No, seriously, can we give credit to the Stanford coaching staff for preparing their team to pull off this upset? Clearly our game plans on both O and D were excellent. We can always nit pick a few play calls, but we really shut down UW. How about that 4th down call at mid-field? Awesome game.

At this point I am not sure Stanford is going to win another game this year. In fact, it kind of looks like they are going to have to forfeit because they won't be able to put 11 guys on the field. But that was one of the most impressive performances by an undermanned team, and a bunch of untested players, that I have seen. This wasn't a classic upset where the lesser team wins because of fluke good luck, crazy risks paying off, and untimely injures to the favorite. Stanford was the team with the injuries before and during but still dominated this game: outgained UW by 200 yards, held the ball for over 5 minutes to seal it when everyone knew there was no way they would pass with a third string QB thrust into the game.
I assume the coaches had something to do with it.

Yeah, I figured. I took advantage of your comment yo note the universality of the sentiment. I didn’t even have to go over to dawgman, to know that posts like this would be up there:

Their DC Lake, one of the most well regarded Dc’s is being ripped a new one for having his DL get dominated by a Stanford OL that has lost a half dozen players to injury (major kudos to that line, by the way).
It’s the same old, same old. Fans of football teams have this expectation that they should win virtually all their games, particularly if they’ve had a modicum of success recently, and that if they don’t win it’s because the “coach sucks”. Newsflash, unless you are in lake woebegone, the average football team will have a .500 record. Which conveniently is our record now.
I wish we were rolling the way we did in the early 2010’s. It was fun to root for a dominant football team. But even then, I knew that success of that degree would be fleeting. I hope that Shaw bounces back from this season, which seems poised to be one of his worst seasons as head coach. And there are some things that he could objectively change to make that more likely. But we are a long way from Shaw being a bad coach, or even an average one. He’s the best coach Stanford has had in most of our lifetimes, and one bad season will not change that.

Coach Shaw is now 6-3 against Petersen.
And now back to the regularly scheduled rants...

I thought Petersen, Leach etc. were so much better than Shaw.
We have the best coach in the Pac-12, with the most conference,
division championships and no missed bowls during his remarkable run.

We only have one ranked team left on the schedule (at home too). Are we sure this season, after tonight, is going to be that bad?
Barring bad health news re QB and OL, I can see a nice run to close the season. 8-4 seems possible if we continue to play well.

Shaw and Peterson have coached against each other six times. I think it’s 4-2 Shaw.

If "the coach" is David Shaw, I don't think anyone here was advocating for his firing.
One win doesn't erase a lot of the things that have deteriorated Stanford's game in and game out competitiveness, but when you factor in the comically absurd number of injuries to expected starters and how many True Frosh are playing, everyone associated with Stanford Football deserves a standing ovation for winning that game against Washington.

Wow. We've looked good in exactly one game this year, and all the sycophants race back to the board to declare how great everything is.
Yes, it was a great win.

Fixed for you. No one on this board is "a person who acts obsequiously toward someone important in order to gain advantage." No one raced back - we've all been here the whole time.
After 4 rough weeks in which to be a Stanford football fan, last night was genuinely gratifying to see. I think it'd be far sadder if fans weren't getting excited about it. I don't know why we can't be allowed 12 hours of satisfaction. And I don't think there's one fan on this board who'd deny that serious concerns remain. Still, a win over a top 20 team is a win over a top 20 team.

thanks for the tongue-in-cheek post.
i thought shaw was generally much less predictable. i liked going for it on 4th down.
perhaps the most surprising, and pleasing, play call was running behind true freshman right guard hornibrook on his first play of the season. touchdown!

Trolling for a fight by playing an "I told you so" card of sorts that is the seed corn of message board banter.. But Yvonne, more than anyone on this board, can say WTF she wants here!

As someone facetiously mocking the very vocal chicken littles of this board who had decided that Stanford's all-time winningest coach and one of two Stanford coaches to guide us to two Rose Bowl wins is suddenly a terrible coach two seasons after winning the FBS Coach of the Year Award because he lost 3 games in a row for the first time in his 9 seasons?

GREAT coverage in the Seattle TImes: "Bullied by backups: Washington’s loss to Stanford was its worst of the Chris Petersen era. More than anything, though, Stanford dominated the Huskies physically. The Cardinal wasn’t just the better team — it was the tougher one, too. Stanford’s offense, meanwhile, got whatever it wanted. Mills was 21 for 30 with 293 yards. Scarlett finished with 151 yards on 33 carries, and all but put the game away with four-yard TD run in the third quarter."

Interesting perspective on a situation at Michigan State that may parallel Stanford.
https://sports.yahoo.com/5-worst-things-weve-seen-this-college-football-season-155914136.html
Quote:When the Michigan State coach dismissed a reasonable query Saturday about his failed offseason staff decisions as a “dumb-ass question,” it underscored the mentality that got him into this mess. Namely, stubbornness and ego.
There was an abundantly clear fix to the Spartans’ offensive ineptitude last offseason, and Dantonio refused to do it. He needed to fire some assistants and bring in new ideas, but instead he just shifted around some job titles and kept everyone onboard. Doing what's best for the program was sublimated in favor of Nobody Tells Me What To Do arrogance.
In three games against ranked opponents, Michigan State has averaged 5.7 points and 279 yards — and, of course, lost them all. Now, Wisconsin may be fielding a generationally great defense, and Ohio State could have its best defense in years as well. But the Spartans were utterly futile against both — their longest play of the day against the Badgers was a 20-yard run on a fake punt, for crying out loud. And then there was the seven-point home dud against Arizona State.

All credit in the world for preparing the team to finally play a complete game. But it was in ***WEEK SIX*** not week 2 or 3.
At this point, they need to play like that 2 or 3 games in a row for me to believe in any kind of upward trend.

I would also argue that at this point, Shaw would need to have 2 or 3 bad seasons in a row for me to believe in any kind of downward trend too. And to be honest, while we have likely retreated from the heights we experienced between 2010 and 2015 (Orange, Fiesta, and three Rose Bowls), what we have experienced since then (three bowl games, and one Pac-12 North championship) could hardly be considered "bad seasons".
