It looks like Team USA is going down despite a stellar game from Ogwumike.

Sabally, Ionescu, and Hebard just unreal for Oregon.

Ionescu finished with 30 points, on 50% shooting, along with 7 assists. Sabally dropped 25, and Hebard went for a quiet double-double of 18 points, 11 rebounds. Just unreal. This team has got to be the national front runners.

This is scary.  Maybe they should just send Oregon to the Olympics.  The only silver lining from Stanford's viewpoint is that this might cause Oregon to be overconfident.

Indeed.  Tara might yet work her magic against Oregon once in the 2-3 times we are expected to meet them this year.  But it also may be a good year to develop our young talent and get ready for a Pac12 and National Championship run next year, after the graduation of Ionescu, Hebard, and Minyon Moore.

We did, however, beat Oregon last year.  And we should be better equipped this year than last, if our frosh class develops well by springtime.  Anna Wilson held Ionescu down to 10/26 while Carrington and Smith went off offensively.  The key will be finding someone to defend Hebard.  It was Dodson last year, who did quite well at it.  We shall see how Prechtel or Belibi develop defensively--but surly shutting down Hebard has to be their goal.

I don't follow women's professional basketball much at all so I pose this as a question rather than an assertion:  is this national team not as good as it should be?  Are some of them getting kinda long in the tooth?  Nneka is clearly good, but what about.....

Maybe Phil Knight made a sizeable contribution to the USA team with a wink and a nod.  :=)

According to media reports, on this college swing, Team USA is without bigs Elena Delle Donne (league and championship MVP), Brittney Griner, and Tina Charles, any of whom could’ve slowed down Hebard. Also, A’ja Wilson, who was effective against us, didn’t play because of a death in the family. Still, the Ducks deserve recognition for their historic win. (By the way, Dawn Staley is the Team USA head coach but won’t be at the helm until after the college season.)

And yes the average of that team is high - Bird, Taurasi, Fowles and Augustus for example were key players last week. New blood needed.

Also the USA team will be adding Sabrina.

RE: WBB USA vs Oregon - TheFarm07 - 11-10-2019

Though yes, we do have players such as Bird, Taurasi, Fowles who are in the latter stages of their careers, I don't think we need to be too concerned with the future of USA basketball. I suspect the 2020 Olympics will be the last hurrah for many of these veterans, who have had legendary careers, and I think American women's basketball will still have a star studded roster to choose from afterwards.

Breanna Stewart isn't playing because of an Achilles injury she had last spring. One would think Ionescu's performance will put her on the short list for a future national roster very soon, probably Hebard as well. A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jewell Loyd, and Chiney Ogwumike are all still in their 20's as well.

RE: WBB USA vs Oregon - Jskass - 11-10-2019

I am not concerned in the least about the FUTURE of our USA WNT. Concerned about the present if sentimental loyalty to older players keeps them on the 2020 team ahead of players who right now are better. Period. No apologies to UConn fans either.

Who would you replace on the roster? Remember a few players such as Delle Donne, Charles, Griner, Stewart are not playing right now either.

Yes, the older players are no longer in the prime of their careers, but I would also wager a bet that the Oregon team would probably also beat the majority of the other national teams in the Olympics next year as well, so it's not like the US national team is floundering either.

RE: WBB USA vs Oregon - Jskass - 11-11-2019

Let me think that through carefully but initially I will say that the four you mentioned and Nneka and Aja should be on the team along with Maya Moore if healthy assuming she is in basketball shape. Not convinced that Bird, McCaughtry, Augustus or Taurasi all or possibly any merit tying up their spots. Diggins-Smith belongs there along with Chelsea Gray.

RE: WBB USA vs Oregon - Jskass - 11-11-2019

Nneka
Griner
Delle Donne
Aja Wilson
Stewart
Tina Charles
Maya Moore
Diggins-Smith
Chelsea Gray
Odyssey Sims
Jewell Loyd
Sabrina Ionescu

Tina Charles is the veteran. Or if no Charles since very strong in 4/5, add either Kayla McBride or Kelsey Plum.
