Costello in the transfer portal? - Row80Critic - 12-18-2019

Is there toxic waste in the locker room?  Something must be driving all this, no?

RE: Costello in the transfer portal? - muiron - 12-18-2019

Just heard about KJ, too. Looking forward to facts, enlightenment, unsubstantiated speculation - something! The Merc's story on Stanford and the transfer portal a few days seemed be "don't panic, but be a bit concerned." This, if true, moves it up a notch. Or two.  Do I really want our offense to stand solely on David Mills's legs? (Or Jack West's, though I'm sure he's better than his first start.)

From the Athletic on QB transfers (behind a pay wall but the below you can see without paying)

Quote:The Athletic studied the careers of the top 50 high school quarterbacks who signed with FBS programs in the recruiting classes of 2014 through 2017 because those signees have all been in college for at least three years. So far, 57 percent of those QBs have transferred from the school they initially signed with. And that percentage will likely increase during this offseason.

Also Tanner McKee.

Not too long ago I read an article about McKee that mentioned that he was fighting hard to keep from losing weight on his mission in Brazil.  If that's truly the case, and, more importantly, if he doesn't come back until the fall, I would think that the chances of him contributing significantly his first year are very slim.

RE: Costello in the transfer portal? - lex24 - 12-18-2019

There should be no surprise here. He was not going to beat out Mills. I suspect he was told Mills is number one. He is not NFL ready. Transferring is an obvious move. 3 of the 4 QB’s in the NCS are transfers. It’s happening all over. Only one QB plays. If you have graduated, are not NFL ready and are not going to start, you transfer.

No. This should have been expected. He’s not going to hang around to back up Mills, who is a significantly better QB.

Quarterbacks are different.  Plenty of places to be concerned about, but a QB looking at a spring competition and the very real chance he gets beat out by a younger guy and elects to transfer is not one of them.

Of course, now we gotta hope that Mills’ knee survives the season.  Even more of a reason to be thankful Little is back.

Unless McKee has an Einstein brain Shaw won’t play him until be memorizes the playbook. So if and when Mills hurts his knee, has a pulled calf or gets a canker sore it’s West and #17 (Plaus?). Really stupid to have had the gap QB year.

I'm prompted to offer my latest bad idea; I'd appreciate learning from everyone why it's so dumb.

It bugs me when opposing teams' offense come up to the line of scrimmage, get ready for the snap, then everyone stops and looks to the sideline for an alternative play call by a coach, based on how the defense has lined up. But it seems to me that us adopting that approach would help us get playing time for our young quarterbacks who are physically ready to play and have learned a chunk of the playbook but can't yet read the defenses and call the right alternative play on their own. No?

RE: Costello in the transfer portal? - Phogge - 12-19-2019

I liked it when you couldn’t signal in plays. Paul Brown ruined it by devising messenger guards who alternated on each play.

I bet Stanford would have even more delay of games if they employed the look to the sideline strategy.

Maybe someone can explain the Oregon model where they hold up a board with 4 cartoons.  Does Oregon only have 4 alternate plays?  How hard could it be to review the tape and figure that system out? Or is it like changing the catcher's signals when a runner is on second base?

Why wouldn’t McKee come this June ?

His mission started on July 10, so I guess he comes in time for fall practice.

Shaw's offense is needlessly difficult to learn and out of touch with modern college football.  There may have been a time when you could take the Nation's #1 QB recruit and spend 2 or 3 years teaching him your offensive scheme, but those days are long gone.  Shaw's system squanders talent and eligibility; makes injuries insurmountable; essentially precludes inbound transfers; and has produced consistently worse teams year after year.  He needs to adapt to survive.  It's what good coaches do.

Quote:Reality is, McKee, who regularly eats the traditional Brazilian fare of beans and rice, has lost 15 pounds of muscle from his frame in the year since he arrived here. His neck has shrunk a bit and his pants, which were tight on his legs when he arrived, now flap in the breeze.

You might be right about your other points, but this is Stanford admissions, not Shaw.  They admit about 50 out of 1500.  As if regular admissions were not insane enough.

Bob can tell us whether there is anything comparable for regular admissions for special consideration for athletes.  The one transfer athlete I remember is Brook Smith in WBB who transferred from Duke in 2003.  I'm sure there must have been a handful of others--but it is never going to be a reliable part of athletic recruiting.

not undergrad transfers but grad transfers I recall

Football - Brennan Scarlett
WVB - Madeline Gates

probably a few others

You need to get on top of melanoma early. A little scraping is better than the alternative. I tell my buddies that the scar on my forehead is the result of a knifefight. I now am a fan of McKee.

The common data set for 2019-2020 is available.

HS applicants - 4.34% admitted (2062 of 47498)
Transfers - 0.97% admitted  (24 of 2466)

Unless Stanford's undergrad retention rate changes dramatically, the number of admitted transfers will remain small enough that any coach thinking transfers are a fast path to success, or an important recruiting back-up plan should not even take a role at Stanford.
