WBB: Stanford 77 WSU 58 - 81alum - 01-02-2020

Preview:

Washington State has a relatively new coach in her second year, and by all accounts she is one of the best in the game:  Kamie Ethridge.  You can read Malcolm's preview over at the FBC that summarizes her credentials well:
https://fbc-previews.blogspot.com/

WSU comes in 7-6, but that mediocre record should not conceal the fact that they have lost to 5 ranked teams.  Only the loss to Washington on Sunday was a "bad" loss.  Massey has them ranked a somewhat respectable 79.  Their new coach inherited two fabulous players in Bobbye Buckets (Hristova) and Chanelle Molina.  Hristova (from Bulgaria) leads with 19 points a game.  She is an undersized (6') forward who has great slashing moves, good accuracy, and a strong all around game.   In the past, Tara's scouting report defense has controlled her or even shut her down.  Molina is shooting a lot of threes at a 40% clip.  There is also a 6'4" center from Serbia averaging 10 ppg, and most of the players who did not leave the team during the transition are foreign students.  Washington State has not beaten Stanford WBB in its entire history, but one day the wrong combination of factors will come together to change that.  I'm hoping that this is not the year it will happen.

Overview:

Stanford led for the entire game, by double digits after the first quarter.  Despite the convincing victory, the two WSU players that we knew were the highest offensive threats had spectacular offensive days--Hristova with 21 and Molina with 27.  When we face teams like Oregon that have 5 equivalent players, we had better play better defense.

Flow of the Game:

Not much flow to discuss.  The lead lengthened into the high teens and pretty much stayed there in the second half.  But it is worth noting that the offense in the beginning of the game played at a much higher pace than we saw against Davis, with more and speedier motion.  Whenever it flagged Tara sent in substitutes.  It seemed to me that the goal was to pick up the pace of our offense, and it succeeded.

Kiana Williams held Molina in check for a while--just 8 points in the first half--but a combination of people could not sustain the effort in the second half as Molina went off for 19.  Hristova was defended by a variety of people too, including Jones, and while she was good early in the game, she didn't make a point in the fourth quarter.

Performances:

Nadia Fingall get the game ball, and she did get the loudest ovation as she left the game, with a team leading 20 points.  .  As much as the game "broke open" I would say it happened when she shot three treys in relatively short order.  She also executed well in the paint and was effective defensively.

Kiana Williams deserves praise.  At the beginning of the game it was depressing seeing her slump continue--she missed the only shots she took and then got timid about taking more..  But then she got a basket on a breakaway and she began to cut to the basket for some layups and free throws.  She still missed her jump shots, but she finished 5/8 for a very respectable 12 points.  Hopefully this will help her "get her mojo back" in Tara's words.

Jones did what Jones does--10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists.  A glue player if there ever was one.  Unfortunately she continues to be a turnover machine with a team leading 4, again.

Jerome had a good second half.  During the first half she missed on some under-the-basket layups and I cringed.  All 10 of her points came in the 4th quarter or the very end of the 3rd, after she started making her treys and seemed to get more confidence in her shot.

Anna Wilson had one of her better games, earning 18 minutes.  She relieved Williams in defense on Molina, and she also made a trey, a couple of back door layups, and an assist in her limited minutes.  She looked strong out there--moving with confidence, decisive.

Starter Belibi and Lexie had quieter games, as did Prectel, Moshkau, and Jump--but all scored and defended.  Lacie we were told was available in a pinch, but they are giving her ankle more time to recover from an earlier sprain.

Conclusion:

Without Carrington and Dodson (who has not even been at the games in street clothes) our offense takes a step back.  Usually, when Tara knows in advance which 1 or 2 players need to be contained, they get contained--but not so tonight.  We gave up 42% shooting to WSU--one of the highest percentages given up this year.  Fortunately, we shot the three ball better than we have in recent games and with even a modicum of a long range threat our offense works.  We have a ways to go before we are ready to stop a team that has a couple of Molinas and a few Hristovas.

Ethridge is in her 2nd year.

Terrified about two things:

1) WSU's time will come at some point. Our tendency for much of the last dozen years or so has been to play up or down to our opponents, occasionally to disastrous effect.

2) Saw a dude in Costco wearing a WSU sweatshirt. Not sure I've ever seen anyone wearing any WSU garb, outside of a game.

Thanks Bob, I fixed it.  I took Malcolm's headline too literally.

Whoa, the planets are in conjunction.  I saw a dude in Costco today wearing a Stanford sweatshirt!

Is this game being shown on Pac-12 Networks?  My listing shows the Oregon vs Colorado game.

Yep, now that it's 7, it's on the menu of options to watch

Game is on Pac-12 Bay Area which may not be available in your area or with your content provider.

The Pac-12 App and the Pac-12.com website both offer very viable streaming options of the different regional channels.

Washington - Cal is the only Pac-12 game that doesn't feature at least one ranked team.

BC

22-12 after the first quarter.  Two threes by Fingall capped a 7 point run that took us from 15-10 to 22-10.

BC

Fingall now 3/3 from three point range.  Lead is up to 30-17.

Fingall looking very animated and having herself a DAY.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs WSU 7pm Friday - qwerty49 - 01-03-2020

Ouch I just watched 6 minutes and we scored 6 points. That’s a good rate for football but unfortunately this is hoops.

Hopefully that was just a bad sample. I have a feeling the rest of this season will be tough to watch. We will win our share of games — but to say we are offensively challenged is an understatement.

Good thing Wazzu is so terrible.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs WSU 7pm Friday - JJJ - 01-03-2020

41-23 at the half

Ahh, Tara says this was the game Nadia got hurt in last year. Thus the animated emotion and the desire to make every minute count.

No Lacie tonight?

Good to see Moschkau on the floor in non-garbage time. WSU clearly has watched tape - Jump is getting closely guarded at all times.

Hristova is a player...

The trouble with our offense is that we are so streaky. We can go on a 10-0 run and match up against any team in the country, but if we go into our slump where we miss a lot of shots and make turnovers, then it looks like we can't even score against a HS team sometimes

All of our turnovers in the first half were unforced, just poor decision making and miscommunication on passes.

I would also appreciate it if we didn't depend too much on the three, 36% of our shot attempts are from beyond the arc. Great if we are hot, not so great if we are cold. I would love to drop that percentage down to around 30%

With all due respect, what game are you watching? 41 points in a half is hardly offensively challenged. And honestly, this team has been the LEAST tough to watch since Chiney graduated, without question. I guess you must have forgotten our 31 point effort against Arizona State a few years back - now THAT was offensively challenged...

Well, then, whatever you do DO NOT watch the men play. In the past two games they were a combined 2 for 26 from the field over the first 9 or so minutes of the first half. This game is a scoring frenzy compared to the men.

Lacie is coming back from an ankle ding and is available only if needed.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs WSU 7pm Friday - BostonCard - 01-03-2020

41-23 at halftime.

We are shooting 50% from 3 (6/12), so not surprising that we are continuing to shoot.  Fingall finally missed, but three other players have made a three point shot.  If you want to nitpick, we are only shooting 9/21 (43%) from 2-point range.

I'm sure Tara is happy that we've only allowed 2 offensive boards.

If you want to pick nits, 7 turnovers versus 8 assists is not great.

Still, it's 41-23.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs WSU 7pm Friday - Farm93 - 01-03-2020

Stanford seems to play down to teams, or at least I hope that is what is happening today.

The team is playing like a top 15ish level team.   In a lot of conferences that would be fine, and would generate a 17-1 or 16-2 conference record.  However, in the Pac-12 if the team is "just" in the 10-15 range then they might experience 4, 5 or even more losses.

I have not watched a lot of the other Pac-12 teams, but Oregon always looks so crisp and efficient whenever I catch parts of their games.

In Tara I trust, I guess.   The Stanford players have a lot of potential but the team is running out of time to clean up their game in a way that will get them a #1 or #2 regional seed in the NCAA tournament.
