MBB vs. Long Beach State 6pm -

We are favored by 13.
By KenPom we are #89 (NIT-worthy!) and they are #275. In our first 2 games we were favored by 9.5 and 11 respectively (IIRC) and beat the spread both times. Montana #187 and Fullerton #241 by KenPom, so in theory CSULB is even worse.
However, this opponent has notoriously given us problems; 2 years ago they straight-up beat us, and last year's game was a down-to-the-wire nail-biter that our eventual 7 point victory doesn't reflect. Shouldn't have been that close.
Thoughts? Anyone going? A good friend of mine is, and I hope to ask her how attendance looks. I've heard the student section is showing up in a big way.

Thanks for the heads up. DVR has been set.

My thoughts are that any sort of rating system is meaningless this early in the season.
Glad we are beating the teams we should beat, and hoping that continues. But hoping we also beat some teams that we are even with and even score a few upsets.

The team is looking good against Long Beach State so far. 18-7 at the 13 minute mark.

We are taking it all the way to them. Playing inspired, tenacious defense and capitalizing on it. Very fun to watch.
40-16 with just under 4 to go in 1H.
Fun fact: UCLA beat this team by 4 points in their opener. Lol.

86-58 final. Hard to be upset at too much, considering we were favored by 13 and obliterated the spread.

Im shocked and very happily surprised. And I’m thrilled. We looked very good. Long Beach definitely the best team we have played

What did Andy DuFresne say was "the best of things" in Shawshank? Oh, that's right: "Hope."
It's hard not to let that notion in watching this team to date. No clue on game stats because for some inexplicable reason, the in-Maples scoreboard was not working (which is just brutal). But here are a few observations:
#1. The ball movement and shot selection was generally excellent all night long. I literally can't remember the last time I was so impressed with ball movement and shot selection.
#2. The D was, again, very solid. This team has no bigs to speak of - certainly no dominant ones - so every Cardinal will have to help on the boards. We saw that again tonight.
#3. Ty Terry and J. Delaire had monster games, and many others - Jones, Da Silva, Keefe, and others - played very well. DD was hampered by foul trouble, but he knocked down both his treys. White had at least three three-point plays: two treys and an and-one.
Again, I don't know if LBSU is any good - I thought Montana looked significantly better - but this Cardinal team routed them.
All in all, quite enjoyable.
P.S. Really disappointing "crowd," but not unexpected for a Tuesday night, 6 bells tipoff. 6th Man almost as empty as everywhere else. Glad the team self-motivated and played best game of this young season.
P.P.S. How long has Long Beach State had "Beach" as formal mascot?

Ucla recently beat Long Beach by 4. I like that comparison

I've been impressed with the two freshmen Tyrell Terry and Spencer Jones. Both great additions ready to play right away. Not to mention returners who have improved.

That should be the first real test of the season for us - kind of. By KenPom, Santa Clara is #119 and we're #85. (Wazzu is #138.) The only non-total-cupcake opponent until Oklahoma in a couple weeks.

Great win for the good guys! Only complaint was that second-half run--I think it was 18-4--by The Beach. If you want to know why they are called "The Beach," visit

As someone else said, saying "Long Beach State Beach" is analogous to "The Los Angeles Angels."

Just watched on my DVR—that was fun! Don’t sleep on this team, starting 2 Frosh.
Nice to see some WBB members at the game (at least one Hull...I can’t tell them apart without uniform numbers...and a few others).

And I really enjoy listening to Mike Montgomery give commentary.

According to KenPom, Evansville--who just beat Kentucky at Rupp--is #136!
I think it takes a couple of months before these rankings start to make sense.

Thanks for the link (I thought Long Beach State Beach" was a recent development).
So now is the Gold Rush in California synonymous with the subjugation of native Californians and other peoples? Interesting.
And I loved the statute relocation line - would that new locale be inside the port-a-potty down the LF line of the IM coed softball diamond?

Not sure if this has always been the case, but my son's public elementary school in Santa Barbara covered California history in fourth grade. If you are living in CA and really want to know what they are teaching 10 year-olds these days, you can look up the fourth grade curriculum for your local school district. For what it's worth, I don't think you can accurately cover the history of CA without discussing the fate of native Californians in the mission, rancho and gold rush eras.
