OT: Mike Leach Loses It in Post-Apple Cup Conference - Snorlax94 - 11-30-2019

I wonder if Leach will finally face consequences for his conduct. Time and again, he behaves in a manner that should embarrass any university that cares at all about its broader reputation. Attacking a news writer like this should not be acceptable.

If WSU doesn’t censure him and if he isn’t required to apologize, that place will be considered a joke.

Leach has been saying things like that for years. The guy does not lose gracefully.
I remember when we beat them in 2015 some reporter questioned him about his playcalling in the second half. His response: "Are you some kind of idiot? Next question."
Somehow I think if the Wazzu moguls were going to censure him for it they would have done it by now.
Speaking for myself, when we start beating them regularly again I may consider them a joke.

I chalk it up to Leach having the highest WAR for any P5 coach. Why? Because anyone who has spent much time in Pullman will realize that, from a recruiting standpoint, the place is already a joke. I'm not sure I can think of a P5 school location that is more of an uphill climb in terms of recruiting, being that WSU is a poorly resourced public school in a very rural area, with not terrific weather for most of the school year, not near any major city or airport, and in a relatively low-key wider region for HS football talent. Truly, the deck is so stacked against the Cougs in terms of recruiting players (and coaches).

Given all that, Leach knows he has a very long leash, provided he keeps winning, because his Wins Above Replacement is probably among the highest among P5 coaches.

Sounds like a parting shot...

I don’t have any problem with Leach. He beats the pants off David Shaw with far inferior recruiting classes. He plays the victim very well, and that is gonna go over very well to the WSU fan base. They are the poor stepchild in the PAC-12 and are quite disadvantaged to the Huskies in particular. It is of course nonsense that he pretends to not care about what the columnist writes. But it does show he cares about winning and that he is somewhat bothered by the fact he can’t bring in the quality of players he would like.

He’s been using that “play with 9” phrase ever since he was at Texas Tech. It basically means players not trusting their teammates and getting out of position. This usually manifests on defense

Please don’t come to me with the overall record Shaw has vs. Leach. Once Leach had his program with credible talent Stanford is just about 0-5 against WSU, needing them to miss a last second FG to not have a 5-game losing streak to WSU instead of the still embarrassing 4-game one that does exist.

Yeah, I have always said Leach is the ideal coach for Wazzu.
He can win there, but has just enough baggage so he is not hired away by a more prestigious program.
As far as him occasionally putting his foot in his mouth is concerned, I think it bothers Cardboarders more than it does the Coug faithful.
It does bother him, I'm sure, that every time he goes up against the Huskies for a top recruit he knows that he is almost definitely going to lose.

Sportswriters who have columns are critics. They have in most cases a working knowledge of the sport or coach that they criticize and are in general not afraid to criticize. Coach Leach has a working knowledge of journalism so I believe it is his right to criticize the writers. Why should he be censured? There was no profanity or violence in his reply. Sorry that it bothers you guys but on the Billy Martin or Bobby Knight scale this is low level stuff.

Well, I think what Leach said goes beyond the realm of mere criticism.
But, once again, I think it doesn't bother the sportswriters that much. Perhaps they even bait him because they know he will say things like that when they do.
It gives them more to write about.

Leach at least has a pulse. Can’t say that for some other coaches.

My goodness. Who could you conceivably be talking about?

The pre-cursor to Leach:

And this guy coached for Stanford once:

Leech is, of course, WSU’s coach, not ours.  What he says in the post game pressers is their business, not ours. I’ve only brought him up because some people here have criticized Shaw for not “taking responsibility after a loss”, while others lionize Leech for what he’s done at WSU.

Ambivalent towards Leach, as I save my opposing coach disdain for Urban Meyer. Anyway, the best thing Leach ever did was locking the sniveling son of Craig James into a closet. His biggest mistake, not tossing James in with him. Glad karma caught up with James; looking forward to the day it catches up with Meyer. Perhaps at SC after the Trojans can Helton.

His method acting is a little over the top for my tastes, but in terms of content, I'm totally feeling this. And the sentiment he conveys is even more apt today than when he unleashed 12 years ago. It boggles my mind how readily grown adults who've never faced the media spotlight will trash 19-year-olds.

He just might have been addressing a Sanctimonious Troll, who DOES live in a hole, writing terrible things about Mike Leach.
And I think Leach conjugated it as the formal "Vous" !

Well, he did go back and write a column that basically said that there is a reason why the Cougs have lost seven straight Apple Cups, and that reason is Mike Leach.
So draw your own conclusions.

Just watched this out of curiosity. At what point did he lose it? Seriously? Some columnist who has a history of negativity towards the Cougs that apparently predates Leach gets called out and it's a big deal to you? Wow.

They do it because it's easy, because the 19 year olds can't fight back, and fundamentally because they're bullies at heart.  In other words, there is no way on god's green earth that they would ever put up with behavior like their own from anyone else.
