Richard Sherman *hated* Harbaugh, but goes out of his way to help Stanford Football -
CardinalSagehen - 12-26-2019
Now that Andrew Luck has retired, Richard Sherman has taken sole possession of the title as my favorite NFL player. Aside from his obvious talents on the field, he has always struck me as witty, insightful, and a pillar of the community off the field.
It has long been known that Sherman hated Harbaugh's guts. But today, we received a bit more color in
this article:
https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/richard-sherman-still-has-bad-blood-ex-49ers-coach-jim-harbaugh
Despite having toiled under a coach at Stanford that he felt didn't give a damn about him as a person, Sherman still goes out of his way to support Stanford recruiting, morale and ticket sales. I'm guessing that he does more to support Stanford Football than just about any current NFL player.
For example, earlier this week, our top DB recruit posted this video that he received from Sherman.
[twitter]https://twitter.com/AydenHector2/status/1209647092920045573[/twitter]
Throughout the season, most of us also saw this long hype video pumping up the history and legacy of the Stanford program.

With the Seahawks/49ers showdown looming, it seems fitting to take a trip down memory lane with my all-time favorite post-game interview. I never once considered this embarrassing for him - just incredibly entertaining! (Erin Andrews is fantastic here, too, by the way.)

Thank you, Richard Sherman, for being an authentic dude that represents and supports Stanford Football like nobody else!

Unique. Interesting. Outspoken, but usual thought provoking. Tremendous football player. Who I suspect will be tremendously successful in whatever he chooses to do after he retires.

Richard Sherman's e-mail as part of a listserv thread about a Valentine's Day tradition and political correctness remains my favorite story about him:

His advice (which I will sanitize to "Adapt, don't complain") can be applied to many facets of life...

Another one of these pro athletes that comes across as a good guy until someone is critical or questions his performance, then he's quick to remind them just how ordinary their life is compared to his...just because he chases an inflatable ball around. Kaepernick is another one. I don't like Sherman.

I was really down on RS after the Crabtree incident, which was classless to say the least. But one mistake does not define any of us, and he clearly one of the most thoughtful, interesting, outspoken, entrepreneurial, charitable and talented players ever in the NFL. He makes the game better and more interesting on and off the field. Respect.

Here's one of the
latest. When he was in Seattle, he had done the same for a Tacoma school. Here's
his foundation. Oh, did I mention that Richard is the 49ers' nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, an award that goes to the best player on and
off the field? Yep, Richard Sherman is pretty good at life.

i think richard's great. i'm disappointed to hear the details about harbaugh. i thought richard had a right to be angry when crabtree refused to shake hands after the game. i enjoy how richard changes dialect depending on the circumstance (cf both the post-crabtree interview and the dorm email). eddie murphy is really expert at that.

Skip plays golf with my uncle, specifically because my uncle has never listened to sports talk radio. I still liked Rick better.

"Sherman said his relationship with Harbaugh was irreversibly damaged when Harbaugh expressed anger toward Sherman after he underwent season-ending knee surgery early in the 2008 season. Harbaugh told Sherman he quit on the Stanford team, Sherman recalled. Sherman said Harbaugh told him he would never play offense for Stanford again, despite being the team’s leading wide receiver as a freshman and sophomore. Sherman moved to defense and began the following offseason at the bottom of the Stanford depth chart."
Man, that says a lot to me. I appreciate what Harbaugh did for Stanford football but what a crappy thing to do. Coaches who want kids to sacrifice their health and their future for short-term gains to the coach's career are the worst. Glad Sherman chose to have the surgery and glad he has turned into a Hall of Fame cornerback. "LOB!" Love Richard Sherman!

In 30 years I doubt many people will remember Sherman, the football player. People have short memories for once revered athletes. Heck, mention guys like Bo Jackson or Barry Sanders to young people today and they're like, "Oh, yeah, I've heard of those guys". Now, once the jock comes off for the last time and Sherman goes on to have a successful career that spans into his 60s, like a Bayless, then he would have done well at life, at least professionally.
On a side note, I love Sherman's mom. Harbaugh suspended her son for a game in '07 because he threw a temper tantrum on the sideline due to not getting the ball enough. The following week Mrs. Sherman flew to Pullman to support the team vs WSU, while her son was left behind. She's also the one who talked him out of transferring after that season.
