Baseball winter meetings - Phogge - 12-10-2019

Farhan interview. Brings up Duggar again. Problem is he is overmatched at the plate. A Double A All Star. Now they have a Director of Pitching, etc. What a joke. Ron Wotus is going to be driven batschit crazy with these poseurs.

RE: Baseball winter meetings - BobK - 12-10-2019

I would think Wotus happy he has a job

Duggar's terrible.  Very good outfielder.  Very poor at the plate, would be the worst day-to-day player in the NL if you extrapolated last season's figures.  He's not even effectively fast; he has six stolen bases in eleven career attempts.  Brett Butler he ain't.

Mystery team mentioned in Cole sweepstakes.   Who's got money?  Hmmmm...

Yankees, Angels, Dodgers publicly want him.

Houston is one of the two mystery teams, I suspect.  Home of his original training.

Hope the Giants are the other mystery team.  They seem to be shedding payroll.  And CBS thinks it's the Giants.  And they don't even factor into account that Cole is married to Brandon Crawford's sister:

How about this for a starting rotation:

#1 Gerrit Cole
#2 Madison Bumgarner
#3 Johnny Cueto (resurgent)
#4 Jeff Samardzija
#5 Dereck Rodriguez (also resurgent. Or Tyler Beede. Or Andrew Suarez. Or Shaun Anderson. Somebody. Anybody).

Mark Feinsand also reports Giants are likely mystery team...but adds that multiple sources doubt they'll be serious players.

If Cole wants to pad his stats...Dodgers and Giants ballparks would surely help.

And adding Cozsrt another $9M.

Two non performers so now I fully understand why Pillar has to go.

Cozart was the throw-in.  The real prize was Will Wilson.  The Angels 4th best prospect.  1st rounder from 2019.  Perhaps Crawford replacement in a couple years.

I doubt Cozart will ever see a Giants uniform.  He's a shell of his 2017 All-Star self.  Will Wilson was the real get, a #15 overall pick in 2019 by the Angels.  Good college stats:
https://d1baseball.com/player/X8yYw1JA/will-wilson/

Apparently Giants want to be in the running for 27 - year old Castellanos:

Gausman's stats aren't gaudy.  But from what I've read, the Giants believe that they see things in his pitching motion that they can repair.  In fact, I read that is Farhan's basic idea, that he has pitching and hitting coaches that can optimize the pitching motions and swings of young players to a greater degree than the former staff.  Hope it's true, it would be nice to see.  Supposedly that's what vaulted Yastrzemski's big league numbers to his terrific rookie year at the age of 28.

RE: Baseball winter meetings - OutsiderFan - 12-11-2019

I'm going to really enjoy the gigantic plate of crow some of y'all are gonna be feasting on in a couple years as a result of doubting Farhan Zaidi.  According to McCovey Chronicles - which nobody has any reason to doubt - when Zaidi took over the Giants a year ago, they had 5 players in their system rated 45+.  They now have 10 such players.

The Cozart move to get Wilson is brilliant. The Giants have the ability to take on "bad" short-term contracts from teams wanting to immediately clear payroll and will do it for top prospects. It is super smart to do this. They got the Angels' #4 prospect for basically cash. Now, would you rather have the Angels' #4 prospect and maybe Nicholas Castellanos, or 31 year old Kevin Pillar?  I'm not saying they couldn't have all, just that this is yet another reason not tendering an offer to Pillar made sense.  If he takes $5 million, maybe they bring him back, but under no circumstances is he worth $10M.

Now apply this judgment to all aspects of the organization's baseball operation.  The Giants are building a sustainable model to acquire and develop talent they haven't really had in my entire lifetime, that combined with their cash printing machine, will make them a consistent contender.

Aren’t gaudy is a nice euphemism for “they suck”. But Gausman didn’t cost a player so we shall see. Kind of interested why Angels would give up a top prospect for cash and a player to be named later. I suspect Cozart was required in that deal - salary dump.

So Wilson movies one of two things – either an excellent move as you suggest or an indication of the angels organization believes he can’t play. Because you don’t dump top prospects in that fashion. It’s not like the Giants are taking on 90 million salary in Cozart

RE: Baseball winter meetings - Phogge - 12-11-2019

Don’t know how old you are OF but in my lifetime starting in 1958 through about 1965 the Giants has the most talented system in MLB. One big problem is that they made some dumb trades like letting Manny Mota and Jose Cardinal go away for nothing and dealing Felipe for Bob Shaw.

Haven’t tried crow but we used to shoot rattlers on my cousin’s ranch and grill them over coals. Dog in the Philippines and manatee along the Amazon were not bad. So may try crow someday. I don’t like Farhan. Once a Dodger always a Dodger.

RE: Baseball winter meetings - BobK - 12-11-2019

Mick you refer to the Giant coaches pitching and hitting. Who are they. I can’t find cure t info. Young back?? Powell listed but he’s gone. Who are these great coaches

Cozart $9M and won’t play is better than Piller who can?

Miller is going to be a star ? Potential is a French word for ain’t done nothing yet

Like Phogge a Giant fan since 1958. Actually 1952 when As a very young boy bought a comic book about the shot heard round the world Bobby Thompson’s HR to beat the Dodgers

I’m a fan so hope all works out but right now stupid moves

3-9 isnt gaudy Mick? That’s an understatement lol.

1.  Potential is actually derived from Latin words that mean "potent power ability."
2.  No, Cozart can't play, though he was an all-star two years ago.  They wanted to get the overall #15 selection in last year's draft, a player they had scouted and desired, per Farhan.  And they got him for, essentially, cash.
3.  I don't know what you're referring to with respect to 3-9 not being gaudy.  I don't think that was one of my references.
4.  I think of Pillar like Bill Walsh thought of Steve Deberg -- just good enough to get you beat.  He plays a deep center field because he can't catch balls over his head.  He has poor range and can't get on base.  Woo-hoo, he had 21 home runs, less than one per every 30 at bats.  Yeehah, what a guy.  The opponents had 238 home runs in 81 games at Oracle.  The funny thing is, we still might get him.  But for $6 million, not $10 million.  He's a wrong-side-of-30 free agent.  We already have half-a-dozen of those.
5.  Hitting coaches include the following: Donnie Ecker (33), and likely-to-be-hired Justin Viele (29).  Ecker was the Reds' assistant hitting coach last season.   Viele played at SCU, so he's automatically awesome.  He was a minor league teammate of Yastrzemski's.  Apart from that, he was the Dodgers' minor league hitting instructor.  Both are experts in analytics, biomechanics and player development.

RE: Baseball winter meetings - BobK - 12-11-2019

The the great pitching coach please? Or did they keep Young
Ecker from Los Altos HS. I posted that then Forgot

Love as a fan paying a guy not to play.

On the potential part I was quoting a famous former major league manager. Who didn’t speak Latin.

I generally agree that Farhan is smart, has a plan, and is implementing it.

My only quibble with your post is the part about the "cash printing machine."  When you're not good; and you're not good with a lot of players no one has heard of; you will suffer at the gate and all that entails (concessions, parking, etc.).  So I think there is some balancing that Farhan must keep in mind to keep butts in seats and spending at AT&T.  I mean, look already at the Ws in the spanking new (and by all reports brilliant) Chase Center.  Lots and lots of empties . . . in the lower bowl!

Still, I'd bet that in 3 years the Giants will be sustainably more competitive than we've seen the last few seasons.  Whether they will be good enough to make the playoffs and even win a WS is a crapshoot.  Farhan never did that with the Dodgers . . . who are a cash printing machine.

RE: Baseball winter meetings - OutsiderFan - 12-11-2019

This is an example of what I mean about cash printing:
https://onecardinalway.com

That is a development the St. Louis Cardinals are leveraging around their ballpark. The Giants are doing something very similar around theirs. Though obviously the goal is to pack the stadium and that won't happen with a terrible, old, boring team, the idea is to bolster the franchise revenues off the playing field by extending the brand as much as possible.  The Dallas Cowboys have done something a bit similar, with the Frisco football complex.

Turns out teams owning their stadium outright is both in the interest of local citizens who don't get stuck with paying bonds to subsidize, and the teams themselves.

With Trout entering the prime of his career (scary thought), the Angels are going for it now.   To do that,  they need to clear salary to bring on useful MLB ready talent (or try and fail to sign Cole).   Tossing in a prospect to entice another team to swallow a contract is becoming more common these days.

If Farhan sniffed out the Angels need to clear salary and leveraged that conclusion into a prospect,  that bodes well for the Giants.
