An email to Stanford Football STMs who had already renewed - Snorlax94 - 04-13-2020

Although it seems unlikely that football with fans in the stadium can resume this fall on schedule, it makes sense to take more time before they decide what they do.

I hope everyone can keep their seats, and even if they re-open in some capacity, I hope they accommodate the older fans. It seems like the median age is somewhere in the 60s.

Thank you for renewing your 2020 Stanford Football Season Ticket Membership. As the impact of the coronavirus pandemic continues to evolve, Stanford Athletics is closely monitoring the changing circumstances and will comply with the recommendations of the University, the Pac-12, the NCAA, and county and state officials. We continue to prepare for competition to resume in the fall. In the event the season cannot continue as planned, we will be in contact with various options to resolve your Membership renewal expenditure, including the option to request a refund.

Stanford Athletics maintains its commitment to supporting its 36 varsity programs and 900+ student-athletes, and your dedication as a STM is essential to our ability to invest in student-athletes. We remain hopeful and excited to see Stanford fans on The Farm this fall!

I would guess most of the members on this board got that message.  The Stanford AD, like every other NCAA AD, will have big budget challenges in 2020-2021.   If sports move forward they will have a big hit on ticket revenue, and if sports are cancelled they will have most of their expenses and almost no revenue.

That said, there is really no way the NCAA will have athletics in 2020-2021 in the pre-vaccine era.  This message was just a baby step to get everyone to the inevitable conclusion of this path.

Pro sports can force their athletes to honor contracts to some degree.   Pro sports can play in empty arenas and force athletes to all live in isolation from family and friends between games.   In pro team sports should a player or two get COVID-19 it would be relatively easy to add more players to the team while forcing the positive players into even greater isolation for multiple weeks.

College sports can't do most of those things, and that's why I doubt 2020-2021 will happen.  The schools can't really require athletes to play, especially the students without athletic scholarships.   The student-athletes need to attend classes and live around other students risking an outbreak to a very large community should one or two athletes test positive.   And all of the students, faculty and staff in the greater campus community also create a massive community spread risk for the athletes and their opponents.  Schools can't just add a few more players mid-season, so it would seem so likely forfeits would cascade through lots of schools and sports.

It would be a mess where the winners in most sports would be the teams lucky enough to avoid positive tests during the season.  And given that reality, who exactly would be testing the students?   The economic incentives to hide positive tests would be massive.

Then there is the academic aspect.  Those athletes testing positive will be unable to attend classes and labs while in quarantine.   That's a bad look for the colleges and universities.  They would have forced the kids to play and then forced them to miss school after they get exposed.

COVID-19 deaths would linger as a concern too.  Though that risk should be low for the college aged athletes, it is not at all certain less physically fit coaches in their 50s and 60s would do as well fighting the virus.

If regular students are allowed back on campus, I don't view it as a particular stretch to have kids play with no/limited attendance, even though there is certainly increased risk.

If players get sick, then they will stay home and recover (and take courses on-line, as is going on now . . . right?).  And fortunately, the young tend to bounce back (are show few/lo symptoms) more quickly than old folks.

As for the winners being the fortunate, healthy teams?   True.  But it's not THAT different from injury luck, though presumably an outbreak would debilitate more than a rash of injuries (but see point about youth dealing with virus better than old folks).

There may or may not be college football in 2020 in CA.  It would surprise me if there is a shutdown in SEC or Big 10.

But we'll see . . .

Is there any truth to the rumor that next season’s marketing slogan is:

NEXT has been Postponed to 2021!
