Top 10 QB performances of the David Shaw era -
Spiny_Norman - 05-05-2020
Stanford football will be publishing later this week the top 10 QB performances of the David Shaw era.
My $0.02.
1 and 2 - Andrew Luck vs. USC 2011 and Andrew Luck, Fiesta Bowl 2012 (not sure which should be #1)
3 - 10 a collection of Kevin Hogan games
Maybe make room for a KJ Costello game, like UCLA in 2018 or Notre Dame in 2017. Or even WSU in 2018 which is probably the 2nd best performance by a Stanford QB in a losing effort behind Luck in the Fiesta Bowl.

Didn't Andrew Luck once say that his best game was a victory over UW when we ran the ball for a zillion yards, give or take? Or maybe I'm misremembering.

You are right... 2010 season. 41 - 0 steamrolling of the Huskies in Seattle. It was a Luck masterpiece.
I would also throw in a Josh Nunes win vs Arizona in 2012. Come from behind OT win in a shootout. 2 clutch drives in the 4 Q to take it to OT
Just to recognize the guy's shining moment before he cleared the path for Hogan

The 2010 UW game was Harbaugh Era, not Shaw Era.
And yes, Josh Nunes vs. Arizona should be Top 10. Good reminder. I was at that game and it was a highlight in a season of unexpected highlights. I would put that over any game of Chryst, Costello or Mills (so far).

I don't know it was a particularly impressive performance overall, but there was that one time when Ryan Burns defeated Josh Rosen on a last minute touchdown to JJ Arcega-Whiteside:

Yeah, Burns played pretty well in the early part of the 2016 season, with that last drive against the Bruins being the pinnacle of his efforts.
However, it was from the penthouse to the outhouse the next week against Washington, and he never really seemed to recover from it.
RE: Top 10 QB performances of the David Shaw era -

Actually, I was thinking of the UW game in 2011, when Stanford won 65-21 and rushed for 446 yards.
In any case, if we go by adjusted QB rating--and the QB played the majority of the game--since 2011, here's the list:
Hogan, Oregon 2013 (99.1)
Hogan, USC #1 2015 (99.0)
Costello, Oregon 2018 (98.5)
Hogan, ASU #2 2013 (97.8)
Hogan, Cal 2013 (97.8)
Hogan, Colorado 2015 (97.6)
Hogan, Notre Dame 2015 (97.5)
Hogan, ASU #1 2013 (97.1)
Hogan, UCLA 2015 (96.9)
Chryst, Oregon 2017 (96.9)
Luck, Burns, Mills, West, etc. don't make the top 10.

Burns was 11-for-11 to start the game against K State, and at the time I remember thinking "good lord, one great QB to the next!"
He wasn't great overall against UCLA but I chalked that up to his first road start, plus the last drive was excellent and I thought the sign of a winning QB.
I really do think UW broke him.

Good work, Papa John. Thank you. Confirms quantitatively what I had suspected.
Box score for Hogan at UCLA in 2014 shows a rating of 99.1 also. Should that have been on the list too?
I would also give Top 10 Shaw Era consideration to Hogan's performance at Pullman in 2015. The passing numbers were abysmal (10 of 19 for 86 yards). But Hogan rushed for over 100 yards and led Stanford to a win that saved the season.
RE: Top 10 QB performances of the David Shaw era -

Yeah, he was really good to start about KSU, but it was really downhill from there. Even the last drive against UCLA, you can see he threw a real duck to a guy who happened to be wide open to set up that touchdown. Even the touchdown was largely JJAW's effort.

RE: Top 10 QB performances of the David Shaw era -

Good eye, Spiny Norman! So the new top-10 Stanford QB performances (by QBR, majority of game played) in the Shaw era:
Hogan, UCLA 2014 (99.1)
Hogan, Oregon 2013 (99.1)
Hogan, USC #1 2015 (99.0)
Costello, Oregon 2018 (98.5)
Hogan, ASU #2 2013 (97.8)
Hogan, Cal 2013 (97.8)
Hogan, Colorado 2015 (97.6)
Hogan, Notre Dame 2015 (97.5)
Hogan, ASU #1 2013 (97.1)
Hogan, UCLA 2015 (96.9)
I think it was after the 2016 Rose Bowl win--Kevin Hogan's final game as a Cardinal--that Shaw said something about Hogan being on the Mount Rushmore of Stanford QBs, along with Plunkett, Elway and Luck. As Spiny Norman points out, adjusted QBR is not the final word on how well, or not, a QB played in a game. But consider these season rankings for Stanford QBs versus the rest of the FBS/conference since 2011:
2019 Mills 16th nationally (4th in Pac-12)
2018 Costello 6th (1st in Pac-12)
2017 no QBs played enough to qualify
2016 no QBs played enough to qualify
2015 Hogan 3rd (1st in Pac-12)
2014 Hogan 34th (5th in Pac-12)--remember this is the year that KH's dad died
2013 Hogan 15th (3rd in Pac-12)
2012 Nunes not in the top 50,(7th in Pac-12)--Hogan did not play enough to qualify
2011 Luck 3rd (1st in Pac-12)
I had really high hopes for Costello in 2019, but...I'd rather not talk about it.

Another interesting performance in a losing effort is Mills vs WSU in 2019.
33-50 for 504 yards and 3 TDs. That's the Stanford all-time record in yds/gm by over 50 yds.
Of course there were some downsides, notably 2 INTs.
It's also a case in point as to why raw yds/gm isn't such a great stat.
I'm not sure whether it really qualifies as top 10, but its more interesting than just going through Hogan's career.
--------------
Another interesting bit is the non-Luck games in the top 10 in ESPN's QBR.
Looking at 2010, Luck had three games better than any on the Shaw-era list:
vs Wake Forrest, W 68-24, QBR 99.4
vs Washington, W 41-0, QBR 99.4
vs cal, W 48-14, QBR a cool 100.0
For the 2010 season ESPN gives Luck a QBR of 93.8 vs 90.0 for Cam Newton (Voldemort winner), 83.8 for Luck in 2011, 87.3 for Hogan in 2015.
It's not so clear to me that Luck in 2010 was that much better than Luck in 2011, though he did mostly stop running in 2011.

Was there a discussion of the official sites article on the
top 10 wins of the Shaw era?
Here is their list:
10. 26-20 over Oregon in 2013
9. 27-24 over UCLA in Pac 12 Championship 2012
8. 38-31 over Oregon (OT) in 2018
7. 21-14 over $C in 2012
6. 38-36 over und in 2015
5. 17-14 over Oregon (OT) in 2012
4. 41-22 over $C in Pac 12 Championship 2015
3. 56-48 over $C (3 OT) in 2011
2. 20-14 over Wisconsin in Rose Bowl 2013 (2012 season)
1. 45-16 over Iowa in Rose Bowl 2016 (2015 season)
There are three games listed here that are also on the top QBR list given by Papa John.
Hogan vs. Oregon 2013, Costello vs Oregon 2018, and Hogan vs und in 2015.
[Hogan vs Oregon 2013 is a little iffy to be on a top QBR list - his passing was limited and mediocre but presumably made the list because he ran for 57 yds - including a critical third down conversion fairly deep in our own end.]
That's not as strong an overlap with top QB performances as I might imagine.
A couple of the games were notably not-great QB performances, mostly the set of 2012 games.

It would be difficult to conceive of it having much less.

The official site has now posted their list.
LINK
They cheat because they made a tie for #10 in order to include 11 games.
They also messed up that tie because they list "K.J. Costello vs. No. 9 Notre Dame - November 7, 2013"
I think they meant Costello vs und on November 25, 2017
.
They do list the Mills 504 yards.
They also list 3 Costello games along with only 3 Hogan games.
Among those I wouldn't have included:
#6 Luck vs und 2011
#5 Costello at UCLA 2018
and maybe not
#10 (tie) Costello vs und 2017 (if that is the right game)
#7 Hogan vs Iowa 2016 Rose Bowl.
(It was a great game for sure, but not in particular a QB game.)
