OT. When does 106-56 become a bad season -
lex24 - 10-09-2019
When you're the LA Dodgers. You wrap the division up by about Mid May. You go 59-22 at home. You lead NLDS 2-1. Then lead game five 3-0 after two. With Buehler dealing and Kershaw waiting. And you lose 7-3.
106 and out in the NLDS.
LA. Dodging the World Series since 1988. A choke for the ages. I love it.

I assume it won’t last long, but right now, if you go to the main homepage of espn.com or directly to
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/27809925/nationals-stun-clayton-kershaw-dodgers-move-nlcs, the headline says:
“Nationals stun Clayton Kershaw,
Dodgers to move on to NLCS”
Another video headline in the app says, “Kendrick’s 10th inning grand slam sends Nats to ALCS”.
Yikes, it must be amateur hour at ESPN, or budget cuts.

The comma is supposed to be read as "and" -- a common trick to save space in newspaper headlines. But it makes this one into nonsense if you read it the more natural way, as a comma splice between sentences.
I don't have an excuse for ESPN mixing up the NL and AL.

It is sad to see Kershaw's decline from being great to just being ordinary. As it is to see it in another great NL lefty. But at least our guy is one of the greatest post-season gamers of all time.
Meanwhile, as for the Dodgers, boo freaking hoo. I'm heartbroken -- NOT.

My gut was the Nats would win Game 5, but it sure wasn’t looking good when down 3-0 after Strasburg got touched up early.
But the Dodgers had Kershaw ready to come out of the pen and choke. The Nats had former Dodger Howie Kendricks in the lineup poised to crush Dodger hearts.
It was so awesome to see the whole team and stadium ready to erupt in celebration in the bottom of 9th as they all thought the series winning walkoff HR was about to sail over wall, only to be caught for a harmless out! Then next inning being followed up by Kendricks GS to win it for Nats.
Schadenfreude doesn’t get any better than that!

When it comes to playoff success, the Dodgers are the Sharks and the A's of the NL. (I realize that I'm burning two Bay Area teams here, but it's worth burning them in order to burn the Dodgers as well.)

Hey welcome Bay meadows. Young time without seeing you post.

Bay Meadows...great place to go after cutting seventh period if you had the right Jesuit who wanted to lay down a bet. Trial and error finding a myopic mutual clerk.

Neither Kershaw nor Bumgarner are ordinary. Kershaw was 16-5 with 3.05 Era and 189 strikeouts in about 175 IP. He is no longer overpowering. But hes still elite. In the regular season. He’s always been rather ordinary in the post season.
Bum is still one of the better lefty starters. Over 200 innings. Good whip. ERA a little higher than the past. Had trouble with HR’s. Why doesn’t. It’s going to be interesting to see what he brings on open market. Not brobdingnagian dollars by any means. But I suspect a fairly good take.

Bum was very good in the second half. Plus he has balls. You need a guy like that on your staff. A regular Sal Maggie. Plus Beede is a head case, Webb is about twelve years old, the Domer Receiver can implode at any time and Cueto is coming off a year and a half shutdown.
Gotta sign Bum. I don’t care what it costs. The Giants print money.

Hard to call it a bad season. Playoffs are a crapshoot. In the first 20 years of the wild card era, a wild card team made the World Series 25% of the time - which is expected when you're 2 of the 8 teams in it.
But Kershaw is a choker. He's given up twice as many HRs in clinching games as any other pitcher in MLB history.

When I read it on my phone, it wrapped to another line after the comma, making the effect much worse. Looks like they’ve now added the word “beat” after the comma to fix it.
I’m not sure about the Nats switching to the AL at this point in the season, per ESPN. It seems like that might be the harder path to the World Series...

Well, as a long-suffering fan of the team which
1. has the longest playoff drought in MLB,
2. has never been to the World Series,
3. had one glorious year in which it set the record for most victories in the regular season (but lost in ALCS)
I would take a single wildcard game at this point.

The Dodgers will be back. They have a solid core of young players -- Bellinger, Seager, Verdugo, Lux, Smith, Buehler, Gonsolin, May, Urias, etc. -- and a strong farm system.

Back to what? win 106 games then die in the playoffs? :)

The Cardinals (my team for the past 50+ years) once won a World Series with a regular season record of 83-79. Playoff baseball is definitely different from the regular season. Just make the playoffs first, then survive and advance. If the Dodgers keep making the playoffs, that one magic season will come.

Mariners. I commend you for your loyalty. It took me about 50 years with the Giants. But at least they had a long list of superstars. And the incomparable Willie Mays. Seattle has had Griffey, King Felix, The Big Unit and a lot of misery. But one day, they will get there. One problem they have is the AL West is tough. A’s are darn good. And Astros are off the charts.

The Mariners have had some good teams but they are kind of the Detroit Lions of MLB.
