Stanford's All-Time vs. Notre Dame team - Mick - 11-29-2019

I thought I'd suggest a little twist on the All-Time/All-Era Stanford teams.  Here's my All-Time list of Stanford players who played against Notre Dame (1924 season/1925 Rose Bowl, 1942, 1963-4, most seasons since 1988):

QB  Andrew Luck (2009 first team all conference, 4TDs v. ND 2011).

RB  Ernie Nevers.  Had more yards in 1925 Rose Bowl than the Four Horsemen combined.  Voted best college player of first half century.  One of only two numbers retired by Stanford (Plunkett).  Plus he was a local, Santa Rosa HS, Santa Rosa JC, was in inaugural College Football Hall of Fame.

RB  Touchdown Tommy Vardell.  Scored four TDs vs. Notre Dame, 1990.  Then Toby Gerhart, 205 yards vs. Notre Dame, 2009.  McCaffrey, Bryce Love backup.  HM for Anthony Bookman and Mike Mitchell, 142 and 135 yards respectively in 1997 v. ND.

FB  Owen Marecic who scored on both sides of the ball vs. Notre Dame.

WR  Troy Walters, 8 recpts 183 yards vs. ND 1999.  Jim Lawson, Stanford's first all american, 1924 and Ted Shipkey, Stanford's first multiple AA.  Ed McCaffrey.  Shipkey and Nevers played all 60 minutes in RB vs. Notre Dame.

TE  Jim Price, 14 receptions vs. Notre Dame, 1989.  Also Zach Ertz.

OLs  David DeCastro, Eric Heitmann, Joshua Garnett, Bob Whitfield.

C  Chase Beeler, Marv Harris, 2x 1st team all Pac-8, 1963/4.

DL  Solomon Thomas, Henry Anderson, Willie Howard, Gary Pettigrew, 1964 1st team all conf,

LB  Trent Murphy (season high 10 tackles vs. Notre Dame), Shayne Skov (8 tackles, forced fumble v. ND), Chase thomas (fumble return for TD, 2012 v. ND), jack Chapple (2nd rd NFL pick , 1964)

S   John Lynch, if only for the massive hit on the Bus.

DB  Dick Ragsdale, 11 career INTs, 1st team all conf in 1963/4, Ed Reynolds, Kevin Scott, Jordan Richards

K  Nate Whitaker, 5 FGs in 5 atts vs. Notre Dame, 2010

Owen Maricec didn’t just score on both sides of the ball against Notre Dame, he scored on consecutive plays.  First he scored on a one yard touchdown dive; on the very next play from scrimmage he scored on a pick-six.

For Notre Dame John Huarte and Jack Snow killed Stanford. Stanford made Brady Quinn look like Johnny Unitas. The Domer pitcher had a field day in Stanford Stadium.

On the day Price caught all those passes the Domers won handily.
