MBB vs. Oregon State -- Another Loss :=( -

Televised on P12N. We are favored by 7.5 at home. Can the guys get the bad taste of a road defeat out of their mouths?

Amazing to me that Oregon barely best cal just now.

PAC 12 crappy.

If you cross bred a turtle and a sloth and gave it a really strong sedative, it would still likely play a much more dynamic offense than we do. Whoever nicknamed this team Team Fun clearly wasn’t paying attention.

Not a good night for Monte on the mike. Says Stanford swept Kal, claims da Silva hates to shoot threes (he only hoisted up 113 last year at 25%) and then he missed an obvious goaltending call.
Oh yea, the game: No idea if the suddenly porous Stanford defense can get a stop when it counts (as will be necessary), but the offense has been OK in the second half. Down by three at the 11 minute mark.

They were fun before conference play began as the freshmen were unknown entities. Now most teams have enough film on the freshmen to understand tendencies. And the team doesn't quite have the dynamic offense needed to then take advantage of the defensive adjustments.
Feels like Stanford needs offenses to make a lot of unforced errors, but generally teams get better at reducing those types of mistakes as the season progresses.
I sure hope the team can get this game. It will be an ugly game either way, so I want them to get an ugly win.

Over at Cal I’m pretty sure they’re bemoaning the fact they have such a weak travel partner...

Well, that was... not fun.
At this right, I wonder whether we will even get an NIT invite.

Damn Trees. Ice-cold in the first half, an unknown Beav goes off for 20+ points, then they can’t stop ET when the offense heats up in the second half. Advance to the hump multiple times and get turned back on every attempt over.
This team is going to give the Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, and Carnifex tracks in my music library a workout for the next month and a half.

Wait until Saturday to panic. Suddenly Oregon is a must win.
Casey Jakes says the lack of Stanford's bench production is the problem. Maybe that's the underlying cause of some listless play lately--tired legs.

Average coach got some almost ready for prime time freshman that took advantage of weak teams, unprepared teams, and a lot of home cooking. Now the conference coaches have enough footage to prepare for the players and are able to make superior game day adjustments to Haase.
The freshmen look tired. The physical grind of a season against more mature college players, the travel, and the academic load probably are in the mix, but their body language lacks that swag they had in November and December.
Haase just doesn't seem to have the answers and over his tenure his teams have consistently faded late in games and seasons. That's generally not the consistent with above average coaching.
I don't believe Stanford Basketball could get a better coach given that environment in Maples, so probably best to stick with Haase to see if the freshmen can rally up this season and/or have a solid 2020-2021 season.
Remains laughable that Haase was the hypothetical pick of some over Shaw just two weeks ago.
The good news is that those so quick to demand adjustments from Shaw can now direct that frustration to Haase. Haase has done so little at Stanford. He appears to be a high quality individual, but....

Terry is going to be very good. The rest of the team are compliments only. They need a muscle guy who could take on a player like Kelly and keep him out of the paint. Seven blocks. He was the difference.

That feels like the elephant in the room to me. We have 5 starters and...not much else, really. In years past we could rely on guys like Marcus Sheffield or a younger Oscar Da Silva to provide a spark off the bench. None of the next men up in our rotation (Delaire, Kisunas, White, Keefe) can really do that, as far as I can tell. Our starters are now known quantities that have plenty of film to prepare against, and when the first couple options get defended properly it seems the team just gets hesitant and doesn't know what to do.
On the bright side, the entire team comes back next year. And we've already matched last year's win total, even with the current 3-game losing streak.

Apparently, two of the incoming freshmen can really shoot it. And the post player looks like he has game. We simply need more scoring options. My guess is we'll have it next year. Alas, we'll have to wait to find out.

The "next year will be better" thing has been done before with Haase.
The players on this roster are all his guys. This is basketball, it is not that tough to learn any system. The idea that the guys on the bench can't contribute more against the talent level of Oregon State while in Maples says a lot.
Hopefully with some early wins this season recruiting will continue to improve. There always seems to be a hope with Haase that it will get better someday soon.
I hope they can recapture that swag, but the schedule over the next month appears more challenging. I do fear this team will not get to the NCAAs, again. They are close, but the Pac-12 is tight this year. I am just not sure a team without bench contributions and visibly tired starters can win enough to get into the NCAAs.

No, right now we are not an NCAA team, and probably not that close. It's time to recallibrate expectations and hope we don't completely collapse down the stretch and miss the NIT.

The league is beyond crappy. That is why I think they will beat Oregon. Too bad they don't have a guy who can knock Pritchard into the tenth row.

Haase just doesn't seem to have the answers and over his tenure his teams have consistently faded late in games and seasons. That's generally not the consistent with above average coaching.
You're making two contradictory arguments here: 1) they're tired because of lack of depth and 2) Haase is just not a good coach. I strongly agree with #1--the entire team looks tired, not just the freshman. In between plays, they seem sort of listless. They are not playing with the energy they had early in the season on offense or defense. You can make the argument that that's a coaching issue, but I see it more as a product of 5 guys playing over 28 minutes a game--Davis and Terry are over 30.
As for #2, the argument that Haase is being exposed now against better competition is silly--Oregon State and Cal are mediocre to bad teams, and USC is not great. We played some bad teams in the preseason, but we also beat Oklahoma and came within a couple of ridiculous shots by that one kid from beating Butler. It's not like we're just having problems in one area--the team seems to be doing everything worse lately. Is Haase suddenly a bad coach? Has he changed the system in some way that is suddenly making us lose? No. I think they're just tired. Next year, we hopefully add 3 new rotation players (plus maybe Fitzmorris). That will be a brobdingnagian difference.

This team has no major injuries and a roster with players that have only known Haase's system.
I am not entirely certain the team gets to 20 wins, but 20 wins should be enough for the NIT. If they don't get to 20 wins it will mean they finished the last 15 games of their season at 4-11. 19-13 overall.
I hope it doesn't happen, but if it happens expectations will not be the only thing DAPER should recalibrate.
Oregon is a very important game because the team is running out of chances for a big win. UW LOOKED like a good win, but now that they are last in the Pac-12 Stanford's best win is over 4-4 UCLA.
