David Shaw is still hot NFL commodity - OutsiderFan - 12-08-2019

I don't know what is more shocking, the fact a college coach coming off a 4-8 season is considered a hot NFL head coaching candidate, or that Daniel Snyder thinks David Shaw is dumb enough to work for his toxic organization.

I suggested a few months ago on the Cardboard that Shaw could still get a head coaching job in the NFL if he wanted one and was told I was full of BS.

Shaw’s 2019 team had injuries that would crush teams with easy schedules.   Stanford had a tough schedule.  His style of managing close games is ideal for the NFL and he has many NFL connections

At some point Shaw’s desire for location stability for his children’s education will become less critical.   The only way to know if that time is this season is to ask.

The idea that some in the Stanford community are unhappy with 3 conference titles and 4 division titles in 9 seasons may boost the appeal of the NFL too.

When Shaw started as head coach he has little grade school kids and said he wanted to stay until they were older.   Fast forward 9 years and I can see why NFL owners would want to see if they are now old enough.

Lots of good colleges in the DC Area.

RE: David Shaw is still hot NFL commodity - OutsiderFan - 12-08-2019

I can see Shaw having NFL appeal, but I don't know if I've ever heard of a college coach going to the pros coming off a losing season in college.  Lincoln Riley would seem to be the college coach with the most NFL appeal if you want an offensive-minded guy, and if you want a defensive-minded coach, Matt Rhule. I honestly don't see NFL fans getting geeked at the prospect of Shaw as their team's new Head Coach and question La Canfora's notion Shaw could have box office impact considering Stanford Football attendance.

But the Redskins? AYFKM? Maybe Shaw has some affinity for Bruce Allen from Raiders days, but any HC has to have personnel control to be set up for real success, IMO. Bruce Allen isn't gonna let a Head Coach make the personnel decisions, which means Shaw - who we know is a very opinionated guy who wants things his way - would be stuck with players he doesn't pick. Maybe some coaches can accept not having personnel control, but David Shaw is not going to be one of them. And then you have the leaking and backstabbing culture in that woebegone franchise.

To answer my own question, Shaw considering the Washington Redskins is way more unrealistic than him being courted for NFL jobs coming off 4-8.

Kliff Kingsbury 11 months ago. Texas Tech had losing records in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Yes, true.  An NFL hire coming off a 4-8 record would seem to be something record setting, however, right?

RE: David Shaw is still hot NFL commodity - Farm93 - 12-08-2019

No doubt Shaw is less likely to accept Redskins offer.

That losing season is why it makes sense for the Redskins to try.   Maybe Coach Shaw has discovered fans in college have short-term memories too.

If you are going to get heaps of complaints even with a program that NEVER had a long string of success, then give the NFL a go.

A coach, a Qb and a decent OL can easily compete for NFC East titles.

I think there will be better NFL openings, but the Redskins fans have low expectations at the moment.

Mike Riley was 3-8 and 5-6 at Oregon St. before he bolted to coach the Chargers in 99-01. Of course, the old-timers remember he was fired the same day (New Years Eve) Willingham rode off to the Golden Dome. His Stanford interview, a few weeks later, wasn't exactly pristine or he would have been the coach instead of Teevens.

I will always think the main reason Shaw was selected was that the pooh-bahs would sleep easier in Dec. and Jan. knowing their coach wouldn't scamper off to greener pastures every time a presser is released about this time. Remember that infamous note, albeit for a hour, that Harbaugh resigned and accepted the head coaching job at that football powerhouse Kansas. Granted, that was more agent-speak but it certainly ruffled a feather or two. It was definitely interesting times.

From a career perspective, I think Shaw would be wise to consider it.  When he first became head coach, he touted his NFL experience, and it probably did help a lot.  The problem is that his approach seems to be getting stale and falling behind the times (just my opinion, please don't banish me to the gripe thread) and being around new blood, new ideas, new people, etc. would probably do him a world of good as a head coach.

And, after Alabama obliterates Michigan out of Frustration Unknown to Mankind, maybe there will be some surprises on the coaches carousel....

Redskins fan here.  Yes we have low expectations, but I still don't want Shaw there.  Snyder ruins everything he touches.  I didn't like it when they drafted Love too.  My wish for every Stanford player and coach is to never have to play or coach for the Redskins.  Colts too I guess.

Colts dropped the moron GM Grigson that got Luck killed a couple years ago. I like the new GM Chris Ballard. He drafted OL in the first 2 rounds the second he got there, but the damage had already been done to poor Andrew. Ballard's drafting has overall been very good too, including Bobby Okereke who is seeing a ton of time on D for a rookie.

The “gripe thread” is not where we send people for time out LOL.

I still find it highly unlikely that an NFL team would actually extend an offer to Shaw.  All of this speculation is just BS filler for folks needing to say something.  But Shaw isn't an idiot - he knows he's got the cushiest gig in all of the football world . . .well, at least until the lights are turned out.

Or, Teejers, when he starts working for you.

Not sure that NFL teams are "trending" towards hiring college HCs. The new hires seem to be coming from inside the league. All the NFL blather during Stanford's Big-Bowl era, from guys like Steve Spurrier who predicted Shaw going to the SEC a couple of years ago (yes, he actually said this, on GameDay), has died out completely. The longer he stays at Stanford and the program continues a steady decline, the less likely it is he ever has another big-time gig. But, then, he won't need one. He has tenure.

Yeah, but what do NFL owners and GMs know compared to a bunch of guys on an internet message board?

agreed.  those named in the quotes are telling.  my guess is good work from DS's agent.

Shaw supposedly just signed an extension. His agent’s work is done for a couple years.

More like for 7 years, if the rumors are correct?
