If you need a break..... - JohnR34231 - 03-16-2020

.....from talking and thinking about our world crisis.

Here's Wazzu players (current and ex) discussing the Cardboard's favorite college football coach.

All agree he got results, but some didn't like how he did it.
One of them definitely agreed with the Washington coach's assessment of the fact that the offense never changed.
Too bad we never seemed to be able to figure out how to stop it.

Oh....I am up for the challenge!

As I read that article it occurred to me that it will be VERY hard for a group of players to learn a new system from a new coach given that they will likely not be together until August.

The 2020 football season, if it happens, will definitely favor teams that did not have massive staff changes at the end of the 2019 season.

This is a good point. Leach's system is as easy to learn as any there is.

Piggybacking on this for a second: In general this concept (ease of learning) led to a knock on Air Raid "system QBs" as NFL draft prospects, because they didn't have to truly "learn the ins and outs of a system." However, the times, they are a-changin'...

Obviously this group is a mixed bag, but there's no denying the NFL is more receptive to spread QBs. Patrick Mahomes is nothing short of incredible. Kyler Murray looks like he'll be a weapon under Kingsbury (especially now that the Cardinals have DeAndre Hopkins!!!). Case Keenum had some great years in the league, though his best days are probably behind him now as he signs with the Browns to back up Baker Mayfield, who himself had a great rookie season and a terrible sophomore season under the inept coaching of Freddie Kitchens. Gardner Minshew certainly blew the doors off everyone's expectations as a 6th round rookie. That said, Luke Falk was terrible in his NFL action. Jared Goff can't read a defense and the Rams are screwed because of it. Mason Rudolph was awful this year. CMac couldn't save the Panthers from Kyle Allen.

The good news re: KJ's draft stock is that he already learned a complex pro-style system replete with multiple audibles and line checks every play at Stanford. Box checked. He can handle the mental part and is a fiery, capable leader. The move to MSU and Leach, as I see it, is to hopefully add another dimension to his game (a quicker release - DESPERATELY needed) and, of course, sling the rock approximately 8,000 times this season.

Ah, the non-apology apology.

I suspect this was Mississippi State's "Welcome to Mike Leach" moment.

The entire SEC West is pretty much straight out of a reality show: Nick Saban, Gumbo O, Mike Leach, Lane Kiffin, Jimbo Fisher, and Gus "Somehow Always on the Hot Seat" Malzahn. The cast of characters is unreal. Egg Bowls between Leach and Kiffin should be hilarious.

I guess Arkansas is there too. Sorry you guys are irrelevant. Enjoy Hudson Henry while you get destroyed!

In the 8 years that Mike Leach coached at WSU, Stanford was 4-4 against him.

2012: @ Stanford 24, WSU 17 (WSU conference ppg = 20.0) Stanford DC: Derek Mason
2013: Stanford 55, @ WSU 17 (27.1) Derek Mason
2014: @ Stanford 34, WSU 17 (30.2) Lance Anderson
2015: Stanford 30, @ WSU 28 (33.8) Lance Anderson
2016: WSU 42, @ Stanford 16 (39.8) Lance Anderson
2017: @ WSU 24, Stanford 21 (28.2) Lance Anderson
2018: WSU 41, @ Stanford 38 (36.6) Lance Anderson
2019: @ WSU 49. Stanford 22 (35.8) Lance Anderson

Sure, we are 4-4 against them, but 0-4 (and it could have easily been 0-5) in recent history.
So maybe I should have added "recently" to my post (or pointed out that although we once had the formula but it seems to have been lost in the shuffle).

RE: If you need a break..... - Papa John - 04-08-2020

That's what I was getting at, JohnR34231. We had Leach figured out in the first four years--or maybe he just didn't have the right players for his system, but the wheels fell off for Stanford the last four years.

Here's the breakdown for when Chip Kelly was head coach at Oregon:
2007: Oregon 55, @ Stanford 31
2008: @ Oregon 35, Stanford 28
2009: Stanford 51, Oregon 42
2010: @ Oregon 52, Stanford 31
2011: Oregon 53, @ Stanford 30
2012: Stanford 17, @ Oregon 14

We were 2-4 versus Kelly--although in all fairness Stanford was not a winning team until 2009--but the 2012 game was a watershed moment versus Kelly that we just didn't have versus Leach. Maybe it bothers me even more since Leach's personality grates on my nerves.

RE: If you need a break..... - Section QQ - 04-08-2020

Well, Chip was the offensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008, so technically we were 2-2 against him as a head coach.  :-)

RE: If you need a break..... - Papa John - 04-08-2020

I stand corrected, QQ. All the more reason for me to be irked at out record versus Leach.
