This is a great class that really reloads the roster for the next few years. 2019-20 is a rebuilding year after losing two of the top 20 amateurs in the country off a championship year, which is just fine.
RE: Men’s Golf signees -

An especially intriguing class because Vilips could be an elite #1, Thornbjornsen looks like a sold 3-4, and Beber-Frankel can go very low, a wonderful asset in drop score stroke play team golf.
On paper, this almost rivals the Liu, Badhwar, McNeally class. Given that Liu lasted only a year and Badhwar became a merely solid 3-4, this class could be the highest impact recruiting class ever.

on paper, this is a much stronger class. if anyone approaches Mav's development trajectory while in school, it will be a very special class.
some of the non-revenue sports could really show our lead revenue sport some things about recruiting....

Slide, Jimmy Liu was #2
in the world and Virat was fourth or fifth.
McNeally, on paper, was the weak link.
At that time, that might have been the best college golf recruiting class of the decade, as I recall it.

yes, Hulk, I recall and I have seen them all play (although a couple of the new guys only on video). recall Mav went from also ran signee to the star. Mav was really really modest. I recall his initial goal was to help the team and to break 70 in competition as a FR.
I am not sure which of the 3 newcomers will improve to such a degree but if one does, it will be a really special class.
I'm old enough to recall the program pulling in the World Jr Champ, the Cal State Jr Champ, the #1 jr in Florida, a top Canadian and a reigning Cal High School champ in a single class. we were unbeatable at the Goose or Zotts.

25-year-old whippersnapper here. The Dutch Goose and The Alpine Beer Garden, aka Rosotti's (Zott's), are wonderful establishments near campus where one can consume large quantities of alcohol. I can 100% confirm Stanford athletes are quite good at it.

Virat did manage to post a 59 at Stanford GC.

And then of course there was the 1994 recruiting class, which featured the greatest player of his generation.

Golf Week class of 2020 rankings:
2 Karl Vilips
6 Jake Beber-Frankel
9 Michael Thorbjornsen
I wonder if the championship did for recruits
what it did for me:
make me wonder if Ray has some magic.
Going into the season,
I gave them little chance of cracking the top ten.
No Stanford team in any sport ever startled me as much.
Perspective:
Wu averaged 72.7 as a freshman and 70.6 his final two years;
Salinda averaged 73.1 as a freshman and 70.8 last season;'
Shimp averaged 77.7 as a freshman, 71.7 last season;
Snyder dropped from 73.6 as a freshman, 71.9 last season.
That is crazy.

The numbers you provide are proof that Stanford's coaching staff is helping the team's players shoot lower scores, which is remarkable and not common for collegiate golf team rosters.

Hard to believe we've gotten to post #14 and no one's mentioned the hair...
It's hard enough to play on windy days. With that impressive coiffure, it must really take some skill! [Of course, he presumably doesn't have to do that thing with throwing little pieces of grass in the air to check direction and speed...]

yes, 59 on the "new" course.
Couples, with borrowed clubs, and in tennis shoes (and perhaps a drink in hand), shoots 60 in the fundraiser on the new course.
in persimmon and balata days (and pre change to par 3 par 3 on #3 and #4), I think 65 was the course record in competition.

Yes, persimmon and balata.
I played most of my competitive golf within 50 feet of sea level,
in 50 degree ocean air, on rain dampened and sometimes rain soaked golf fairways--
with a persimmon driver with a head the size of a cigarette pack--
and balata balls.
Four of our state's top ten players played our 450 yard fifth hole
at least three times.
None of them ever reached the green in two.
The difference between a two iron and a driver
was about twenty yards.

Made my first hole in one at Stanford with a balata ball. Made my second one this year with a ProV1x.

Made my aces with a red Titleist 2 (80 compression, iirc, age 14), my second with a Wilson Staff 3 (age 18), both balata. The first and only time I caddied, age 13, my guy aced the tenth hole, of course with a balata. And I've seen two more in person--none by a pro.

I remember thinking that there was no better sound than a balata ball being struck solidly by a persimmon driver. Very few things felt better, too.
