WBB: Xavier Player Still Can't Get Over It - crackpot - 03-30-2020

Sad tale of Dee Dee Jernigan. Wouldn't want my kid coached by McGuff...

Still one of the best nights of my life.

I remember watching it from vacation in FL. Still an amazing feat for Pohlen but this definitely provides a sad perspective. Glad to hear she finally dealt with issues far larger even than that moment.

RE: WBB: Xavier Player Still Can't Get Over It - 2006alum - 03-30-2020

An absolutely devastating read. Not only reminds you that these player are humans, but ones often going through things we as fans have never even come close to having to confront. It's also a sobering reminder that for every thrilling buzzer-beating victor, there's a crushed loser who has to turn around and pick up the pieces.

Buried in that story was an interesting gem that made me proud of my alma mater:

Quote:When the Musketeers arrived back on campus, Jernigan said she had an inbox full of hate mail. They told her how terrible she was and said that she'd blown any chance of playing in the WNBA.

But there was some good sprinkled in. Jernigan remembers an encouraging letter from a woman who worked for the Washington Mystics. She received similar messages from people who worked at Stanford, as well as Cardinal fans.

Glad to see our coaches and fans were gracious and thoughtful even in the thrill of a memorable victory.

sad to learn how her teammates abandoned her in the locker room and presumably afterward. Contrast with our football team's reaction when Jordan Williamson missed the game-winning kick (and others) at the Fiesta Bowl: article

The anger on the bootleg about Williamson and his family was terrible.

RE: WBB: Xavier Player Still Can't Get Over It - jonnyss - 03-30-2020

thanks for posting. i agree with all.

in addition, she didn't actually lose the game. if all else stays the same, she makes the shot, jeanette pohlen ties the game, and they go into overtime.

well, fans is short for fanatics. They can be terrible. And the worst are those that post on internet fan forums!  ;)

The morning after the Fiesta Bowl, I was in the airport waiting to go home when I saw Jordan Williamson. He was sitting there looking dejected and waiting for his flight. While Williamson was waiting, David DeCastro walked up to him. DeCastro put his arm around Williamson's shoulders, leaned in, and talked to him quietly and earnestly for a minute. To me, it looked like DeCastro was reassuring Williamson and trying to cheer him up. A nice moment between teammates.

Th disappointment with Shaw, otoh, was pretty much on the mark.

impressive thread drift.

In the last few weeks on this board, we have talked about Brewer's courage coming out of depression, of Ionescu throwing up before playing us, and Jernigan's life being derailed by missing a couple of baskets.  Is there any doubt that somehow, psychologically, we make the stakes for sports way too high?

We do.  I learned a good lesson when WVB won their first championship in my time as a season ticket holder.  I always thought, wow, if one of my teams, WBB or WVB, would ever win it all, I'd be so thrilled I wouldn't mind much what happened in sports for a while, good or bad, like a cloud 9 kinda thing.  But of course it doesn't work that, way, the thrill wears off quickly and it is all about what's next.  Winning it all did not make that much difference to me as a fan, considering the season as a whole.  It was more like a wonderful extra.  Oddly this realization has made it both easier for me to get over bad losses but also maybe a bit less fanatic as a fan.  The knowledge that it really doesn't matter is more to the fore, so I stress less but I'm also a bit more detached, if that makes any sense.  Been there, done that, it was cool, but even for a big fan, not that major, win or lose the thing that counts is always the next game.  Duh, right?

One thing the cancellation of all sporting events has done is to make me appreciate and be thankful for the championships we get.  Yes, we have extenuating circumstances, but I am happy for the fall sports championships.  I was looking forward to watching some spring sports clinch championships (like men's gymnastics, who had to be a prohibitive favorite, or women's water polo, who was ranked in the top 2 or 3).  And just like that, the season disappeared.  So, gotta treasure the wins in women's volleyball, women's soccer, and men's water polo.

One cool thing, we will enter next season as defending champion in men's golf, gymnastics, and water polo, and women's soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and water polo, 8 sports!

five WVB championships since I became a fan. I don’t recall much about 2001 except Fremont HS Grad John Dunning’s first year.
I was at the 2004 win plus at the final 4 about 2010 or so.

I will savor them forever.

1999 a T&F championship.

Two WBB championships both in tv for me although at two Final Fours

Madsen with the dunk and he was fouled

Two baseball championships with the brobdingnagian HR by Paul Carey

I’ve seen other Stanford titles in person

And then there is the Giants and 49ers

Sports have been very good to me

Well, if someone is going to lob a slow pitch softball right over the middle of the plate . . .

As a general rule, and in a roundabout way to bring back to thread, criticizing well/overpaid adults about their sports job is acceptable; criticizing kids who are not getting paid for playing a sport and representing their schools is not, assuming they are trying their best (which is almost always the case).

Couldn't agree more. My general rule is to limit criticism to being mild and polite unless I think I could have done a better job myself. In the case of almost all fans of almost all top D1 athletes, the answer is generally: they couldn't. And notice how rarely the top pros who could criticize each other for blown plays - they all know how hard it is to execute perfectly all the time.

The idea of sending hate mail about the outcome of a game to a 20 year old is astounding to me.

On this I agree with you.  But also, it doesn't have to be an either/or situation, especially almost 9 years after the fact.

Well, the post I responded to was also "almost 9 years after the fact."  (I don't raise that topic or game . . . but I will comment on it if others do).

I have to admit that I was one of those creeps in 1982, sophomore at SCU.  All the students razzed a single player unmercifully when SCU played USF in basketball. That player was Quintin Dailey, so I'm going to beg forgiveness on that one. USF were our real rivals, and it was fun when Quintin Dailey came to town, immediately after molesting a nursing student.  No, we didn't hold back.  SCU win in overtime, 77-75.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quintin_Dailey

Carroll Williams was our coach and frankly, a marginal one.  He took over from Dick Garibaldi who finished first in the conference three times. Williams, in 22 seasons, never finished first once.  Not one time.  Had a decent record against Stanford, went 5-6 with a close 62-60 win at Stanford toward the end of DiBiaso's career. And his assistant, Dick Davey, later did some decent work at Stanford.

That was an interesting season for SCU.  Michael Jordan was a frosh at North Carolina, scored 21, SCU lost to North Carolina.

Five years later, I was recently married, lived three blocks from Stanford and watched Todd Lichti every chance I could get. I'd say I was a fan ever since, but my first Stanford game included Rich Kelley. I was just nine and I couldn't believe how tall he was when he walked by me.
