OT: Niners at Ravens -

Next starts now, er OT: Niners at Ravens
40 degrees and raining in Baltimore. The weather will certainly impact the game, but it's anybody's guess how. Lamarr will be fun to watch against the Niners front.

What does this have to do with Stanford in the NFL? Who's changing these posts and why?

LOL
The board admins are either just trolling us or have really lost their minds.
How many SF Giants threads have there been on this board without board admin editing? One thread about Niners at Ravens is somehow unacceptable?

Yeah, I don't see why we can't have an OT 49ers thread. Obviously not a whole bunch of them at once, but one is fine.
Not to start a mod war, but I'll change this one back.

Thanks.
Turnovers and dumb penalties so far doing the Niners in. The weather not slowing down the Ravens at all.

Coaches really need to stop using the shotgun in short yardage situations.

Would agree there.

Now that Stanford's football season is over, and it is still football season, it seems more Niners talk is warranted, so...
I was able to see the first half of the Niners at Ravens game and then saw the stats. To me, the difference was mistakes. The Ravens made basically zero and the Niners made several. And if ever there was a game of inches, this was it. Niners just missing first downs. Ravens just barely making them. One team 1/2 FGs, the other 2/2. One team 1/2 on 4th down the other 2/2. The Niners missed Dee Ford in that game as I feared they would. Given how close it was without him, a good case can be made they win it with him.
It was frustrating to see Niners defenders hit the RB when he didn't get the ball, and Jackson never hit when he handed it off on the read options. The whole reason option football isn't suppose to work in the NFL is because it beats up the QB. Nobody is hitting Jackson when he doesn't hand off. Is it because they fear they will be called for roughing the passer? He's NOT a passer when he runs forward on the read option, so he can be hit after handing off. Defenses should assign someone to hit him on every single play on read options, whether he keeps the ball or doesn't.
Another observation. The Ravens WRs are not very good. It's hard to tell from watching the game on TV what coverages are being played, but I think it was proven yesterday that should these teams play in the Super Bowl, the Niners can leave the WRs in a lot more single coverage.
But honestly, the offense was the problem. Just not being able to convert enough 3rd downs at critical moments. They simply must make a more concerted effort to get the ball to Kittle. It's totally unacceptable for him to leave a game the Niners don't win, with 2 catches for 17 yards. The Niners averaged 6.4 YPP and the Ravens had 4.6 YPP. The Niners made more big plays but they just couldn't convert enough of them. Even had the Niners won, it's pretty clear these teams are very even and on any given day one can beat the other.

You are correct that it won't be a roughing the passer call. It will be an unnecessary roughness call. If any player is not attempting to participate further in the play and you hit them, you will be flagged, period. If the QB is carrying out a fake, you can do it if you can reasonably say you thought he had the ball. If he is just standing there, you can't. If the player is running down the field in a manner that indicates he might still be part of the play (blocking or just getting in the way), you can hit him if you are trying to get to the ball carrier. You can't just blow somebody up for fun. The NFL rule contains "Note: If in doubt about a roughness call or potentially dangerous tactics, the covering official(s) should always call unnecessary roughness.".
Assigning somebody to always hit the QB is pointless. You will get nowhere with such illegal tactics. You will run up big penalty yardage for hits the refs think are unnecessary, and you will have somebody who isn't trying to stop the play that is actually being run. Not a good idea. There are plenty of legitimate chances to hit the QB who is a runner in the NFL. Eventually, he will get hurt. No matter how good and how quick the QB is, he will get teed up on some play and pay the price. Once you get hurt, you aren't as quick and get hurt again. That is why running back's generally have shorter careers than NFL QBs. Hits add up.

One issue that hasn't been discussed much is that the 49ers are optimized to be a good weather team. They have ridiculous team speed, their success is tied to sophisticated timing of the offense, their lines are slightly smaller but more agile than their opponents.
It's not a coincidence that the Niners beat the woeful Redskins (3-9) by just a 9-0 score in the middle of a historic downpour. If the Niners and the Ravens meet in Miami for Super Bowl 2020, I think the Niners win by two TDs.

Not so fast. Apparently the last time it rained during a Super Bowl, the game was in Miami. . . .

Miami averages 7 days of rain in February, so 25% chance. And total rainfall averages 2.3". So the odds of a downpour equivalent to those during the Ravens or Redskins games are minimal.

Everyone of our sound persons had their mixer go down for at least part of the game. My eyepiece was so fogged I almost blew the Disney line. A brutal day.
