We're no. 6 in both, up one in the AP poll. Oregon dropped to 13th in the AP poll and 14th in the coaches' poll.

Not that I'm particularly worried about how Oregon feels (about itself or anything else) -- but it always puzzles me when a highly-ranked team loses (not at home) to another highly ranked team, and then goes down so many places. Can anyone enlighten me? Did that happen to Stanford last year when we lost to Oregon in Eugene?

Last year we were #9 in the AP poll and #13 in the Coaches' Poll at 4-0 the week we faced Oregon; the week afterwards we were #16 and #18, respectively.

Oregon was also favored to win that LSU game. Remember, LSU has their starting QB facing felony charges, and a few other players are involved too. Oregon looked bad, and the trend at the end was definitely not going the Ducks way.
In the end LSU played the game to their style and honestly beat Oregon handily. In fact, I would suspect that LSU will play, and win, 3 or 4 games in the SEC that will be closer than that Oregon game. So either 5 SEC teams are in the top 10 or Oregon is not worthy of the top 10.
It does not matter too much as it was out of conference for the Ducks. Oregon probably just lost a chance for BCS title game consideration, but everything else is possible.
Sadly, the loss dramatically reduces the chances that two Pac-12 teams will go to BCS bowls. Arizona and Arizona State each play very important OOC games for the Pac-12 this weekend that now become very important for Stanford's Jan 2012 aspirations.

I didn't favor Oregon to win that game...LSU's defensive line looked a lot like Auburn's defensive line from last year. (Oddly enough, Auburn's defensive line this year looked nothing like their defensive line from last year.) And it showed.

Anyone read Jon Wilner's week 1 poll??? He has West Virginia above Stanford. That's right. This guy is a
total retard! What kind of person who has a brain would have those mountain men ahead of us!!!!! Thank God that the AP poll doesn't count in the BCS formula.
Here is his idiotic post

Hi StanfordIndians --
Wilner always handicaps the local teams a few spots below the national media. I've almost grown to expect it.
Still, why does West Virginia, with their win over Marshall, especially offend you? You're not confusing them with our Orange Bowl opponent Va Tech are you? /Lefty

NQR, West Virginia is highly ranked so when LSU beats them he can say LSU beat another top 10 team. Thats just a normal day in the S-E-C!!
I think that this comment on Wilner's page sums up the WVU pick perfectly. I have long subscribed to the thought expressed often on this board that Wilner does this crap on purpose to draw attention to himself. It's nice for him that the strategy appears to be working. Looking through his comments there are a lot more people from across the country taking notice. He needs to be careful though as he's risking the ire of his beloved SEC by not putting Arkansas in his list.
He doesn't get a vote in the Harris poll, right? It's funny to see the broken logic he uses to explain his picks, but I really don't want him having the ability to Mack Brown us out of a BCS bowl.

Oliver Luck is at West Virginia.Â
Therefore I am okay with it.
Re: Polls are out -

Oliver Luck also hired Dana Holgorsen...most puzzling. But hey, it's a business.

Wilner's ballot varied greatly from the norm, according to Pollspeak.

He voted Stanford lower than average, but not low enough to be considered extreme, thanks largely to John Hunt and Bob Asmussen. Both the mean and the mode was 6, with the low figure of 2 (mean -4) and the high figure (mean +8).

By the way, did we have a discussion about the most overrated team in the past five years?

For more amusement, look at Pollspeak's full over/underrated list, not just the top 5. The 5th most underrated is actually a 3-way tie including... guess who?
Re: Polls are out - bulldogbigred - 09-07-2011
Leftcoast,
I am not confusing WVU with VT. But the Mountaineers are definitely not a Top-10 team, they are hardly a Top-15 team.
It just ticks me off that this "journalist" thinks he is funny and rates WVU above Stanford. It just gets under my skin when these guys think they actually know the game of football.

I think Wilner has a bit of the Dickey / Bayless philosophy (though not to the same extent as Dickey and Bayless) --
1. The goal is to draw attention to yourself.
2. You get more attention by criticizing the local team than by saying nice things about it.
3. You get more attention by being contrary than by going with the mainstream.
4. You get more attention by spouting critical or controversial opinions than by researching, digging, doing your homework, and reporting real news.

Wish I could give +2 Respect points (or more!) for that post, Terry!
