https://healthalerts.stanford.edu/2020/04/28/a-message-from-president-marc-tessier-lavigne-our-next-steps/

first steps will be a gradual of research activities / restart will happen in phases

outlines issues in resuming in-person instruction in the fall / not as specific as the recent message from the Brown president

considering many options between fully in-person and fully on-line / hopes to make decision in June

talks about budget planning for fiscal year beginning in September / department are asked to develop a plan using 15% reduction in endowment funding and 10% reduction in general funds

hopes actual cuts will not have to be that severe overall

It seems wise to hold the final decision until June.  We should have a partial reopening in the Bay Area by then and there will be more information about a potential path forward if a second wave can be kept to low enough levels to be within the limits of the hospital system.  I think those numbers will be significantly different from the capacity numbers now because the number of even serious surgeries that were deferred for the possible size of the first wave was pretty extreme.  I think the hospitals will have a lot more regular patients as we try to move forward and there will be much less leeway for a big second wave.  I remain hopeful because I don't want to be depressed about it right now.  I hope rational reopening will allow us to find a path that works for most people to get a little closer to normal.  Even with a good path, I don't expect to have the joy of hanging out at my Stanford tailgate in the Fall.  Maybe in the Winter?

Cheers,
Pete F.
