Hey, that's just Leach.
If his team has a bad game, he doesn't mince words.
One of these days I keep hoping they have a bad game against us.

Heard Leach doesn't like popsicles too...

Yes. He’s just Leach. So that’s ok. Love to see response if Shaw said something like that

I agree with Lex24.
I've noticed that there are those who criticize Shaw after losses for not sufficiently taking responsibility as a coach--when I actually think he did take responsibility. But we are very quick to fault him around here if he doesn't say it in just the right way.
There should be much more outrage for Leach. Leach doesn't take responsibility. It's his players fault for being "fat" "dumb" and "entitled."
I think his players are entitled. They are entitled to a coach who behaves like a professional, not like a 4th grade bully.
Leach goes down in my book along with Frank Kush, Woody Hayes, and Bob Knight as brilliant minds in their sports (well, maybe Kush doesn't reach that level) who seem to have gotten their sports brilliance by hijacking the part of their brains that regulate emotional intelligence.
If a Professor abused his classroom in the way that Leach regularly abuses his players, he would be fired--even if he were tenured. But I guess that it is not enough that sports gets fame and fortune, we also have different ethical standards for coaches than for the rest of a university, too.
Except we don't, at Stanford, which is a major reason I'm a Stanford fan. And a Shaw fan. Not once have I ever seen Shaw treat his players with even a hint of the condescension that Leach constantly spews. Shaw got that from Walsh, who whatever his faults (and there were a few) revolutionized football not only with Xs and Os but with the way he treated his players--both at Stanford and with the Niners. I think his professionalism as much as his football IQ was behind his nickname, "The Professor." And while Shaw doesn't emulate Walsh's offensive philosophy, I think he does emulate his professional attitude toward players.

Why? He's not our coach.

As usual, 100% in agreement with you 81, and I thought about your post from yesterday about Leach - it didn't take long for your critique to be trenchant.
And yes, it's utterly bizarre that Leach gets away with what he gets away with. Any other university employee would be disciplined if he or she talked about their students that way. The Pirate's antics are exemplary of my ambivalence about the coming professionalization of college football. On the one hand, I think it will be bad for the sport; on the other hand, the sooner college football teams are removed from colleges, the sooner sanity will return. In the mean time, we have adult leaders who act like teenagers, and teenagers being exploited by adults who purport to know something about leadership.
Moreover, with rising and legitimate concerns about the long-term effects of even mild concussions, it's probably not going to be too much longer before schools like Stanford stop funding the sport. All it will take is one student/alum lawsuit that gets before a jury and the tide is going to turn real swiftly. I suspect in 20 years we'll look back and realize the Luck and Gronk retirements were the canary in the coal mine.

Canary in the coal mine was a lot longer ago than that. How about Junior Seau's suicide? (

After Leach committed coaching malpractice in the UCLA game, he has no business attacking his players like this.

Leach talking negatively about his players reminds me of Bob Knight.

Hoping the Pirates ship is sinking. It’s only a matter of time.
One big difference with how Walsh and Shaw treats players: Walsh had no problem having a younger player pass over an established “veteran” starter. If the younger guy was better, he got the nod. Shaw sticks much longer with the “veteran”.
At the NFL level, Walsh was well known for a philosophy of getting rid of a veteran player the year before Walsh assumed the player was done. As opposed to the year after the player proved he was done. Not a criticism btw. The NFL is a business.

No Pac12 coach has a better record against Shaw. They've faced each other since 2012. Leach lost the first four times and won the last three. Should win again next month in Pullman.

Defensive Coordinator Tracy Claeys resigned this week. Things are not rosy in Pullman right now. Both programs are struggling, but while we are suffering a mild dumpster fire, Wazzu is more likely to be dealing with a full-scale goat rodeo.

Yeah, but what does that have to do with how he treats them as human beings?

I note "veteran" is in quotes, as it should be. Shaw can start a player for a maximum of four years, usually less. Walsh had players who had 10 or more years in the league. It is a lot easier to tell that a guy is slipping when you have a real calibration on what he could do. Shaw has no veterans. He has very inexperienced players and inexperienced players. I think the two situations are so different that there is no way to meaningfully compare them.

Quote:Washington State has struggled to open Pac-12 play this season, going 0-2 and allowing 91 points on defense to UCLA and Utah. The loss to the Bruins was particularly stunning as the Cougars blew a 32-point lead to the Bruins and allowed 50 second-half points in a 67-63 loss.

Doesn’t Kyle Wittingham have the best record of an opponent PAC-12 coach.
