Might this be the reason the 59ers are recruiting so well? -

I've alluded a few times to UC East Bay's mysterious recent recruiting success, but it's pretty stark. This year, of their four committed recruits, they've got one five-star and one four-star (according to Scout). Last year, they were ranked 15th, with two five-star recruits. 2010 they snagged another two five-star recruits. The success has been anomalous given UC East Bay's recent recruiting success--between 2002 and 2009 they had four five-star recruits, total--and without a really obvious, good reason as to why: it wasn't as if the school was doing significantly better in terms of results on the field, and it wasn't as if there was an exciting new cast of coaches to sell optimism.
Instead we've heard a story that Tosh Luopi is a demon recruiter. This may be so, but consider that Stanford's hired a guy considered to be one of the very best recruiters in the country--Brian Polian--and hasn't experienced the same bump in recruiting. It typically seems to take time, a good staff, and sustained positive momentum to raise your natural recruiting position, as we've done and as Oregon has done. These things don't seem to be true of UC East Bay, which strikes me as very suspicious.
You may be right. My 2¢ -

Another explanation, makes sense to me, is we're finally getting the facilities issues under control. Recruits can feel and see results after too many years of empty promises. Makes a great impression on them.

I'm just not following whatever dots Brooks sees, and the links he supplies aren't helping. I'm not saying that it's not happening, but Brooks certainly hasn't made a case.

I don't know, seems simple to me:
Cal promises street agent/mentor/whatever Otis Yelverton job - North Carolina group commits to Cal - Otis Yelverton, did he get a job?
A google search reveals that Yelverton is working at Contra Costa this fall as an assistant of some sort:
http://www.contracosta.edu/progsdepts/extracurricular/athle/Shared%20Documents/2011%20FOOTBALL%20SCHEDULE.pdf
Yelverton has had rumors pursuing him for a while now:
http://www.news-record.com/content/2010/02/21/article/ed_hardinaposs_column_love_him_or_loathe_him_yelverton_doesnt_care
Now, is it implausible that a high school assistant coach could step up as an assistant for a small college? Probably not. On the other hand, it does seem odd that said small college would be interested in hiring a high school coach from across the country. Are their connections between Contra Costa and Tedford or someone at Cal? The head coach, Alonzo Carter, used to coach at Berkeley High (

http://goo.gl/vscd7).
I don't doubt that Carter is a good guy (well, if reports are true:
http://goo.gl/pEzFx), and Tedford seems like a nice fellow, for a 59er. Nevertheless, it is suspicious to me under the current NCAA rules. (If those are justified is an entirely different question....)
You may be right, dunno. -

I'll leave this question to partisans who wanna dig dig & dig.Â
And if there's cancer blooming (or not) no doubt we'll read all about it in the funny papers.

I see what Brooks is hinting at...and there could be smoke lurking under the canopy.

.. on what appears to be your 1000th post, which you obviously put a lot of consideration into, no doubt better appreciated by other fellows (and fellow-ettes?) hereabouts.
Many happy returns WIM.

I saw the last half of Pony Excess on ESPN this weekend. Since all of that happened before I had any remote interest in football, it was pretty eye-opening. I mean, they named schools after Bill Clements...

I saw Pony Excess, as well as the special on the Miami players.
I surfed around looking for information on this 59er story, and it does not seem to be new. Yelverton left his previous job at a private military academy amidst a recruiting scandal there. He then landed in Contra Costa.

Sure, it sounds fishy, but it would be extremely hard to prove anything. There's no paper trail left at Cal because he wasn't hired there. Someone would have to sing for anything to be discovered. What would be the motivation?
