I bought a hat today - Rando - 08-27-2011

I have season tickets. All I need is the apparel and parking stuff taken care of before Sept. 3rd. Anyways I went to "Sports Fever" near Sacramento to buy a Stanford hat today. It took them about 15 minutes to find ONE Stanford hat. They had a few shirts. But they were the crappy gray shirts. They really didn't have much as far as Cardinal goes. And we're only 2 hours if that, away from Palo Alto, CA.

The biggest thing that bothered me was they had tons of USC and Cal hats. They even had a couple of Colorado State, Virginia hats, a bunch of random hats from random schools that aren't even in California. Yet they had trouble finding the #3 or #4 ranked team in the AP poll? WTF.

Sigh .... I'd LIKE to believe that all the Cardinal paraphernalia sold out earlier this summer?

I know the guy who is the manager there. I highly doubt that.

He was telling me that they'll probably have more Stanford stuff when the season starts. It was just annoying how they had multiple Colorado State hats and like 20 C.A.L. and U.S.C. hats, two teams not even really ranked. We are in the top 10 and have a Voldemort candidate, and 2012 #1 overall pick...you'd think they'd have some of his jerseys, but nope.

It's not a licensing/availability issue is it?  I wonder if the bottleneck is at the manufacturer.

Nah. They gotta move all the old Kings gear - Redrum - 08-27-2011

Before they have space for more Stanford stuff.

I lost it in one of my many moves,  but one of my treasured possessions was a Sacramento Surge hat.  You never heard of them, but they were one of Sacramento's wannabe efforts to be a first-class American city...something they will NEVER stop trying to be.    A World League of American Football (WLAF...just trips off the tongue, doesn't it?)team bringing America the best QBs from Louisiana Monroe and Weber St.  It was a LAFfer all right.  I never went to a game and nobody else did either.  But for two years there,  Sacramento was right up there with Boston, New York,  Dallas and Chicago.

Point is:  buy up the old Kings gear.  It'll be worth something on EBay in forty years and each piece you buy makes room for Stanford stuff.

The kids that might want to show their support for the things that Stanford and Stanford Athletics represent are more than capable of ordering online.  Most older types that might support Stanford are alums, parents, faculty or staff and/or locals, and they are unlikely to drift into national malls to buy Stanford gear.  For another example, Duke basketball is obviously great and has been great for some time, but it is far easier to find UNC gear.  That's just the way it goes for smaller private schools.

These mall stores need to dedicate their shelf space to fast turning items, and a product with a big boring "S" representing a school with only one great football year in the last 40 is is not going to turn.

But props to you for supporting our national economy and the Stanford brand.

I was on campus on Friday (ironically going to buy a hat I swear) and it was CRAZY busy with tour groups.  And those groups do seem to find their way to the bookstore after the tours.  But even those groups were not interested in Stanford Athletics gear.  They seemed far more focused on getting classic Stanford stuff that a high school senior might wear if things go well with the admissions staff.
