Murray was one of the fathers of modern pulmonary medicine, and literally wrote the textbook:

By the time I started at UCSF, he was already retired and spending most of his time in France, where he died.  Nonetheless, he would still come to periodic division functions, so he counts as the first person I knew personally to have died of coronavirus.  He died of complications of Covid-19 two days ago, age 93.
