Wvb vs USC - mbdude - 10-27-2019

We were up 10 to 4 1st set, give up 6 straight points . Losing 24 to 21, get it to 24 to 23, service error Grey, set to USC. 2nd match in a row shes done that. Very frustrating

RE: Wvb vs USC - qwerty49 - 10-27-2019

Ouch, our block is not very good right now.  That might be the true indication of Plummer's value.  And both Gray and Hentz are just a bit off today.

Oh man, had two set points and couldn't close out set #2. Now we're down 2-0.

RE: Wvb vs USC - JJJ - 10-27-2019

That was the first set USC took from us since 2017!?

agree on block; and we're wasting a lot of free balls.  McClure is 3/28 kills - it's tough with only her and gates front row and no backrow hitter

RE: Wvb vs USC - mbdude - 10-27-2019

great comeback win, better blocking and passing. Kipp 23/45, .400, gray7/8, Hentz 27 digs. formico 22 serve receives only 2 errors

last 3 sets 25-19, 25-14, 15-11

RE: Wvb vs USC - 76lsjumb - 10-27-2019

Not quite November 18, 2004, but maybe it will have the same effect...

RE: Wvb vs USC - BobK - 10-27-2019

Down two to Washington then come back get the win and go on to get the national championship

RE: Wvb vs USC - FarmBoy - 10-28-2019

great job by the ladies to come back but this team is going to give me a heart attack. All this makes me nervous for when Plummer, Gray and Hentz are no longer on the team. Is Hambly up to the task?

You mean the guy who coached the DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS?

Yeah, he’s probably up to it... :-)

Yes, the guy who inherited a roster of Plummer, Gray, Hentz, Fitzmorris and was on the sideline when they won their second championship. I'm not saying that's an easy thing to do, but those players were proven winners before he showed up and they continue to win. I'd say the jury remains out until he's able to do it without championship players that were recruited and trained at the collegiate level by another coach. The team appears to be struggling mightily without Plummer.

I hope he is up to it.

That's one way to put it; I can think of others. But one would anticipate some drop-off without the 2-time national player of the year. I'm not surprised that without her we are struggling mightily to play as well as we do with her. That we are still 7-1 in conference play without Plummer might be some evidence of good coaching.

I strongly suspect the 2016 team would not have won the natty without Plummer. They even sometimes "struggled mightily" with her; at one point they were 5-4 in conference play.

Of course Hambly can never be a "complete" national championship coach until he wins it with all his own players, but in the meantime we have more data points by which to judge his coaching than just the team's current performance. We would not have won the national championship last year without the stunning improvement of both Alade and Campbell, and that improvement must be attributed to his coaching. So saying he was "on the sideline" while the junior class won the natty last year seems a bit harsh to me. His recruiting seems to be excellent. He is a former National Coach of the Year, an award he managed to win without the current senior class. The many current football threads on this forum (Shaw is the worst; Shaw is the best) have helped me think it is best to judge coaching performance over periods longer than partial seasons. There can be all kinds of reasons apart from coaching why teams underperform expectations for a time.

RE: Wvb vs USC - 81alum - 10-28-2019

Maybe I just have not found the right thread, but I don't know what is wrong with Plummer and when (or if?) she is expected back.  Do we know?

Well said. For more details one can check out his Wikipedia bio.  Maybe he can’t coach his way out of a paper bag, but, if so, he’s sure fooled a lot of people over the past 10 years...  :-)

RE: Wvb vs USC - Canalejas - 10-28-2019

Stanford slips to #5 in the AVCA poll.  We're not even the top 4-loss team at the moment.

RE: Wvb vs USC - BobK - 10-28-2019

Actually our RPI is 4

RE: Wvb vs USC - qwerty49 - 10-28-2019

Stanford has a history of peaking in late November just in time for the post-season.  And hopefully a healthy Plummer will be part of that.  I can see why Kipp is getting playing time.  But to my amateur eyes, the main thing is the block needs to be better.

RE: Wvb vs USC - BobK - 10-28-2019

Having Gray run all over the floor is not good. Passing must get better which means digging must get better and that starts with the non stat of the front row defecting the opponent kill attempt

Btw Hentz is defensive player of the week

It will be interesting to see what the committee does with Stanford and Plummer.

Stanford without Plummer is probably in the 5-8 zone and would get a 2 seed.

However Stanford with a healthy Plummer is likely #1 overall AND clearly a worthy #1 seed.

I am sure Stanford will be OK in any bracket assignment, but would hope they get a region #1 even if the team has 4-6 losses, most of those losses in contests without Plummer.

The match seemed to turn yesterday when the block improved. Strong blocking can offset inconsistency in other areas. It also fires the team up. Are there certain rotations that are more effective than others? Serve receive also improved vs. USC compared to Friday night vs. UCLA.

Stanford at 8-2 has a one game lead in the P12 standings over Cal, Washington, WSU and UCLA. The LA schools are at the Washingtons this weekend. Some of those 7-3 teams will be dropping back.

I thought I heard an announcer for the USC broadcast say that Hentz hadn't practiced all week due to injury.

Maybe she should just skip practice the rest of the season.  :)
