People have talked about the lack of testing there (hoping it would go away in advance of the Olympics). Abe Shinzo’s government seems to have only just imposed shelter in place (which is fraught in Japan for historic reasons).

Just tragic. A lot of it sounds like the trials and tribulations we encountered a few weeks ago (and still encounter in areas) and that europe encountered last month.
History keeps repeating itself.

It was obvious to all but those who are actually there, who had parties under cherry blossoms, went out to pubs at night (hear about the legislator who was caught going to a "sexy cabaret" after the state of emergency was declared?), and generally acted like it couldn't possibly happen to them. Sad. We have elderly family there so doubly concerned.
