WBB: GOSTANFORD.COM'S Shot Chart Feature Provides Visual Analytics Tool - Baez87 - 01-26-2020

I just discovered a handy analytical tool on the GoStanford.com web site. It is called "Shot Chart" and it is an interactive device that charts our team's made and missed game shots, their launch point, and who shot them. I’m not sure if it’s new or if I’m just getting the news, but I thought I would share it just the same.
The tool is located in a section of gostanford.com called "LIVE STATS," although it’s not easy to find. And, due to the tool's complexity, it seems to take a day or two after a game before it is posted and can be accessed.
If you would like to see the Shot Chart for the Colorado game, simply follow the link below.
https://gostanford.com/sidearmstats/wbball/shot-chart

If you would like to find it on the gostanford.com web site for future games, I have provided a step by step method for iPhone and iPad users.
On an iPad: go to gostanford.com, Women's Basketball, latest headline, then scroll down past the recent game headlines (eg. "Clutch Cardinal") until you find a gray box frame containing the menu choice "LIVE STATS." If that menu choice is not available, continue to scroll down past the next game headline (eg. "Cards Crush Utes) to the next gray menu box to find "LIVE STATS." By tapping LIVE STATS, you will be taken to a page which has a menu bar in the left column. There you will find the choice "Shot Chart," choose it and you will find the analytical tool.
On an iPhone, after finding and tapping "LIVE STATS," instead of finding a menu column on the left, tap the three horizontal bars in the upper left corner of the screen to expose menu choices, select "Shot Chart."
On the Shot Chart page, you can select a variety of filters by tapping icons on the page, including:
Shot Chart or Heat Map
Home team, visitors, or analytics for both
Team or individual players by game or periods
Shot types - 2pt, 3pt, or jump shot
Results - makes or misses
Clear Filters (to start over)
(The Heat Map with the Makes and Misses Filters turned off, provides an interesting, almost ethereal, colorful snapshot of the game's offensive energy center!)

Thanks Baez!

I have found that chart before but only when the LiveStats is available during and immediately after the game--which I access from the link from the Go Stanford schedule.  But it was my impression that the LiveStats went away when the game was no longer...live.  I had to fall back on the normal box score from about an hour after the game.

I'm not clear how to access old Livestat charts from my PC after the game is over.  Your link took me to the Colorado game.  Is there just one game at a time available?  So that the Utah game will eventually replace the Colorado game?  Or can we access all the old shot charts?

Out of curiosity, how are the shots charted?  Is it done with technology, or is there a scorer who marks the locations as they go along?

I don’t have enough data at this point to answer your questions. Hopefully we have other contributors who know the ins and outs of LIVE STATS and will share their insights. Here is what I know:
At this point in time Live Stats are available for only the Colorado game. They are not posted for the Utah game, maybe they will appear in a day or two. In looking at the Live Stats for the Oregon games, I do not  see the same data configuration, nor do I see the Shot Chart. I will watch for this in the coming weeks, look for a pattern, and report on what I see.
It would be shame if Live Stats were only available for the most recent game or games. They offer a detailed picture of the game—including the Shot Chart, Individual and Team Stats. The Shot Chart is similar to a scouting report and the Team Stats are similar to a coach's post game analysis, including columns of data on player efficiency and more.
As for how the shots are charted, I can only harken back to my old dBase programming days and imagine a central algorithm which generates a result drawing from databases of player rosters, individual stats, play-by-play details of the game, makes and misses, and the like. I can’t imagine setting up that kind of ambitious analysis only to be available for a day or two. Perhaps this tool is in its infancy and will be more available as the season progresses, or perhaps teams don’t want this kind of data readily available to their opponents.
