Student found dead at fraternity - PVTree - 01-19-2020

Always saddened to read this happening at Stanford:

Sad to hear when it happens at any University.

Perhaps this is nothing, but I found the wording of the statement by the Stanford spokesperson to be a little odd

"While we are working to understand the family’s wishes, we are not in a position to share the student’s name"

Was a translator not immediately available?  Or were their wishes just difficult to comprehend?

From a Google search, appears to be a local kid from Los Altos.

At first, I figured that while they likely notified the family ASAP, the family is probably still struggling to process the events and haven't yet granted Stanford permission to share more information. Sort of institutional-speak for "we're working on it and we'll share more when we can." But I, too, found the tone of the statements interesting.

The statements were reminiscent of this story late last year: https://padailypost.com/2019/06/16/stanford-student-found-dead-circumstances-not-disclosed/. (For comparison, here's the same outlet's story on the most recent tragedy: https://padailypost.com/2020/01/17/stanford-student-found-dead-cause-not-disclosed/)

Given that it was at a fraternity, I'm sure many of your minds jumped to the same conclusion mine did--that alcohol may have been involved. Thus, the absence of any mention of alcohol from the stories I've read struck me, but this could just be standard University protocol when releasing information when there is a student death.

Whatever happened, it's devastatingly sad for the entire community, and I hope everyone who needs help takes advantage of the extra help the University is providing to help students navigate the situation.

Wasn't alcohol.
Wasn't "party-related," at least in traditional sense of that phrase.
Very sad.

I actually wish the University statement was along the lines of: “It is always tragic when a young person dies.  We ask you respect the family's privacy.”

Nothing more. Absent foul play - how or why he died is none of our business. If the parents blame the Univ or someone else, well that’s different. Absent that, let the family and friends grieve in peace.

An update: https://news.stanford.edu/2020/01/20/update-campus-community-death-undergraduate-student/

RE: Student found dead at fraternity - martyup - 01-21-2020

That statement seems to rule out suicide.

Am I the only one who found the update a bit overwrought? Sure, include a statement or two from someone who knew the kid, but language like this:

[*]Inspiring yet humble, he was incredibly well read and deeply interested in history, politics and current events.
[*]I have heard that when Eitan was with you, he was fully present and focused.

And I just roll my eyes at a campus administrator trying really, really hard.

Sometimes I think Stanford really was better back in my day.

I think what you are seeing is probably because the family was part of the Stanford community.  His parents basically have to go to work with people who are reading the updates.

I thought it was a nice way to honor Eitan's life. If this had been my child, I would have appreciated the words of sympathy and care in this statement. I hope this brought some comfort to family and friends.

I read it the same way. Does the extent of the tribute vary with the connected-ness of the student? I don't recall the last undergrad on-campus death, but did that poor soul get the same treatment? As an institution, better to stick to the facts.

RE: Student found dead at fraternity - Hank 91 - 01-21-2020

It seems there was a conscious effort to make this more of a memorial than simply a statement of the facts, and I appreciated it. In fact, I'd much rather read something like this than details or conjectures about what happened. As a parent -- and I can't believe I'm typing these words -- I would appreciate a statement like this. Say what you will about the "Stanford family," but I feel that I'm part of it. I understand that on its surface this is billion-dollar organization, but I appreciated reading about this student and learning something about him, and I think it's okay that they went in this direction with this statement.

Have to agree.  I would appreciate this personal touch at what is by definition the most awful moment parents can experience.

I think this gets to the heart of it.

I would not have found any fault with the dean's words if they had been spoken at a memorial service, where the audience very clearly is those who are grieving the student's death.

RE: Student found dead at fraternity - cardcrimson - 01-21-2020

Apparently on a sports board, even a Stanford related one, there is always something to complain and argue about. Kind of disappointing, frankly.

RIP Eitan. Prayers for your family and friends.
