WBB: Stanford 88 Buffalo 69 - 81alum - 11-23-2019

Preview:

In another triumph of scheduling, on Sunday Women's soccer starts against Penn State at 1pm, and Women's basketball starts against Buffalo at 2pm.  Buffalo is a good team--perhaps not as polished as Gonzaga, but they were 4-0 until coming west to play SJSU and us.  Thursday they unexpectedly lost to SJSU, but only after dominating the first half and having one player go 8/16 from three point range.  Last year they played us very tight and close using a quick 3-2 zone that stymied our offense for everyone not named Alanna.  Our three point shooting was awful.  They focused their defense on Dijonai who was coming off a great Tennessee game.  A repeat performance like last year--given we don't yet have the inside offense to replace Alanna's--and we could lose this game.  Buffalo graduated its star and best player from a year ago, but has incoming freshman Dyaisha Fair, who is starting, playing 37 minutes, averaging 26 points, and shooting 40% of her treys.  She is the one with the 8 treys against SJSU.  This team is every bit as good as the Buffalo team that could have beaten us last year.  We will need superb perimeter defense and a big inside game from one of our freshmen.  Perhaps this is an opportunity for Anna Wilson to work her defensive magic against Dyaisha Fair.

Last year's write up:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=17019&highlight=buffalo

Overview:

Buffalo is a good team with an amazing frosh player, and they kept the game tight until midway through the 3rd quarter.  Then Lexie sparked a 10-0 run to provide some breathing room.  Lexie's 21 points and Prechtel's 17-10 double-double keyed our offense.

Before the Game:

We learned that Buffalo plays a quick 3-2 zone, which is incidentally the same defense that Oregon plays, and we had been practicing all week to attack it.  The weakness in the 3-2 zone are three point shots from the corners (baseline.)  Once the game started we saw the team attempt mightily to execute the gameplan, passing crisply to launch treys from the corners whenever possible.

Flow of the Game:

We had 9 turnovers in the first half and began the game with quite mediocre three point shooting and free throw shooting.  Our weakest link, though, was giving up a whopping 21 offensive rebounds to Buffalo.  Those factors kept Buffalo within striking distance for more than half the game, even though we had 10 blocks to their 0 and shot 51% to their 38%.  Every time we pulled away a little they would come back, and we were up only 35-32 at the half.  Defending Fair was very difficult--Williams could not seem to keep Fair in front of her, and Fair had uncanny accuracy whether bombing treys or driving on the basket.

Williams hit a 3 pointer to lead off the third quarter, followed by a trey from Lexie, and I began to think the worst was behind us.  But Fair stole the ball for a fast break layup, and they followed up with another layup off an offensive rebound to close the margin to 3 at 5:24.  Prechtel, Lexie, and Jump combined to give us a 10-0 spurt, and by the end of the quarter we were up 63-52.

In the fourth quarter our depth showed, and the double digit lead held up and widened to 19 points.  Moschkau was 2/2 from three point range during that stretch.  When Buffalo closed to within 10 Lexie came back into the game to stabilize the situation.  We won by 19 but it was a much closer game most of the way.

Performances:

Lexie is turning into our best player.  She played some good defense--frequently on Fair--and led scoring at the other end with 21 points including 4/11 from three point range.  She also dished 3 assists.  After she picked up her second foul in the 2nd quarter and had to leave the game, we struggled to score.

The absence of a fully healthy, experienced post has allowed Prechtel to blossom.  Not only did she score 17 and snag 10 rebounds, she also dished 3 assists and had 2 blocks.  The Buffalo posts went around her in the paint a couple too many times, but Prechtel's offense is quite good.  She cleaned up a couple of three point misses and converted, and she does not appear to miss any bunnies.  It is a markedly more polished offensive presence compared with the performances of any other freshman post I have seen since Chiney.

Just like the Gonzaga game, Williams had only 2 points in the first half, but came alive in the second with 12.  No matter what she does on offense, Tara leaves her in--she is the only player who consistently plays in the high 30 minutes.  She had 7 assists to 1 turnover.

Haley Jones played 26 minutes, was 4/6 for 10 points, had 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks.  She fills up a stat line.

Hannah Jump came in and hit 3 treys.  Estella Moschkau came in and hit 2 treys.  These were all important to breaking the zone.

Carrington played 16 minutes and went 2/8 with 6 rebounds.  After the game Tara noted that Carrington's off season surgery had prevented her from practicing all summer, and she was still getting back into form.  Everyone else had a head start.  "But she will be there when we need her."

Jerome and Fingall each played about 15 minutes, each made 1 basket, Jerome had 6 rebounds and Fingall had 3 blocks.

Brown, Wilson, Lacie, and Belibi all played in the single digits.

Conclusion:

I think Gonzaga and Buffalo were probably good games to play to get prepared for a very tough tournament in Canada.  After our first game, we can expect to play Syracuse, whose speedy little guard Kiara Lewis just hung 23 on Oregon in a game that they played even for 3/4 quarters.  And if we reach the finals it would probably be Mississippi State, the #2 team in the computer rankings (Massey.)  We have a big challenge around the corner and the freshmen are going to have to grow up fast, given that Fingall and Carrington are still getting back into shape after injuries, and given that Dodson may or may not be available.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Buffalo 2pm Sunday - M T - 11-23-2019

I don't think Stanford gets much say as to when NCAA matches are scheduled.   I can't really complain that Friday's WSoc game bumped WVB off PAC-12-BA so I wound up recording the 1AM showing (in that recording, the scores were 23-25, 6-8, 10-12, 21-14.  Sigh... cut short to give time for 2 of the 97 showings of "PAC-12 Playlist" overnight).   Yeah, parking will be a hassle with overlapping events.

I will point out that the WSoc game may be on PAC-12-AZ live ("Teams: TBA".  When I started this post, this game was listed as men's soccer, but changed while I was composing it).  As I type, there is no repeat showing scheduled.   The WBB will only be on a Stanford scoreboard feed.

I'm thinking about missing both WSoc & WBB on Sunday because of the MWP.  If Stanford wins against UCLA today (1PM Berkeley, conflicting with some other game starting at the same time), they'll be in the MPSF championship match Sunday at 3PM in Berkeley, likely against USC. (The winner of Sunday's 3PM game will likely be seeded #1 in the NCAA tournament.)

Ah, the curse of having so many great teams.... (and congrats to the CC teams, and the FH team)

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Buffalo 2pm Sunday - 81alum - 11-24-2019

I just noticed on Buffalo's press release that they are the only team in the nation to have 2 different 30+ point  scorers so far this season.  Dyaisha Fair, the freshman who is reminiscent of Aari McDonald is the one I called out in the original preview.  But Theresa Onwuka, a 5-10" senior guard from Nigeria, is the other.  She is shooting 58% and only a little less from three point range.  She and Fair also have a gob of steals.

We will need good ball handling against those guards, and good perimeter defense.  And we need to be prepared to kill a very quick zone.

3 pts lead at half. Something still off with Dijonai. Too many To's, missed fts

Fair is a stud for Buffalo. Blowing by Kiana. Can’t believe she is just a frosh.

They’re still without Summer Hemphill, their top player.

Shaw was the coach first half. Now Tara back and said no more lay ups for Buffalo
:)

Started slow, but we finished 88-69.  Didn’t feel like a 20 pt game, but I’ll take it.

Really like that this was a team win.  Buffalo's defense is designed to clog the lane but gives up open corner 3's.  To counter that they trap in the corner and use that to generate turnovers.  To beat them you really need three point shooters who can hit under pressure.  So a big part of this win goes to Jump and Moschkau who combined to hit 5 big three's.  Love that when necessary we have the 3 point marksmen to counter this defense.  And kudos to Prechtel for finishing inside so well.  And certainly the mainstays Lexie and Williams played really well too.  And a nice all around game from Jones as well.  So much versatility on this team.  Definitely not a Belibi type game as she needs room to drive and they clogged the lane taking away her offense.

Write up done at the top.  A nice win against a tough opponent.  Now a VERY challenging tournament Thanksgiving weekend.

It is nice that we have so much versatility and so many weapons that we can mix and match depending on who we are facing. I think our depth is really going to be a key advantage for us this year.

The 21 offensive rebounds given up is troubling and the early turnovers. We also have to get the killer instinct and put away quality opponents. I felt in the second half when we started pulling away a little, we relaxed and Buffalo would go on a mini-run to get back within striking range. The tougher opponents who have had recent success are not going to back down even when they are down. They have the confidence to keep fighting and giving them a chance. Likewise, we'll have to shut that door and make sure that 10-pt lead balloons to a 15 or 20 point lead.

I thought our freshmen were again critical to our victory. Not to diminish Lexie, who I agree is our best player right now or Kiana's critical points in the fourth, but it was Hannah's quick release 3 pointers over the Buffalo zone, Prechtel's range plus offensive rebounding/putbacks and Haley's versatility that allowed us to spark our offense in the second half. Buffalo couldn't just focus their defensive efforts on Lexie and Kiana alone. We can attack and score from our five spots on the floor.

The Victoria tournament will definitely be a challenge. After an easy first round matchup, Syracuse looks very tough after they gave the Ducks all they could handle for three quarters and if we get past the Orange, then a top five/ten (depending on the rating system) matchup with Mississippi State looms. It's a great test for us and will continue to push the freshmen to perform at a high level.

Hopefully DiJonai can round into form and Maya can come back before too long. We've been playing decently without too much contribution from the former and the absence of the latter. If we can get them back and playing well, then we'll be even more dangerous. DiJonai doesn't look confident from what I can tell. She's at her best when she's sure of herself and playing aggressively, whether that's shooting her shot or driving to the basket or reaching up and getting the rebound. Maya's presence as a shot-blocker and defensive presence can complement Ashten's still developing interior defensive game.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Buffalo 2pm Sunday - Spiny_Norman - 11-24-2019

Stanford was 7-17 from 3 in the 2nd half and a ridiculous 14-18 from 2 point range.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Buffalo 2pm Sunday - martyup - 11-24-2019

I wonder why Belibi only got 2 minutes on the floor.  Also, Jones needs to work on her free throw shooting.  2-6 will not cut it.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Buffalo 2pm Sunday - chimera - 11-24-2019

Start was fine as it was against Gonzaga, but then turnovers and missed shots let Buffalo get close again, and the first half was a fight, which was also similar to the previous game.  This game was better in that we pulled away quickly enough in the second half that the worry was would they catch up enough to scare us rather than uh oh we are losing and it is getting late. I very much hope Carrington gets back into the flow.  We need her energy and physicality.  The main issue today was turnovers, and some bad ones too, that led to easy points for Buffalo.  Buffalo had some luck too.  Does #1 usually hit those very, very, very long threes like she did?  I do think it was an overall better effort than against Gonzaga, not anywhere close to as well as the team can play even at this stage, but better.

The best part of the game for me was Prechtel playing so well.  She seems to have a knack for being in the right place for putbacks and is a good passer generally also.  She still has a way to go on defense.  She is not bad, just needs experience.  Lexie Hull had a nice game too, cooled off some later in the game but overall a very nice game from her.  Williams again asserted herself when needed, and had a sneaky good game where you don't realize how many assists and points she has until you see the box score.  Jones played well.  So did Jump, who was in for a decently long stretch and held up on defense against a very quick team.  If she can do that and hit those threes, she will play.

Seems to me with two of our seniors coming back from surgery (Fingall and Carrington), and Dodson still out, we are a much younger team as far as who is getting time than maybe was the plan.  That bodes well since the frosh will improve given experience, and the more experienced players should round into form with time.  Not sure what it means for the Thanksgiving tournament.  I don't know that things will come together for wins over a team like MSU or even Syracuse, should we play those teams.  Need to cut the turnovers, that's for sure, and hit the boards better.

My favorite moment was Moschkau grabbing the missed rebound, and on the same play makes the 3.

Williams is becoming a 2nd half performer on offense.  2 points in the first half of both of the last two games, and many more points in the second half.

Tara explained Carrington.  Because of her surgery she did not practice all summer.  She is months behind everyone else, but should round into form in time.

None of the coaches is letting on about Dodson at all.  We really need her defense by the time we go up against the likes of Hebard, Tamari Key, etc.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Buffalo 2pm Sunday - CompSci87 - 11-25-2019

Tempie did say Dodson is getting closer every day.

But that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Assuming she's ever coming back, then technically she is getting closer every day, to whenever that will be. :-/

Did I miss something about Fingall spraining her hands?  How many rebounds did she lose to them?  Of the ones she managed to get her hands on, I saw one taken away down low, and another taken away over her head.   After she came back in after an early foul, Buffalo went through her for 8 straight points.  Her player (52 Gaba, who looked surprisingly good to me) scored 3 baskets, and Fingall played toreador with Fair, stepping out of her way so she could get a layup.   During that stretch, she missed 2 FTs.  (She is also credited for missing a layup, but one of the Buffalo players almost got enough riding time to qualify for the Grand National Rodeo, so the miss shouldn't be counted against Fingall.  But it wasn't called a foul by Anita Ortega, Kent Johnson (Leslie Nielsen hair), or Teresa Turner.  IMO, this was a much worse called game than the previous one.  But I will say they missed fouls and called non-existent fouls against both teams.)

Yeah, Tara is using this part of the season to try to strengthen the substitutes and frosh.  I would put Fingall's time in that category.  Precthel (double-double in just 22 minutes) was better at both ends of the court.   Jerome didn't get much playing time (2 min. less than Fingall), but she still garnered 6 rebounds  vs 2.

Some of Buffalo's 3s would have been good for Bonnie Samuelson.  Wow.

In the after-the-game talk, Tara mentioned that the team had been warned about #1 hitting those 3s.
6'3" Loren Christie was 3 of 14 from 3pt range coming into the game (now 6 of 21).
