Olympic trivia - Phogge - 03-24-2020

What Army Cavalry officer competed in an event that has been discountinued and finished fifth? No Mick peekee.

RE: Olympic trivia - BobK - 03-24-2020

No one I knew in the Cav.

Was there long ago a local commercial that started with three letters of his name? Of course I peeked

Modern pentathlon, Patton.  1912, if memory serves.  Riding, shooting, running, swimming and yelling at shell-shocked privates.

Well, I knew what the event was without having to look it up, but didn't know just who. Thanks for that.

This thread is a great idea. I'll be getting some questions contributed, starting with this one:

In what Olympic year were events held in Stockholm?

RE: Olympic trivia - BobK - 03-24-2020

1912. ?

RE: Olympic trivia - Mick - 03-24-2020

Jim Thorpe and Billy Mills were the first two Native Americans to win Olympic gold.

What Native American was an Olympic medal winner with ties to both Thorpe and Mills (outside of the fact that they were all Native Americans?).

You have part of it.

Louis Tewanima was Hopi and a teammate of Thorpe's at Carlisle, and he ran the 10,000 meters like Mills.  He won a silver medal at the 1912 games, the best finish by an American until Billy Mills won the 10k in Tokyo in 1964.  The Hopi honor him every year with a Labor Day race in his name.

What US skiing gold medal winner was a skiing stand-in  in two movies  for another gold medal winner from a different sport?  And who was the other gold medal winner?

RE: Olympic trivia - Phogge - 03-24-2020

I would say that the other winner was Sonja Henie. Guessing that the skier was Andrea Mead Lawrence But the age difference probably preclude her. Henie was a big star and made a bunch of winter movies that might have involved skiing. My father worked on a couple and among his stories was Henie’s absolute control over her skating choreography.

Sonja was once married to an owner of the NY Yankees. Who him?

RE: Olympic trivia - BobK - 03-25-2020

Topping? Yankee owner

RE: Olympic trivia - Phogge - 03-25-2020

Who were Topping's partners in the Yankees? One was a construction mogul and hotelier. He "owned" a famous 50's hotel but was actually a front for the mob. Wikipedia doesn't mention the connection.

RE: Olympic trivia - BobK - 03-25-2020

This was the 50s right. Pre Steinbrenner ?

RE: Olympic trivia - Phogge - 03-25-2020

Yep. The owners who sold the Yanks to CBS.

And the rest -- 1956. The equestrian events for the Olympics held in Melbourne were held in Stockholm because Australia has a 6 month quarantine for horses.

Yep, other winner was Henie. The skier was Gretchen Fraser, won the combined in 1948 -- 1st American ever to win skiing gold. As for Andrea -- who was a friend of mine, died of a brain tumor in 2008 or 09 -- she won the slalom and GS in 1952 in Oslo. Andrea had come in 5th in that combined that Fraser won in 48, at the time, only 15 years old.

When was the current distance for the Marathon established and why?

RE: Olympic trivia - BobK - 03-25-2020

The distance from Marathon Greece to Athens

1896

Nope. That was the original marathon race but the distance was about 24 miles. The distance used now was established at the 1908 Olympics in London, when was course was set to begin at Windsor Castle at the request of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. That made the distance to the stadium about 26 miles and the bit over that, bringing the distance to 26.2 miles, resulted from a lap around in the stadium so that the race could end in front of the royal box.

What track and field event that concluded late at night came down to a contest between two roommates from UCLA? When? Where? Who?
