Once again, Scarlett - lex24 - 10-06-2019

I’ve been touting him all year. That was a great all around performance. He is very good at making the first guy miss. And man does he finish runs. Good vision. Quick to the hole. Good feet.  Moves the pile. I’d be interested to see his yards after contact.

He was also good in the screen game.  And he did a terrific job picking up blitzes.

He lacks that extra gear speed wise. But in every other respect he’s an excellent running back.  He may be playing on Sundays.

He came in having three 90+ yard games this season and no 100 yd games (92, 97, and 97). Nice to see him break through. Great tough running (and blocking).

In terms of sheer effort, that was one of the best games I've seen from a Stanford RB.  And I've seen every one of them since Ray Handley.

Tremendous desire.  And just 2 years ago the rap on him was he went down too easily on first contact.  What a tribute to his hard work.

RE: Once again, Scarlett - CornFed - 10-06-2019

I was so impressed with him last night.  He has been stronger this year now that he has been given the leadership role for the running game.  Last night's performance was jaw-dropping.  I admit that I had misjudged him.  But I'm certain that if he had been consistently running like this earlier in his career, I would not have done so.  One could get a pretty good sense last year after Bryce Love went down.  But I was too focused on what we were missing to fully appreciate how he had developed.  Very impressive.

TBH, I am happy to see a return to the Stanford identity of 4 yards and a cloud of dust. I think we lost that with Christian and Bryce, who offered different and dynamic skill sets. Now all we need to do is re-incorporate the fullback so we can run power...

Very pleased to see that we can operate that way against a good defense with our current OL situation. Hope it continues.

RE: Once again, Scarlett - Treebound - 10-06-2019

Scarlett was amazing last night, especially on the final drive when the entire stadium knew he was getting the ball from West.  He deserves the game ball and I hope he got it.   I half wanted Shaw to let Scarlett punt the ball .   That was one of the gutsiest RB performances I've seen since Toby.

What changed on the OL?  I loved the TD after Hattiss went down -right through the hole created by Hornibrook!    I hope this is a new commitment to the TWU.     Is the new S&C coach starting to make an impact?    If the OL can bring that intensity to the remaining games, we stand a solid chance to end the season on a strong note.

Right at the moment Stanford cannot run Power. That requires too much from the OL, particularly the pulling guards, and we just don't have enough experience there. We also don't appear to have a very strong blocking FB, though to be sure we haven't been putting a FB on the field often enough to be sure.

Scarlett now leads that Pac-12 in total yards rushing, by almost 100 yards.

Per another poster who responded when I asked about our lack of Power, Cardburry brought Duo running with him from the NFL, which is what we run now, and which is what we ran on the TD run by Scarlett.  The goal in duo is to get two double team blocks, and then allow one of the linemen to release and block a linebacker upfield, which is exactly what Hornibrook did.  Duo is sometimes called “power without the puller”, but as you’ve noted, we often run it without the fullback too.

HeRe’s a good description.

Scarlett finally received his opportunity to play and he is making the most of it. Great stuff !

RE: Once again, Scarlett - Griffins78 - 10-07-2019

Here are some postings on the Duo run and also play action that I found helpful:

It starts with the blocking scheme but some important points are that the RB (Scarlett) is reading the LB and can go through various holes. But also that it makes the defense particularly vulnerable to play action. And our young OL are often in double team.
