WBB: Stanford 92 Eastern Washington 27 - 81alum - 11-04-2019

Preview:

After our highly encouraging outing against team USA, Stanford opens its season against Eastern Washington.  Eastern Washington was 13-20 last year and has just three juniors or seniors on their team.  They have three returning starters, including a 6'3" post and a pretty decent point guard.  Their coach talks a lot about their "depth" especially with their sophomore class.  They handily won their exhibition against Northwest University--not to be confused with Northwestern--a small liberal arts college in Seattle.

Overview:

This is a game we were supposed to win, and we did.  But unlike a lot of similar games over the last four years, we won it by an enormous margin, and our second team and third team kept extending the margin.  I don't remember a game in which our third string actually extended our lead--so this was a show of very great depth.  We knew that Belibi was good, but with 15 rebounds she is starting to look like a Kaylee Johnson who can finish at the basket too.  The biggest revelation to me was Prechtel, who started, and showed off a back-to-the-basket move to go along with 3/4 three point shooting.  So much for the theory that she lacks a back-to-the-basket move.  On offense, it seems she lacks nothing.  She is going to be a special player.

Performances:

Tara gave no one more than 20 minutes, and all 13 uninjured players played, and 12 scored--all but Lacie.  We shot at 57%, and held them to 13%.  We out rebounded them 45-20.  We had 24 assists to their 6.  It was a dominating performance.

No point in laboring too closely over the stats when the opponent was clearly overmatched.  But Belibi coasted to a double-double in only 18 minutes of play.  Prechtel led scoring with 15 points but also only with 18 minutes.  Jump missed her first two trey attempts and then went 4/5 the rest of the way.  Her stroke is smooth and very fast--faster than Bonnie or Karlie.  Jones had a couple of beautiful assists--she seemed to me to be almost TOO unselfish at time.

Wilson and Brown got lots of time at the point as Williams was kept to just 17 minutes.

Nobody got more than 2 fouls--probably because nobody played for more than a half.  Freshmen are so prone to fouls, usually, so it was good to see it is not thus far a problem.  That shows some maturity.

At the chalk talk, Lindy confirmed that the four freshmen need to work on their defense--particularly post defense.  The Stanford "scouting report" defense requires learning a lot of information and committing it to muscle memory so you can act on it without hesitation.  None of the new players have ever been asked to do anything like that before.  We can't really judge how they did with this last night because there wasn't really a scouting report--we had no current information on Eastern Washington, even though Eastern Washington has seen our game against USA.  So despite our success defensively--it was not a typical defense for us.

While it is harder for fans to observe and certainly less glamorous than offense, given that we will be able to get plenty of offense from many of our players--it is going to be those who are also effective on defense who gets most of the playing time.  That makes me this the Lexie will be high on the list.

Fingall looked to me like she still has a ways to go before she is a complete player again.  She labored up and down the floor and seemed to have a slight limp at times.  Dodson, we were told, has an injury that is healing slowly and it is hard to know when she will be back.  This means that Belibi and Prechtel should have lots of playing time for a while, which is exactly what they need.

Conclusion:

What an exciting time to be a Stanford WBB fan.  Many more should come out to the games.  True, Tuesday night is a lousy time for working families, but attendance was bad--supposedly 2277, but it did not look that large to me.  But we are watching the elements of a national championship team developing here.  If not this year, soon.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Eastern Washington 7pm Tuesday - TheFarm07 - 11-04-2019

I remember after our Elite 8 loss to N.D. how much I couldn't wait until the beginning of next season and now it's here...time flies by so quickly.

I am optimistic about the talent on this squad, but to be elite and contend against the likes of Oregon and Baylor for a national title, we need our two leaders DiJonai and Kiana to step up and deliver consistency night-in, night-out at a top level and our freshmen to quickly acclimate to the collegiate scene. We need to be varied offensively and not just rely on a hot three point shooting night to get us through games. Too many nail-biters last year when we just had cold shooting nights and couldn't get anything else going. Hopefully, Belibi, Jones and Prechtel and the return of Fingall (and hopefully Dodson before too long) can add some interior punch to complement the shooting prowess of Williams, the Hull sisters, Wilson and Jump.

Our very respectable showing against the national squad is encouraging. Never overlook anyone, but our opening slate of E. Washington, San Francisco and N. Colorado will allow us to ease into the season with Gonzaga and Buffalo tougher opponents, but we should be solidly favored in both, esp. at Maples. In my opinion, our first tough test will be in the Victoria later rounds (particularly if we face Mississippi State in the finals), followed by Tennessee and a tough road game at Texas.

Let the games begin!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Eastern Washington 7pm Tuesday - qwerty49 - 11-05-2019

Conventional wisdom says guard play determines how deep you go in the postseason.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say that we will go as far as our post play takes us this year.  I'm hoping for significant improvement from Fingall and Dodson, and some solid minutes from Belibi and Prechtel.  I think that could get us to the Elite Eight, and from there it's a crapshoot.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Eastern Washington 7pm Tuesday - 81alum - 11-05-2019

And we haven't mentioned Jones yet :)

So much will depend upon how fast the defense of Jones, Belibi, Jump, and Prechtel develop.  If any of them become solid defenders so that they can play long minutes then we could go quite far.

We will have so much offense on this team that we may not need much offensive output from the 5.  Dodson has been a good defender, and Fingall as well.  In the Princeton we need the 5 to stand at the elbow and be an excellent ball distributor, and take the easy shots if they come her way.  And swirling around that person in a series of cuts and moves we could have Jones, Lexie, Carrington, and Williams.  Not a bad crowd to be in the middle of!

I think Tara is mostly concerned at this point about defense.  Who will we use to stop the Ruthy Hebards on our schedule?  Which of our bigs can be that distributor on offense and at the same time be agile enough and tall enough to shut down the best posts we will encounter without always having to double?

Eastern Washington has 5 foreign players

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Eastern Washington 7pm Tuesday - BosCard - 11-05-2019

1st half over.  Tara with hockey style substitutions.  Team 1 - Williams, Brown, Carrington, Jerome and Prechtel.  Team 2 - Wilson, Jump, Hull, Jones, Belibi.  Call me crazy but I think Team 2 might be better than Team 1.  It's going to be a fun year and interesting to see what lineup Tara settles into.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Eastern Washington 7pm Tuesday - BobK - 11-05-2019

Belibi has really great hands. Love her ability to grab the rebound not just over but away from people.
I wrote long ago that Jump could shoot. Oh yes she can

65-19 after 3.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Eastern Washington 7pm Tuesday - BosCard - 11-05-2019

So the top 3 scorers are all freshman and that list shockingly does not include #1 recruit in the country Jones.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Eastern Washington 7pm Tuesday - CompSci87 - 11-05-2019

Jones seems to be looking to playmake more than shoot.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Eastern Washington 7pm Tuesday - 2006alum - 11-05-2019

That... was awesome. The last time I was this excited about Stanford at the start of the season was the last year we had two Ogwumikes, a Pohlen, and Pedersen. We were comprehensive from all parts of the floor. A few too many sloppy turnovers, but otherwise, almost all awesomeness.

Starting with the frosh:

Belibi - wow! If I wasn't already a Belieber, tonight was enough to show how much impact she'll have given how raw she still is. Incredible that we've had our first two Frosh double-double debuts in two years running.

Jones - Her box score isn't impressive, but wow, she has moves, and once she settles in, she will impact from everywhere.

Jump - Once she shook off her debut game jitters, I could see how she will be NextGen Karlie. Still has a ways to go on defense, but she could easily be the fourth Samuelson sister in terms of her stroke.

Prechtel - What can't she do? Blocks. One-handed rebounds. Fourth quarter trey treys. Is she the most underrated frosh post in WCBB?

For the upperclassmen, Jerome and Wilson definitely look a step more confident than last year, as well as Brown. Still waiting for her jump shot, but her finesse to get inside and get good looks at the basket is improved, as is her ability to generate off of steals and fast breaks.

Fingall looked so good given that she's basically 10 months out from ACL tear. Williams and Carrington were on autopilot. And Lexie is, well, the energizer bunny. What can't she do, all the time, offense and defense, everywhere?

After a few up and down years, this year's team is such a revelation. With so much room to spare, I can't wait to see how Tara makes the most of the cornucopia of talent she has this season.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Eastern Washington 7pm Tuesday - TheFarm07 - 11-05-2019

We handily took care of business and looked impressive doing so. Our depth is superb, even our "C" team is very solid.

Just my own two cents on the freshmen:

I think Haley Jones' "quiet" night is a reflection of her versatility and high basketball IQ. Tonight she didn't need to be a scorer, she recognized her teammates had open looks or the hot hand and she facilitated. I suspected if she had been on the other team, she would have looked to score a lot more often.

A consistent inside scoring threat is what we've been missing and though Belibi is still raw, you could see by her athleticism and moves to the basket that her ceiling is sky high. It was something that I had hoped Dodson would have.

Wow, Prechtel in my mind was the "forgotten" fourth member of the class in some ways with Jones' #1 ranking, Belibi's dunking prowess and Jump's shooting ability making the headlines, but if tonight was any indication of her ability to contribute, we are just spoiled. Her ability to stretch the floor coupled with her post presence blocking shots, she could be another coming of Alanna Smith.

Another wow for Jump and her quick three point releases, it's reminding me of how Karlie was automatic her last couple years shooting from the three and conjuring images of flailing opponents trying so hard to keep her from being open as to leave one of our other many weapons open for an easy shot.

A team composed of our freshmen would be highly competitive, but add them to a veteran squad with Kiana's shooting, DiJonai's toughness, Jerome's versatility, I could go on and on, but we all get the picture

We all know Tara is a mastermind of a coach, but in some years, she didn't have a high overall talent level to work with, but I cannot wait to see how she works her magic with all of the options at her disposal this year.

It would be interesting to see against a top level opponent, like an Oregon, whether she would substitute liberally or would she settle on a core 7 or 8 rotation.

RE: WBB: Stanford 92 Eastern Washington 27 - 81alum - 11-05-2019

Write up is done at the top.

RE: WBB: Stanford 92 Eastern Washington 27 - jonnyss - 11-06-2019

thanks for the detailed write-up.

i enjoyed that the freshman excelled in different ways: 15 rebounds for belibi, 5 blocks for prechtel (i saw one more than the 4 credited), 4 3-pointers from jump, 2 beautiful assists from jones.

i thought jump played excellent defense, especially for a freshman. she was reputed to be slow, but to my eyes she was quick and tight to her player. surprisingly good ball handler as well.

i am a great fan of haley jones, but to me she looked tentative and a bit lost. she fumbled the ball 4 or 5 times, unforced, and lost a couple of rebounds out of bounds in addition to her 2 turnovers. her court vision and passing are outstanding, but last night her handle was not. i can think of 2 mitigating factors: she has been injured, and she played multiple positions (mostly the 4), so she has way more to master than the other 3.

prechtel really sprints up the floor.

best game so far for jenna brown.

estella moschkau has quite a shot, but she will compete for time with hannah jump, our other 3-point specialist, whose defense seems stronger.

i can't remember the last time incoming freshman posts could hit free throws right away.

Agree with everything except I thought Jones looked pretty comfortable out there as well.  Yes the ball slipped out of her hands a few times but it did so for a number of other players as well.  For most of the time she was in, Jones was playing a point-forward role.  She was the 4 but was initiating a lot of the offense off the dribble.  She drives and then has to make a split second decision either to pass to an open 3-point shooter, pass to Belibi, continue the drive for a layup or shoot a short jumper in the lane.  What makes Jones so interesting in that role is that she has the size/shooting to do the latter two whereas it can be hard for our smaller point guards to try and score when they are well defended in the lane.

RE: WBB: Stanford 92 Eastern Washington 27 - teejers1 - 11-06-2019

The football-induced boycott of this site (and what I believe to be The Facilitators of the program's demise - i.e., all those who think Shaw is great and can do no wrong) is not enough to boycott the WBB commentary.  And that's because there is something very, very special happening right now with this program (as others have noted).

This team is talented.
This team is deep.
This team can shoot from the outside.
This team can score in the open floor.
This team can rebound.
And this team can D you up.

It may take some time, but I expect the ROW to "get it" at some point and get out to see this squad at Maples.  Last night was very enjoyable, from a hoops viewing standpoint, even though the final was a blowout.  And that's because this team does so many things well - even when building upon big leads.  A few minor comments/adds to this thread:

1.  Pretty sure Jump started 0-3 on treys and then hit her next four from behind the arc;

2.  The best 3-point shooters on the team - in terms of reliability (at least at this early stage of the season) - are Prechtel, Jump, and Williams.  But a host of other players can knock them down, too.

3.  The poster who said Prechtel reminded him/her of Keith Van Horne was so on the mark (and you can see that KVH has helped develop Prechtel's game).  She is fundamentally sound (and extremely good) in all aspects of the game.

4.  Haley Jones will be fine.  In fact, I thought she was good last night, and I really liked that she didn't force anything (although one TO on a take to the rack might have qualified - but there is a fine line between aggression and forcing things).  Best play of the night was Haley dribbling coast-to-coast and then pulling up for a short jumper, only to dump it off to Belibi for an easy deuce under the bucket.  Agree with the poster who said Haley will do what the game mandates.

5.  Lexie is the glue kind of player that every team needs (see Jillian Harmon), and I expect her to play a ton this season (probably not as much as Kiana Williams or even Carrington - but a lot).  But so many players on the roster will play important/meaningful minutes, including Prechtel, Jones, Belibi, Wilson, Jerome, Lacie and Brown (who looked good last night).

Deep, deep team . . . and it is going to Big Places this season!

Nice strawman there!  Did you build it yourself or did you buy one of those ready-to-use strawmen?

Can we leave football out of this thread?

Thanks to teejers for the WBB comments!

At least Teejers is favorably inclined to some Stanford sport.
I really don't think there are any people on this site who think Shaw can do no wrong.

RE: WBB: Stanford 92 Eastern Washington 27 - UltimateCard - 11-06-2019

In other season openers, Marta Sniezek started for the Fighting Irish, who barely outlasted Fordham (would they be the Rams or Ewes?!). Marta had six assists but five turnovers and only one point. Given how depleted the ND squad is, she'll get lots more PT (at least early in the season) than she would've if she had come back. In another game of interest, the Lady Vols squeaked by ETSU. So compared with how these two historic rivals did in their first games, the Cardinal are definitely looking strong!

After a few years, we all know each other's main riffs pretty well.  With or without emoticons, this is kinda a double snark, guys.  I'm as guilty as the next person when it comes to axes to grind, but in this case "bury the hatchet(s)" might be appropo.
