Athletics cancellation tracker - SamuelMcF - 03-12-2020

As we've seen in another thread, Stanford has cancelled all athletics for the time being.

https://gostanford.com/news/2020/3/3/stanford-athletics-coronavirus-update.aspx

I figured I'd start a thread keeping track of other collegiate programs doing the same. The first 2 make me pretty positive March Madness ain't happening.

- Duke: https://dukereport.com/duke-basketball/duke-athletics-suspends-activities-indefinitely-dis/

- Kansas (all athletic events cancelled, unsure about practices): https://www2.ljworld.com/sports/2020/mar/12/ku-says-all-home-and-away-athletic-events-canceled-indefinitely/

- The entire Ivy League: https://ivyleague.com/news/2020/3/11/general-ivy-league-to-cancel-all-athletic-events-through-the-remainder-of-the-spring.aspx

I wonder if this includes the women's basketball team participation in the NCAA tournament (assuming for now that there is a tournament)

RE: College athletics cancellation tracker - BostonCard - 03-12-2020

The tournament will probably be postponed or cancelled.

The SEC, Mountain West, and C-USA have all suspended spring sports and sports-related activities (including recruiting).

I wonder what the SEC would have done had this had the potential to impact football season.  I'm glad that they are taking this seriously instead of their rather inane #itjustmeansmore campaign.

As of less than an hour ago the NCAA indoor track meet in Albuquerque is still on with no spectators including no family

RE: College athletics cancellation tracker - BostonCard - 03-12-2020

The Stanford invitational was cancelled.

Technically high school athletics, but the Elite 11 has been cancelled.

I suppose they could postpone the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments and try to hold them in, say, mid-May (May Madness?), but given the dearth of testing-to-date in the USA it's hard to imagine the overall situation improving substantially by then.

RE: College athletics cancellation tracker - SamuelMcF - 03-12-2020

March Madness is cancelled for both men and women.

And not just March Madness! Everything. Rest of the school year. No College World Series, no tennis championships, no nothing.

Men's and women's college basketball tournaments cancelled.

So, uh, I guess that means we clinched the directors cup?

That was a welcome chuckle in these times, BC. (And we're still the reigning NCAA champions in women's tennis, women's swimming, men's gymnastics, women's water polo, and men's golf, in addition to the three titles won already this year.)

RE: College athletics cancellation tracker - Spiny_Norman - 03-12-2020

Good thing Stanford won a NC (or 3) in fall quarter to keep the consecutive year streak alive. 44 years and counting.

RE: College athletics cancellation tracker - BostonCard - 03-12-2020

The next big decision point is going to be the Olympic Games scheduled to start 24/July.  The pandemic may subside substantially between now and then, but if it is continuing to be widespread it may need to be postponed/cancelled as well.

RE: College athletics cancellation tracker - cardcrimson - 03-12-2020

The championships are canceled, what about the seasons? Will the kids still get to practice and play?

Plus, sports where UCLA and USC could have closed the gap won't have championships this year.

That said, I feel for all of the student athletes who have worked so hard in their respective sports to lose the opportunities to compete.  Perhaps there will be additional eligibility to make up for cancelled seasons?

Geaux Cardinal!

There are no games or matches. I don’t know about training. The athletes would be on campus by themselves.

RE: College athletics cancellation tracker - BostonCard - 03-12-2020

I think our own men's gymnastics team was a prohibitive favorite to win the championship.

And we had a good chance in a number of other sports (WWP, for example).

RE: College athletics cancellation tracker - 81alum - 03-12-2020

My daughter was about to run in the NCAA Div III national indoor track championships tomorrow.  The first time she has been healthy enough to make good times since she was a freshman.  This is her senior year.

The meet is cancelled.  Her University is going online Spring quarter and sending the students home.  No outdoor season.  Her track career just ended.
