WBB: Stanford 68 Oregon State 57 - 81alum - 03-01-2020

Preview:

We get Oregon State for the 3rd time, which has got to be the most difficult first game in the Pac 12 tournament we have ever had.  The two sides know each other well, obviously.  While conventional wisdom is that it is hard to beat another good team 3 times in a season, I think their loss of Kennedy Brown probably hurt them more than our loss of Haley Jones, and Belibi has improved enough to help us.  Given that Jenna Brown is reportedly going to be ready for the Pac 12 tournament, I like our chances.

On the other hand, Oregon State last night was firing on all cylinders.  Kat Tudor was 6/7 from three point range and OSU buried WSU.  As Rueck said in a courtside interview, it has taken OSU a while to adjust since injury altered their lineup, but adjust they have, and we are going up against an improved OSU team.  We had better be improved too.

The announcers stated that Oregon State had locked up 6 and today's games would not alter that, but what is the tiebreaker between Oregon State and Arizona State, given that they each beat each other once and have the same league records?  I get why UCLA has the tiebreaker over us for the 2 seed, but don't understand how ASU and OSU get sorted between the 5 and 6 seeds.

Since they have same league record and are even against each other, they go on to the next tiebreaker. Arizona State is #5 because they have the better winning percentage over the #1 team (Oregon). They were 1-1. Oregon State was 0-2 against Oregon.

I think the upper seeds will win all games, except for the Condoms beating the Polar Bears.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Oregon State 8:30 Friday - 81alum - 03-06-2020

This is going to be a very tough game tonight.  OSU is "on."  Kat Tudor 6/7 last night from three point range.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Oregon State 8:30 Friday - PVTree - 03-06-2020

Slocum is my biggest concern. Tudor will revert closer to her season average, and she really hasn't hurt us much. Pivec is slow enough that we can contain her. Slocum is capable of making very difficult shots. I hope we are able to hold her under 20.

Our turnovers will be the key stat of the game. We have 12 or less, we win comfortably. Above 12, and it will be a close game.

I’m in Vegas and Oregon state looked awesome last night. Not that Washington State is much
Pivec is a great player
I’m very worried

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Oregon State 8:30 Friday - 2006alum - 03-06-2020

As Tara says, it's very hard to beat a team three times in one season. And OSU is motivated to be sure to lock up a first-round hosting bid.

As long as we are likely to remain a two seed regardless of the outcome, given all our bumps, bruises, injuries and illnesses, I can't say that I'm as concerned about losing this year as I have been in some years past. It would give our team some extra rest, which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. With our reduced manpower, I just don't see us taking down OSU, UCLA, and Oregon in under 48 hours, and if not, any other result is one that ends with an L. So really, all I care about is that we remain a two seed and avoid any additional injuries.

Missy Barlow is reffing cal vs Arizona. Assume that means we won't see her tonight.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Oregon State 8:30 Friday - BobK - 03-06-2020

So after the first qtr 23-18 Arizona. Now I know refs pick on us lol but be ready. Hitting is legal knocking down a player mostly legal.

Refs have found their whistles in 2nd half,  Cal vs Arizona,  but shoving is still ok if you're Cate Reese

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Oregon State 8:30 Friday - BobK - 03-06-2020

In person disagree on the Reese shoves but an amazing 13 fouls called in the first 5 minutes of the third qtr

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Oregon State 8:30 Friday - M T - 03-06-2020

I had on a replay of one of the P12 tourney games, with two of my least favorite refs.   Right away, I see a charge called (by the 3rd ref) where the blocker had a foot clearly in the circle.    Is that a good defensive play (to get a charge) because the ref made a bad call?     Not in my opinion, but the announcers called it that way (and didn't point out that the officials blew the call).

I saw a play just like you described in the OSU WSU game.  Perhaps we were looking at the same play.  That arc seems to be ignored almost as often as it is recognized.

Stands packed with Oregon fans for their win. And almost every call against them was wrong also. :)

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Oregon State 8:30 Friday - Lorcan - 03-06-2020

In games with seeding implications elsewhere, Northwestern stumbled against Michigan. North Carolina State is likely the biggest threat remaining to our chances for getting a 2 seed after advancing to the ACC Semifinals with a tight win over Georgia Tech.

Just like at MKA in Eugene. At least in Vegas an opposing team has a chance to get its share of 50/50 calls when playing the Ducks.
