Commits to other Stanford sports - BobK - 04-30-2020

I hope others can add here for the variuos stanford sports other than MB, WVB and Football which are well covered here.

Baseball
2020 Commits, 11 Since neither Mark nor David are or were inclined to release incoming athletes I don't know for sure all accepted. Since the number 11 is from the other day maybe all accepted.

2021 Commits: 9

2022 Commits: 7

2023 Commits: 1

How many Srs might return, I'm guessing one at the most. We didn't have many and only one had contributed
However three this past season were in Grad school and maybe they all come back.

Softball:

2020: 5 players coming in all accepted

Srs returning for the 2021 season: 3, all top multi year starters.

2021 Commit: one and she's been committed since she was a Frosh.

A note Next season we will have just 4 Srs. Before the CV19 just one Sr

Women's Tennis:

2020 signees (2): #2 recruit India Houghton and Ana Geller (Axel's sister) (Ana is Argentine, so as an international student, she's not in the Tennis Recruiting rankings, but she's currently ranked 46 in the ITF junior rankings with a career high of 30, while Houghton's career high ITF ranking is 73; both should contribute early)

2021 commits (1 so far): #1 recruit Alexandra Yepifanova (Russian-born but naturalized here, lived in Massachusetts for a while, high school at IMG in Florida; career high ITF junior ranking of 14; she's tall and hits hard).

For reference, Michaela Gordon's career high ITF junior ranking was 21. Arbuthnott's was 30. It's a function of the type of tournaments you play, however, so your ranking won't be terribly high if you mostly play domestic tournaments. Angelica Blake, for example, played domestic tournaments and doesn't appear to have an ITF juniors ranking, so it's not a perfect comparison.

Men's golf has 3 top players expected to enroll this fall:
Karl Vilips either the #1 or #2 rated junior in the country (depending on which ranking you use) and #16 ranked amateur in the world
Michael Thorbjornsen, US Junior Champion in 2018 and #36 ranked amateur in the world
Jake Beber-Frankel, #24 (Golfweek) or #33 (Rolex) ranked junior

This is arguably the best class Stanford has ever recruited based on junior golf credentials.

Stanford recruited a strong men's volleyball class:

Kupono Browne, a 6'5" OH from Iolani HS in Hawaii.  Aidan Peters, a "tweener" 6'3" OH/L from Loyola HS in LA.  Luke Turner is their signature pick, 6'6" OH, also from Loyola, volleyballmag.com 2nd team All America.  You might remember his dad, Ryan Turner, who played football at Stanford from 1992 to 1995.

Well, there was that class with Tiger and it doesn't matter who else was in that class.

Great players make the players around them better.  Tiger made the players temporally around him better.

Men’s Swimming for 2020 #8,14, 15, and 18

Women’s Swimming #1, 6, 15, 18

Re men's swimming, don't forget Andrei Minakov, arguably the #1 recruit among some very excellent swimmers.

Although with everything, I have to think things are very up in the air regarding his coming to Stanford.

I like our continuing Australian connection. And the black belt in karate--that could be useful when we play UNC.
The twins could be an advantage: if one starts and gets a yellow card in the first half, they could swap jerseys at halftime and no one would be the wiser. :)

RE: Commits to other Stanford sports - BobK - 05-05-2020

Doing a bit of research the Paulson Twins seems to be the granddaughters of Eric Paulson the greatest Basketball player in the history of Sunnyvale

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.  It's great to be looking past the current conditions to a time when we can enjoy excellent Stanford athletics again.

Geaux Cardinal!
