbers is back.
UDFG: uh, yeah. Despite playing at home, they’re the best team remaining on our schedule.  I could see them favored by 15-20 points.

Put it all together, and I think we can squeeze out three wins in the last 7 games.  It is hard to see where the fourth win comes, though I guess a team like WSU could self destruct down the stretch, or Cal could fall apart if Garbers is out the rest of the year.  7-5 seems like very Cardinal colored glasses way of looking at it.  And there’s downside risk too, and you could see a situation where we get 2 or fewer wins in our remaining schedule.

Your scenario is no doubt more likely than mine, but other than Washington and ND, I see the rest of the games as at least possibly winnable. The chances of winning them all, are, admittably, not great.

looks like you beat me to the punch on that one.
but yeah, with a little luck, we just might have a winning season......

Look at the bright side. If we only win three the rest of the way (pretty likely, I think), Shaw won't have one of those pesky bowl games to worry about and can spend the extra time recruiting.

Maybe he could spend that time finding a new strength and conditioning coach.

Excellent option as well. . . .

how about hiring a legitimate Power 5 offensive coordinator and give up the Denny's menu?  per earlier post, Stanford is dead last in Pac-12 in virtually every offensive category.  such sweeps are very difficult....

But Shaw didn't take responsibility for the Oregon loss and blamed his players. For the people who thought Shaw
blamed his players, as opposed to himself, for the "lack of execution" last week, this is what blaming your players looks like.

I am sure Wazzu's players are going to be real motivated to play hard after getting treated like this. Comments like this, in my mind,
are only counter-productive, and could lead to more losses (and transfers in the off-season).

And a new OC. And some new position coaches too (ILB, WR).

OTOH, getting to 6-6 gets you extra weeks of practice that I've read are very helpful to player development

I don't give a rat's what Mike Leach says. I care about what Shaw says. Reading his comments last week, it sure seemed to me, and others, that he placed a lot of the blame on the player's execution. Period.

Importantly, it's irrelevant how I interpret his comments. And it's irrelevant how you interpret them. All that matters is what the players think and how they interpreted his post game comments. That was the basis of my original post on the matter.

Disagree on Kennedy. He recruits extremely hard and well. Plus he's new. Plus we didn't even have a WR coach before him...Pritchard did double duty. PLUS keep in mind the oldest WR logging minutes is a redshirt soph.

Hard agree on Hansen. And Akina's really starting to wear me thin.

Didn’t see Stanford on this bowl projection (though I might have missed it).

It'd be fitting if we could make it to the Walk-on's Independence Bowl, after all, with so many unfilled scholarships. . . .

Maybe the WR problems are more the routes (Fanboy Hero problem) but they are getting zero separation.

Akina gets a pass due to his amazing track record. Anderson is a question mark for me because he's in charge of recruiting, but Shaw would be highly unlikely to replace both OC and DC so if one has to go it's OC

Well, last time Leach said something like this (Kal two years ago) his team won three out of their next four games.
So I would bet his players shrug it off, taking it less seriously than some of the people on the Cardboard are.

We have had ONE DB drafted in the last 4 years.

For comparison, Jimmy Lake at UW has had 6.

RE: Looking at the rest of the season....... - BostonCard - 09-30-2019

He did coach Alex Carter and Jordan Richards, but that was conveniently before the four year cut-off.

Still, it does seem like the secondary has take a bit of a step back in the last couple years.

Both Mason recruits who had one year under Akina.

Not sure about you, but I'd sure consider being #115 in the nation in passing yards allowed/game, #122 in completion percentage allowed/game, and #125 in YPA allowed/game to be more than "a bit of a step back." It's atrocious.

RE: Looking at the rest of the season....... - Phogge - 09-30-2019

The safety recruiting has been horrendous. But so has the safety tackling problem. I think that there is a lack of toughness on the back line.
