49ers - Mick - 11-01-2019

Interesting 49er game last night.  Very short week game, so I would be leery of sweeping generalizations.  Some takeaways:

- Garoppolo has now had sixteen starts for the Niners, a full season's worth.  He's completed 67.6% of his 490 passes for 4,066 yards with 24 TDs and 15 INTs.  That's a 96.5 rating with 8.3 ypa (same as Nick Mullens).  The rating makes him the 15th rated NFL QB over that span.  Last night, however, Garoppolo had 4 TDs and 317 yards on 28/37 passes for a 136.9 rating and 95.3 QBR.  For purposes of comparison, Dak Prescott leads the NFL in QBR for the season at 78.8 (Garoppolo is #7 in the NFL at 68.6).  He's 14-2 as a starter.  Hope it keeps up.

- Helping with that rating was new WR Emanuel Sanders who seems like the real deal.  Seven receptions for 112 yards.

- Breida averaged 5.2 ypc in 15 carries.

- Niners had three sacks and six tackles for loss.  No turnovers (on either side).

Bottom line, Niners played great for 50 minutes and good enough to win for 10 more minutes.

On TV they said the last time a 49'ers QB had 4 TDs and over 300 yards was Jeff Garcia in 2000.

Glancing at the Wikipedia list of starting QB's for the Niners, I had forgotten that Steve Stenstrom had three starts in 1999.

In the postgame, Richard Sherman owned up to not playing well including getting juked on an 88-yard pass play that let the Cardinals back into the game with five minutes left.

The ending was Stanford-esqe: take a two-score lead into the fourth quarter and take your foot off the gas to win in a nail-biter.  The only difference seemed to be that the Niners used a short passing game to burn the clock instead of running up the middle.

I don't think any foot was taken off any gas pedal. It was more like Shanahan had a 2 TD lead and wanted to see if they could run the ball.  The efficiency at which they convert 3rd downs because of Jimmy G makes it possible to go run heavy.

The thing to really keep in mind is that they converted most of the key 4th Q first downs by passing.

The 88 yd TD was kind of a fluke play - based on almost half a season of games - that made the game seem closer than it was. Had the D got a stop that drive it doesn't get interesting at the end.  I'm glad it did, because this team just hasn't been tested in close games too much.  The only other one was Pittsburgh, and had they not given the ball away 5 times, that game is a blowout win. So in the first half of the season, they had two close games, one at home and one on the road.  I'll take it.

The kid who caught the 88 yarder has EUTM speed.

Isabella ran a 4.31 40 at the combine.

I didn't have the audio on but Sherman was really jawing after that play, which seemed ironic because when he overran the pursuit, it changed from a 40-yd completion to an 88-yd TD.

Hope Saleh dials down the wide 9 formations. It puts a lot of strain on the LBs, now without Alexander. However, the Al Shahir kid shows potential.

I think he was angry that they went to man and single coverage.

49ers line play (on both sides of the ball) is good.
