OT Niners Saints -

Saints and Brees blow right down the field for an early TD. Backup safety torched for the TD.
Then the Niners return the favor.

That's not down by contact? I guess the contact was before he got the ball, so it's unrelated contact? Like, the contact was not part of a post-catch tackle attempt.

Gotta have the ball first for it to be down by contact.
The Saints TD pass, IMHO, was clearly incomplete. No football move, except the receiver hit the ground and dropped the ball. . . .

After the saints go down the field to score a touchdown to take the lead with a minute left, the Niners answer with a field goal as time expires and win a defensive battle 48-46.

That throw by Sanders to Mostert was amazing; a 35-yd rope off the back foot under big-time pressure.

I was telling the 9er D to just let them score at the end. Glad they listened to me!

Is anyone else reminded of the Stanford-UND game a few years ago? The opponent scores a touchdown with a minute left and the good guys win by two points with a field goal at the last second...

I thought of that game as well. When Tre'Quan Smith caught that pass, I was hoping he was going to score a touchdown because I knew there was a good chance the 49ers could get into field goal range with :53 seconds and three timeouts. I remember feeling the same way when Notre Dame was approaching the end zone in 2015.
Kittle was a beast. The 49ers defense needs to lick its wounds and regroup. I hope Sherman is OK. The 49ers certainly held their own on the road against Baltimore and New Orleans. That game 12/29 is going to be, well, of immense proportions.
Edit: This thread compelled me to go onto YouTube and re-watch our final drive in that 2015 Notre Dame game. It seems so long ago at this point. I hope Stanford victories in games between two top-ten ranked opponents are not just things of the past.

2015. One of my favorite “sideline moments”. Right after Notre Dame scored I was standing in front of Hogan. He had this look of extreme confidence – he knew they were going to score. Awesome. Hogan wasn’t a rah rah type. He just had a confidence about him.

Friggin high school open houses. This one was out of Verizon's network, too. Couldn't get a signal for the last few minutes of the game. UGH! The things we do for our kids. Missed the water polo, too. That was for a Christmas tree.

Meantime the Seahawks are down 21-3 at the half against the Rams.

As someone who was at the 1981 NFC Championship game, and witnessed many a Niners game, that Saints game is probably the second biggest regular season win I can remember since the crazy 4 TD 4th Quarter comeback at Philadelphia. I think the Eagles led 28-10 after having sacked Montana like 8 times in the first half.
What made this game so amazing was its back 'n' forth nature and the Niners answering the Saints throughout the whole game. I had assumed the Niners would make a statement in that game. They did, but I couldn't have been more wrong about how because my thinking was they would shut down the Saints with their terrific defense that hadn't allowed more than 26 points in a game all year. Oops.
What a bummer that Solomon Thomas' sack was snuffed out by Sherman holding on the Saints' final drive. That might have been the game given the clock and timeout situation.
Best missed tackle Fred Warner has ever had for sure. Was so glad he missed it and let Saints score because I felt with 3 TOs the Niners had a better chance to win by lining up a late FG than stopping the Saints from scoring a TD. The Kittle catch and run is the stuff of legend.

Real time, I was also lamenting the fact that the RB who caught a swing pass (or ran a draw - can't remember now) on third and long on SF's penultimate possession failed to go down in-bounds, stopping the clock and allowing NO to preserve a timeout. That turned out to be quite fortuitous for the 49ers. And speaking of that, why in the world did New Orleans use its last timeout on the play after the run (right before the kneel down)? I would have saved that timeout; forced the 'Niners to stop the clock; and then at least have something else to give the SF kicker to think about (i.e., are they going to call a TO before I kick this?).
I don't think it ultimately would have mattered, but still, if a coach's job is to give his team every little advantage . . .
