Anyone interested in the Apple Cup today? - JohnR34231 - 11-29-2019

I'm originally from Seattle, so I always have been.

Although not a h.uge amount is at stake, Washington is very beatable this year so it is probably the Pirate's best chance in a while.

Although the Husky DC is from Spokane, he doesn't have much use for the Cougs.
After last year's game he said he always looked forward to playing Wazzu because they are so easy to defend. "They have been doing the same thing for the past five years".
Any chance we could hire this guy?

I have never paid any attention to this game, but finding someone who can defend the Pirate interests me greatly.  Has he actually done a good job at this?

Well, he hasn't been the DC the whole time, but he has been on the defensive staff (as DB coach) for several years.
During that period the most points the Cougs have scored against Washington is 17.
So draw your own conclusions.

I hope Shaw one day sees the light and hires a defensive staff that can actually improve Stanford’s tackling. Fat chance.

Why is there no Shaw coaching tree?

There is. As a Stanford guy, his is a palm tree. . . .

There is.

Wait, sorry, let me rephrase.

There's a David Shaw branch of the Jim Harbaugh coaching tree.

Derek Mason went from DC to HC at Vanderbilt.
Mike Bloomgren went from "OC" to HC at Rice.

But you would be hard-pressed to name a next one.

I am always interested in the Apple Cup because I grew up in Seattle as a Husky fan.  I suffered one of the coldest games of my life at the 1970 Apple Cup in Spokane.  The Husky coaching staff always tried to sensitize out-of-state players to the importance of the rivalry.  In the immortal words of one assistant coach: "Listen, guys, you don't want to lose to Washington State.  It's like stepping in dog crap, except it's worse, because you don't get a chance to wash it off for a year."

Washington leads the rivalry 73-32-6, and Washington's current win streak is 6.

Mason was hired by Shaw's predecessor. Bloomgren was indeed hired by Shaw. He was an AOC under Ryan with the Jets for awhile.

Watching the Apple Cup right now.  Gordon has all day to pass on the Cougs first drive.  Looks eerily similar to our (non-existent) pass rush.

After Gordon went 9/10 on the first drive, you wonder whether Washington’s DC’s hubris was predicated on having superior athletes on defense.  Vita Vea and Buddha Baker can make anyone look like a genius DC.

BC

After one drive for each team, total yards are 81 to -1.

Dawgs equalize late in the 1st quarter.

True: Washington's defense looked anemic on that first drive, but got a stop on the second drive.  Let's see whether the Washington DC can figure out how to stop Gordon.

Didn't realize the Redskins were playing down a league this season!

Nice one.  But of course, you knew what I meant.... ;-)

Dawgs decided to go for it on 4th and 5 at the Cougar 36 and are rewarded with a TD and now lead 14-10.  The commentator noted: "I guess Petersen figured if they're playing Washington State, they need to score."  Shaw did not have that same urgency early in the game and punted.

Dawgs starting to get penetration.  Cougs now backed up against their own goal line.

Yeah, watching.  UW my dad's alma mater; my husband is a Leach acolyte.  So we're rooting for different teams.
Halftime and it looks like the Cougs are cougin' it.

If the Coug O-line can't protect Gordon, then it's curtains for Wazzu.

Since that first drive, Washington has held WSU to two field goals and forced two interceptions and a fumble. So after that early stumble, they’ve managed to como down on WSU.

The flexibility of the air-raid system is pretty impressive and does allow for a high TOP-style of offense if the passing accuracy is high (i.e., Gordon was 9/10 on that first drive).  But pressure up the middle is the Achilles heel of the air-raid system; and the Huskies eventually managed to get to Gordon with some well-timed blitzes.  When that started happening, the Cougs got behind the chains, got out of their rhythm, started turning the ball over and were neutered offensively.  They also had a few questionable penalty calls go against them; but, hey, the zebras were from the Pac-12 officiating pool.  DC Lake still has Leach's number.
