WBB: Stanford 67 UCLA 51 - 81alum - 03-06-2020

Preview:

We stumbled a bit in the fourth quarter but beat Oregon State on the basis of an 18-4 start to the game.   USC played UCLA very tight but the UCLA depth wore down the depleted USC team, and so we meet UCLA in the semi finals.

UCLA beat us by 10 on our home floor about a month ago.  They did it by using their depth to maintain an aggressive close defense the entire game and they wore Kiana down.  The absence of Jenna Brown to relieve Williams may make this strategy even more appealing now.  We will need to do a better job of defending Onyenwere, who was 10/16 for 29 points.

Probably the most important keys to the game--limiting turnovers and staying even on the Offensive Boards.  UCLA wins game not by shooting well, but by shooting much more often than their opponents--something they can do since they get so many steals and O-boards.  If we are even in those two categories we really should win.  But that is a big "if".

As always, good summary intro 81Alum. Thanks.

I'm anticipating a really tough game, for either team. On the plus side for us, UCLA had to work harder in their win last night than we did. But on the minus side, our minutes were more concentrated among a few players. Kiana played 40 minutes and Lexie 39, Nadia 35. For the rest of the team that had big minutes, Dodson 24, Lacie 23, and Wilson 17, Fran around 15. No one else had more than a minute or two. Thus, as I said, we may have tired legs, and a bit more than the Bruins. For UCLA, Onyenwere was in for 35, Dean 37, Corsaro 34, Osborne 26, Miller 21, and Chou 16. The rest of the time was pretty spread around. I just wish that Brown were playing, able to spell Kiana a bit, and since she wasn't suited up last night, I assume she won't be tonight.

USC had only 7 players yet almost won. We need the Dodson of the first half last night to go inside more tonight. UCLA has no true post players healthy that is

Also need Lexie scoring. Obviously. She did have a great drive for 2 last night
Great attendance for the Oregon game last night below average for the Stanford game
I’ll bet 90% of the fans here are Oregon and Oregon State.

This is a little ominous:  we are 0-4 against the remaining teams in the Pac 12 tournament.  Hope we start correcting that tonight.

Actually, 0-3, since only played UCLA once. But still yes, it's a challenge. But we can hope.

0 and 4....lost to Oregon twice and once to Zona and once to UCLA.

Right, my brain was not in gear. I simply forget about Arizona.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UCLA 8:30 pm Saturday - 81alum - 03-07-2020

When we last played UCLA exactly one month ago on February 7, we did not have Maya Dodson, and Nadia Fingall was limited to 18 minutes.  Prechtel led our posts with 27 minutes.  She scored 10 points.  But our posts did not do a good job defending Onyenwere.

I suspect we will try Dodson on Onyenwere.  Dodson may be agile enough to keep up with her, at least better than our other posts.  If she is very successful on defense, then tonight could be a very different kind of game.

Belibi has also progressed over the last month.  She had 4 pts in 14 minutes last time.

If Dodson or Belibi can drive from the elbow, or if Prechtel can get her jumper going, it will make it easier.  We need to punish them for overplaying us close.

And who will help Williams bring up the ball?  It almost has to be Wilson, doesn't it?  She played 11 minutes in the last game.

Ros at the Arizona/Oregon halftime echoed what I had been thinking--the return of Maya Dodson could be a big difference compared with the first time we played UCLA.  I hope she brings her A game tonight.  Two halves like yesterday's first half would be nice!

Great to have Maya back, but we will miss Jenna. She played well in the UCLA game.

Barlow is a ref for the game.

Belibi just dunked. That’s a good sign.

Not exactly a pretty first quarter, down 15-13.

Ugly basketball. Trying to decide if it's worth watching or going to sleep.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UCLA 8:30 pm Saturday - 81alum - 03-07-2020

After one quarter it is UCLA 15 Stanford 13.  Both defenses are wrecking the other team's offense.  Lexie is 3/5, Lacie has 2 fouls.  Dean for UCLA is 2/2.  A little unsettling that we have not figured out how to solve this defense yet.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. UCLA 8:30 pm Saturday - martyup - 03-07-2020

I wish we could break the press over the top and get some quick points.

Not crazy about all those elbows...no whistle? Thanks, Missy.

Weird game when Cheryl Flores is the sanest one out there.

Lexie has come to life. Hope she continues.
