RE: Baseball at Santa Clara - JJJ - 02-18-2020

Maier struck out the Broncos' side while giving up a 1 out double. Not a bad start.

Well, our bats went 6 up, 6 down with 4 Ks so we're still looking for offense. I'm going to shut up now.

RE: Baseball at Santa Clara - Mick - 02-18-2020

Sixth inning, SCU ahead 2-0. Bronco starter Travis Howard and reliever Alex Waldsmith have combined to allow just one baserunner, who was erased on a double play, therefore the pitchers have faced the minimum through six.  Three Stanford pitchers (Meier, Grech and Parasarathy) have combined to allow just two hits and three walks from SCU, albeit one was a home run.

Really good game through 5 1/2 innings. Lots of baseball left to be played.

Top of the 7th, SCU now ahead 3-0 on bases-loaded sac fly.  Stanford got out of bases-loaded, no-outs situation by giving up just one run.

Neither team has an error.  Great game so far.  Stanford's #2, #3 and #4 hitters (Molfetta, Tawa, Brueser) are up.

RE: Baseball at Santa Clara - Mick - 02-18-2020

Mid-8th inning.  Score now 3-2.  Stanford scored Huff and Bellafronto on Hinkelman's double down the right field line.

Broncos win, 3-2. Neither team mustered much offense.  Both defenses were excellent, there were no errors.  Pitching obviously strong.  SCU is 5-0, Stanford falls to 1-3.

Next game for Stanford is against UHouston at Houston this Friday on Feb. 21 at 1 p.m.

Stanford vs. SCU rematch at Sunken Diamond on Tuesday, May 5 at 6 p.m.

SCU no slouch.

Mick, your alma mater, yes? Who were you rooting for? No lose situation for you!

Santa Clara was THE Bay Area power in the Sixties except for Stanford’s run in 1967. Lost an extra inning NCAA title game with Giants bonus baby Bob Garibaldi pitching and future major leaguers on the field including Tim Cullen, Ernie Fazio and John Bocabella. A very tough lineup to face.

It is my alma mater, and I want them to do well.  I tried out for the team when I was there, did very well in the fall, then developed a sore arm.  Always liked SCU baseball.  But I've liked all of Stanford's sports teams since I was a little kid, frankly, for about ten years before I'd ever heard of Santa Clara.  Also, my cousin was Marquess' student manager, and Nick Bellafronto went to my sons' high school, so I definitely like Stanford baseball.

So I like watching both teams and want both to do well.

For whatever reason, SFBA college teams have done well with catchers.  Stanford has had 32 catchers drafted since 1965, including A. J. Hinch and Ryan Garko.  Boone was drafted as a 3B, but played the bulk of his time in MLB at catcher (just 7 games at 3B).  Cal has had 22 catchers drafted since 1965 (including Korey Lee in the first round last year).  Santa Clara had 17, including Mike MacFarlane, Bruce Bochte, Fran Mullins and John Boccabella.  San Jose State had eight.  St. Mary's had five.

1962, 15 inning loss to Michigan in the title game

I know I faced Boone's brother in '67 and Bob would have been a freshman that year. We could use frosh in our conference, can't remember if Stanford could. They did have a bushel of drafted players.

That year Santa Clara had Bob Spence, Ray Henningson and Vince Bigoni (two time consensus AA) but not a ton of pitching.
Cal had Messersmith, Nye and Frost and all made it to MLB. Pacific had two pitchers who made it to the Expos.

A great era for Bay Area College baseball and the '62 Broncos the best team of the period.

RE: Baseball at Santa Clara - BobK - 02-20-2020

That pretty much ruined Garabaldi although he was able to pitch a bit with the Giants. He then became one of the best ever MBB refs.

Mick, I'd expect you (and anyone) to root for your alma mater in a head-to-head versus Stanford.  No need to equivocate.  We all appreciate your Cardinal Fandom when it comes to all sports and against all opponents other than Santa Clara!

P.S.  Great historical baseball knowledge being dropped in this thread.

RE: Baseball at Santa Clara - Phogge - 02-20-2020

And Stanford still refuses to play the Gators. Chicken!

Oh, I do.  I want Stanford to finish a very close second in games against SCU...;).  Against all other opponents, Stanford domination is my preferred outcome...

Fooey.  I'm in Houston today and actually have some uncommitted time.  I thought I might catch the game, only to find out that the 3 games this weekend are in Round Rock (n of Austin, about 180 miles from Houston).    But, who knows, maybe I could catch Saturday or Sunday's games as I'll be in Austin area (probably not).  (Won't make the tennis match on Sat. in Austin)

Looks like a fun three games.  Houston on Friday, Texas Tech on Saturday, Tennessee on Sunday.  Best of all, you get to be in Austin, not Houston.  Wish I could make it.
